Porter healthy and ready to be No. 1 receiver for Raiders
JANIE McCAULEY, AP Sports Writer
Tuesday, September 7, 2004
(09-07) 14:23 PDT ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP)
When Jerry Porter joined the Oakland Raiders, the team had Tim Brown and Andre Rison. Later, Jerry Rice came aboard.
Porter patiently waited for his chance, a difficult task for a confident and sometimes brash receiver well aware of his big potential.
Still, he decided to learn all he could from the greats in front of him, knowing that many never get the chance to play alongside one, not to mention two, of the best ever at their position.
"Did I have a choice?" said Porter, Oakland's second-round draft pick in 2000 out of West Virginia. "You control what you can control. When I came in, I think Tim Brown was in his 14th year, Andre Rison was like in his 13th, and the next year they bring in Jerry Rice, and he was like in his 16th year. It was always said, 'They can't play forever.' Now's my time."
Porter is the Raiders' new No. 1 option at wideout.
The opportunity actually came sooner than the 26-year-old Porter expected. The Raiders released Brown, the franchise's longest-tenured member, during training camp when he wouldn't accept a drastically reduced role.
Brown quickly landed with former Raiders coach Jon Gruden and ex-Oakland general manager Bruce Allen in Tampa Bay, and Porter embraced his upgraded role.
"Tim was still here, Jerry was still here. I didn't expect to be starting this year," Porter said. "I really didn't think they could do it. Tim Brown is Mr. Raider. He's a lifer."
Porter still talks to Brown a couple days a week, either by cell phone or via text message.
This preseason, Porter caught seven passes for 100 yards, totals that ranked him third behind Doug Gabriel and Alvis Whitted. But the numbers are misleading because the first-team offense plays fewer snaps during the exhibition schedule.
Porter is 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, and possesses the kind of athleticism that makes him a viable deep-threat option -- just the kind of receiver owner Al Davis loves.
In college, Porter was a free safety, filled in as an emergency quarterback, and played flanker. He even returned kicks. He also was a sprinter for the West Virginia track team.
"Jerry Porter is a talented guy, a guy that has played," Brown said. "The only question about him in my mind is can he play every down? He hasn't played the whole game as a starter before, so can he play the amount of plays that he's going to have to play?
"Physically and talentwise, he's obviously as good as they come. He can be one of the best in the league if he dedicates himself to the game and does the things that he's capable of doing."
Porter is finally healthy, which could be a major factor in his durability.
His painful stomach limited his every move last season. It was worse than most people knew, in part because he forced himself to play through it whenever possible.
He underwent what the team called multiple hernia surgery last Sept. 12, and he believes he was rushed back -- partly by his own doing.
"I put the blame on 50-50 me and the organization," he said.
Porter played at about 50 percent all season, aggravating the problem and needing another procedure in January, essentially to repair the wall of his lower abdomen area. It turned out not to be a hernia.
Porter appeared in nine games with one start, finishing with 28 catches for 361 yards and one touchdown.
"I think people knew that I was hurt," Porter said. "They just didn't know the severity of it. I didn't know the severity of it, but I knew it was more than what was being let on. I never felt 100 percent at any point in time in the preseason. It was tough. It was tough to get out there and know that a healthy me could dominate the guy across from me, but I'm playing in a shell of myself."
The Raiders are eager to see what he can do now as their top receiver. Porter will have quite the supporting cast, too. Oakland kept seven receivers and four tight ends on its 53-man roster, including the 41-year-old Rice and talented rookie receivers Carlos Francis and Johnnie Morant.
That hasn't affected Porter's lofty goals.
"I want 2,000 yards," he said with a smile. "I set my goals really high. If I don't hit them at least I aim pretty high."

Raiders looking to fix mistakes against Parcells' new-look club Saturday, August 21, 2004
By MIKE ALDAX Register Sports Writer
Many of the Oakland Raiders' more apparent problems from last week's 33-30 exhibition win over San Francisco can be remedied with a broom, it seems.
After all, penalties and silly mistakes are the kind of muck that shouldn't be hard to sweep clean.
That's why head coach Norv Turner is taking tonight's exhibition matchup with Dallas as an opportunity for the Raiders to fix what should be fixable.
"Between Week 1 and Week 2 you have a chance to clean up a lot of things," Turner said. "And obviously we have issues to clean up. We have to eliminate the penalties, we have to tackle better. And again offensively to me, taking care of ourselves is more important."
The Raiders used
four field goals from Sebastian Janikowski to beat the Niners last Saturday, including a 40-yarder to win the game as time expired.
But the stellar kicking performance didn't do much to mask the blatant miscues that marred their first outing.
In fact, the mistakes were alarmingly reminiscent of Oakland's 4-12 campaign last year.
The Raiders were tagged with a mind-boggling 21 penalties for 246 yards in San Francisco. Oakland was called for pass interference five times.
Of course, Oakland is facing a Cowboys crew that wasn't much prettier in its 18-0 loss to Houston. Dallas couldn't rediscover the same defense that was tops in the NFL last year.
Houston scored on its first three possessions against the Cowboys' starters. The Texans' David Carr calmly connected on 7-of-8 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown in leading Houston to the win.
"I've heard the comments (the Cowboys) have made. They want
to come out and play better so they're going to be ready to go," Turner said.
Turner said facing the Cowboys is going to be a good learning experience for his team.
"I'm glad we're playing Dallas because they present some problems," Turner said. "They were one of the better defenses last year, so obviously it will be a challenge for our offensive group."
The Raiders actually found success on offense last week. Oakland picked up 348 yards passing and 103 rushing against the Niners.
The success on offense was highlighted by quarterbacks Rich Gannon (9-for-15 for 69 yards) and his current backup, Kerry Collins (5-of-8 for 88 yards). The two will again bring the Raiders' quarterback situation to the forefront tonight in Oakland.
Although Gannon looked on top of his game Saturday, Collins directed an eight-play, 80-yard scoring drive in the second quarter that took just over three minutes.
The Raiders
also looked strong in their running game. Tyrone Wheatley led the way with 33 yards on five carries.
Still, Turner said there is room for improvement on offense. The Raiders didn't reach the end zone twice within 20 yards and also fumbled twice, although neither led to turnovers.
"Offensively, there are some plays we missed that we need to make," Turner said.
The Cowboys will bring in new faces with receiver Keyshawn Johnson, running back Eddie George and quarterback Vinny Testaverde.
Testaverde took the starting role after the Cowboys cut Quincy Carter on Aug. 4. Testaverde was 4-of-7 for 34 yards against Texas. George ran for 12 yards on five carries before giving way to the backups.
* Raiders Notebook
Offensive lineman Robert Gallery, the Oakland Raiders' top draft pick who went down with a right elbow injury during practice Monday, will not play tonight. Gallery is expected to get
back to practice on Monday ... Guard Ron Stone will play tonight. Turner said he'd get in on 12 to 14 plays.
wazzup, Raider Nation!
With training camp opening soon the Raiders, along with the 31 other NFL
teams, will be making a lot of tough decisions regarding personnel. Because
of the salary cap you'll definitely see a lot of players being dropped. Now
in the case of C Barrett Robbins & S Rod Woodson, they each failed physicals
due to injuries from last season & were both waived.
Any of you who have plans to attend any Raiders games in 2004,
pre-season or regular season, can purchase them thru TICKETMASTER
(http://www.ticketmaster.com)
The Raiders final pre-season game, Thursday Sept. 2nd at the Oakland
Coliseum against St. Louis, will be televised LIVE on the NFL Network at
10:00pm EST(7:00pm PST).
As always, I'll do my best to keep you posted on any happenings in the

It's WAY early to be predicting the outcome of the Super Bowl. There
are three VERY important things to remember:
1. We are still paying back a $25Million cap overage.
2. The AFC-West is still the toughest division in the NFL (Oakland,
Denver,KC)
3. We are playing the teams in the NFC-South this year. It is also a
very tough division. Two head coaches in this division are ex-Raider
head coaches. Look for some stiff competition from Tampa Bay and
Carolina as well as New Orleans.
I hope that we at least make the playoffs this year. It's not the
same without the Silver and Black.

Does anyone have the clip of where Bo Jackson had like an 80
something yard run and he was running so hard he couldnt stop and
ended up running through the endzone and into a tunnel in the
stadium to stop. I love watching that on t.v and would like to be
able to have it on my comp.

My favorite growing up was Lyle, however, what he did caused him to live a short life. He was one of the greatest middle linebackers, to bad he thought he had to have the drugs to do it...
My second favorite was the 70's Raiders, there were to many greats in that era to call a favorite... That was the day Team work had a whole new meaning...
Current favorite has to be Timmy Brown. We will never have another Timmy...
Just my fav's
good question though

wonderfulkat™@yahoo.com wrote:
Turner encouraged by mini-camp workouts By Darren Sabedra, Mercury News
Norv Turner will learn much more about his team when training camp begins next month. But to this point, the new Raiders coach is mostly encouraged by what he has seen.
Thursday, the Raiders completed the second of their two off-season mini-camps, a day highlighted by Kerry Collins' eye-opening, 30-yard laser into double coverage that hit rookie receiver Carlos Francis in stride.
In five practices this week over three days, Rich Gannon and Collins threw effectively, much-maligned cornerback Phillip Buchanon received multiple praises from Turner and defensive lineman Tyler Brayton maintained his perfect off-season attendance -- 52 for 52 in the weight room and 24 for 24 on the practice field.
"This is a great time of
year," Turner said. "We're not concerned about playing a game. We're coaching everybody and getting ready to go to camp. I told the guys this morning, `When camp opens, it changes. The sense of urgency goes up dramatically. You've got 15 days before your first preseason game, and you don't get a lot of do-overs.' "
Francis is paying attention and plans to keep working diligently in the weeks leading up to the first training-camp practice July 30 in Napa.
"I'm going to catch about 10 million balls and run about 10 million routes," said Francis, a former Texas Tech standout drafted in the fourth round. "This is what we get paid for, and I have to have my mind and body ready."
Buchanon appears to have that mindset, as well. Although he was absent Thursday (all practices this week were voluntary), he seems to be making strides toward putting his struggles behind him.
"I am saying he is
playing like a starting corner," Turner said. "I really believe Phillip Buchanon, the experience he's had, the work he has done, he has had a great off-season. I think he will have a great year."
• Another player Turner has raved about is rookie tight end Courtney Anderson, who was drafted out of San Jose State in the seventh round, but that could soon change.
"I was bragging about him and he came out and dropped about four passes," Turner said. "So I'm not going to say too many good things. But he's been impressive."
Contact Darren Sabedra at dsabedra@... or (408) 920-5815.
I'm not sure if everyone has heard, but Doug Gabriel is looking like
the guy that will be starting opposite of Jerry Porter when preseason
starts anyway. They are gonna give him a chance because he's a
physical wide out and runs nice routes and has been really impressing
everyone out there.
Now I don't know how that increases the chance of Rice and Brown
getting cut at some point, but keep your eyes and ears close by. The
two receivers we drafted will be a big help I think too. Francis and
Morant should be a pleasant suprise this season.

Well I never really post but this QB crap stinks. I just had to voice my say. I say we keep the one arm Gannon and hope, pray or what ever you wish to do on a healthy return to his MVP status. But we all know how that will trun out. If Gannon stays and starts off the season the same as last year, you know who will be the starter.
We need WR's. Now here is a problem. If Gannon leaves then we can use that money and get a good WR or 2.
So here is my QB list.
1. Collins (Starter in my book)
2. Gannon (Was always a back up in my Book)
3. Tuiasosopo (Missed his chance at starting QB)
4. Martin (He could be a good QB. Needs more time)
5. Johnson (We will need him after Gannon goes down in the first 3 Weeks if he Starts)
I don't think we're in alot of trouble in Oakland.. I just think there are more question marks w/this signing of Collins and sudden decision to keep Gannon. None of our draft picks are signed... Just a lil nugget for ya... Our wide out situation is one of growing concern. We have Porter and Jolley, but who after that? I like the rookies we got, but when will they be able to step in and contribute?
Maybe we can get lucky and our defense will be able to hold up the O until they get it together. Forrreal though people... Will Gannon succeed in a offense that's gonna test his arm? And non-contact practice throws don't mean shit, John Elway can still proly go out there and sling the ball, yall feel where I'm comin from? I say we cut Gannon...
1. collins
2. tuiasosopo
3. tee martin
4. johnson
