SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Alex Smith took a few lumps. Randy Moss barely got touched.

And Tim Rattay showed he's ready to fight.

After No. 1 draft pick Smith struggled in his first NFL action, Rattay threw touchdown passes to Brandon Lloyd and Arnaz Battle early in the second half of San Francisco's 21-13 victory over the Oakland Raiders in the annual preseason Battle of the Bay on Saturday night.

Rookie cornerback Derrick Johnson returned an interception 87 yards for a touchdown as the 49ers, shut out in the first half, scored 21 points in 4 1/2 minutes early in the third quarter behind Rattay, who's not ready to concede the 49ers' quarterback competition to the $49.5 million rookie.

Smith's first taste of the NFL was slightly bitter: He went 3-for-9 for 25 yards and got sacked by Warren Sapp while the 49ers failed to get a first down in his first four series in charge of the offense.

After two strong weeks of training camp, Smith earned this start -- and though he was scheduled to run only about 20 plays, he ended up playing the entire first half because the 49ers couldn't mount a significant drive.

``Obviously, I made some mistakes, especially early,'' Smith said. ``There were some balls that I would like to have back, but that's why it's preseason. That's why I'm out here.''

Rattay, the 49ers' starter for nine games last season, quickly showed why rookie coach Mike Nolan might be unwise to put Smith in charge immediately. The veteran was sharp from the first snap of the second half, quickly leading a 65-yard drive capped by a superb 36-yard TD throw to Lloyd.

The victory meant something to Nolan and the 49ers, who went winless in the last preseason before finishing 2-14.

Meanwhile, Moss caught one pass in two quiet series while wearing his silver-and-black No. 18 jersey for the first time. The Raiders acquired Moss from Minnesota to recharge their offense, but they're clearly waiting to showcase his talents.

Kerry Collins didn't even appear to look in Moss' direction during Oakland's game-opening 10-play drive, but Collins hit Moss on an 11-yard out route on the first play of the second series.

Moss didn't touch the ball again, and he didn't mind.

``You could see at any given time, our offense can move up and down the field,'' Moss said. ``We've got a hellacious offensive line and a great quarterback. It's up to us to make it happen. We can give anyone the ball and move it up the field.''

Running back LaMont Jordan, the Raiders' other prize offseason acquisition, rushed four times for 23 yards. Collins was 8-for-12 for 68 yards in his two series with Moss, but the Raiders managed just one field goal out of two lengthy drives for the first-team offense.

Rookie Andrew Walter threw the Raiders' only touchdown pass, connecting with Randal Williams early in the fourth quarter.

Smith's first pass with the 49ers flew over Lloyd's head on a rollout on the opening series. Smith then got sacked by Bobby Hamilton in the second series, but the 21-year-old bounced up.

Early in the second quarter, Sapp beat backup offensive lineman Scott Peters and sacked Smith. On the fourth drive, Smith then made two poor throws to Johnnie Morton, with one going behind the veteran receiver and the other falling short.

The 49ers finally got a first down with 1:04 left in the first half when Oakland's Tyler Brayton hit Smith after the quarterback stepped out of bounds, drawing a personal foul. The cheap shot also sparked some emotion in San Francisco, with Kevan Barlow and Smith's linemen going after Brayton in a brief scuffle.

Johnson, a sixth-round pick from Washington who shares the name of Kansas City's highly touted rookie linebacker, stepped in front of Marques Tuiasosopo's underthrown pass and ran 87 yards untouched early in the third quarter.

When Fred Amey recovered LaShaun Ward's fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Rattay quickly hit Battle with a 13-yard TD strike. Rattay finished 4-for-5 for 88 yards.
