RE: [GleannAbhannEquestrian] Digest Number 17

If I remember correctly, the Spade is the final peak of training for a Spanish/California reining horse. They start in a hackamore, move up thru a snaffle, then curb and finally the spade. it's supposed to take about 6 or 7 years to turn out a finished reining horse.

I thought it was interesting that the bit was found on the Iberian peninsula.  Spade bits have long been popular in Spain.  Now I know how long!
Spade bits should only be used by experienced riders on well-trained horses.  These bits are used with an extremely light touch.

On an unrelated note, If anyone knows of anyone who is looking for a horse, there is a registered Paint for sale in Haughton, LA (near Shreveport).  He is a 7 year old gelding, red dun tobiano (a light color, almost looks palomino).  He is tall, 16:1 or 16:2.  He is also very calm with a beautiful head, arabianish looking.  He hasn't been ridden in a long time, so needs to be reminded of his manners, but the training is definitely there.  Good on trails or in the arena.  His owner can't afford him and doesn't have time for him.  His tack is included with the sale (Western synthetic).  To see him or to take a test ride, email me off list.
