The motto of the SCA is "an attempt" at recreating medieval period.
You will distinctly notice it when you go to events. just count the
number of tennis shoes worn.
The wagons havent changed very much since medieval times. Roman and
late 14th/15th designs have spoked wheels, single piece fellies,
pivoting front axles, artillery wheels, suspensions and steel tyres.
although the wagons differ geography and there was some decline in
some technology.
harnesss are about the same evolved from throat harnesses, to breast
harnesses to collars about 8th to 9th century.
funny you should mention a chariot, they were in use between 3000 bc
till about 800bc, with climax about 1300 bc. romans used them for
sport racing till about 600ad. but did not use them for war.
My first attempt was with miniature horses and a little red wagon.
my redneck engineering made the amish look like rocket scientists.
the rope harnesses probably was on the technology level of the 3000bc
chariot harnesses.
my problem was with the horses, they wasnt trained to drive nor was
i. I thought they was pretty bombproof, built a barn and corrals
around them, they wasnt afraid of powertools, noises, sudden
movements, strange objects....etc. something about the squeek of the
little red wagon at thier butts though... probably should write the
whole story down, so everyone can laugh at my stupidity.
learned lots of lessons from them though.
