Re: [GleannAbhannEquestrian] Getting Started

Smythkeep is in Fort Smith, Arkansas. (North Western part of the state)  As far as I know the closest SCA Equestrians are at least 2 hrs away, if not more.  I am looking at having to build all of my practice gear, not just sword and ring lance, but also the rings and the stakes the rings are attached to.  Do you know where a link to good diagrams are?  I'd also appreciate links to equipment, garb and etc. if you have them handy.  Also, the chefron for the horse's head and eye gear (for heavy combat) what would you recommend?

We did our first non SCA parade in garb... he handles harness well, along with my long cloak and dress.  It was a Christmas parade so I had bells on him, he pretty much tolerates whatever I want to do to him. Percherons are great (so is my carrot stick and a plastic bag).  I've carried flags on horses before, broke horses to flags so the equipment shouldn't be a prob. It's just learning how to make it and after we are safe, getting approved for combat, then learning where the Equine events are being held.

Besides neck reining, what other skills are needed? What are all the games that are held at various events?

Thank you so much for the suggestions and encouragement.

Amber

Amber,

The best way to start is at home.  Keep working with Dubh.  He will need to neck-rein to participate in most games since you will have a spear or sword in one hand.  Also you will need to introduce him to the sword and spear.  Do this on the ground first.  Wave them near him until his accepts this strange activity then work up to waving them close to him (make sure you don't accidentally hit him!)  You should also be able to stroke him with the weapons anywhere on his body.  When he accepts all this calmly, then move on to doing this while mounted.  After that, introduce him to the various equipment used in the games (reeds, Saracen heads, rings, etc. )  If you plan on using a period costume on him, you will need to introduce him to that as well, especially if it is full barding with lots of flapping cloth.  Dubh will also need to be accustomed to loading and hauling.

Where is Smythekep?  I am in the Shire of Ardanroe which is near Shreveport, LA.

Find out if there are any fellow SCA equestrians near you that you might be able to practice with.
