"Well, at least it was run better than the 10k."--HM In reference to the Sale
City 5k this past weekend.

On a side note, both this 5k and the mentioned 10k suffered from an acute case
of "no one knows about your race itis." More commonly referred to as the, "You
didn't advertise your race" bug. Congrats to all the winners, though.
Including the first timers!

Disc golf comes to Freedom Park

Christian Malone
The Valdosta Daily Times

— By Christian Malone
The Valdosta Daily Times
VALDOSTA — Disc golf has come to Valdosta.
The area’s first disc golf course opened in July at Valdosta’s Freedom Park. The course is open to anyone who wishes to play, and there is no cost. Players must bring their own discs.

On Saturday, the course hosted its first disc golf tournament, the Valdosta Open. The players played two rounds on Saturday, and the final round will begin at 9 a.m. today.

“To finally get the course put in, have the first tournament, just getting the recognition of the actual sport in the Valdosta area (is great),” said tournament director Geoffrey “Toad” McReynolds.

The tournament attracted several local players, as well as players from Tennessee, Atlanta, Albany and Florida. McReynolds leads the Open division with a two-round total of 96. Chris Blanton of Valdosta leads the Open Masters division with a 105. Ryan Banning of Albany leads the Advanced division with a 111. Rob McGee of Valdosta leads the Recreational division with a 121.
In disc golf (which has also been called Frisbee golf), players play 18 holes, like they do in regular golf, but they do it with a disc. The hole in disc golf is usually a pole set up on the course with a basket on it. The score is usually determined by the number of throws it takes to get the disc in the basket (like stroke play in golf). Disc golf also has match play, skins, speed golf and doubles formats.

The terminology for scoring is the same as in regular golf, with eagles, birdies, pars and bogeys.

Disc golf discs are smaller and heavier than a normal Frisbee. Players who are more serious about the game usually carry a bag of discs, because there are discs that are specifically designed for different shots, from driving to mid-range shots to putting. The shape of the edges of the disc determines what shot it is best for. Less-serious players can play their rounds with just one disc. A traditional Frisbee weighs 100 grams, while disc golf discs range in weight from 150-180 grams. The increased weight helps the discs fly further, and with more control.

Disc golf is inexpensive (the only expense to play at Freedom Park is the cost of the disc), and can be played by people of all ages and athletic abilities. There are an estimated 3,000 disc golf courses in the United States, and the game is also played in 40 countries worldwide. There is a disc golf course on every continent (even Antarctica). The game is regulated by the Professional Disc Golf Association.

McReynolds was one of the people who got disc golf started at Freedom Park. A staff sergeant stationed at Moody Air Force Base, and a world-class disc golfer — he was ranked in the top two nationally in Germany, and was No. 8 in Europe at one point — he and a group of fellow disc golfers talked the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority into building a course. McReynolds designed the course.

“It is an extremely fair course,” McReynolds said. “The guy from Atlanta (playing in the tournament) has played hundreds of courses, and he said this is in his top 10 of courses to come out and play.
“Everything has been put in place for the public to use, and that is courtesy of the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation (Authority). They stepped up, and have helped us out a lot.”

Over half of the holes at Freedom Park are located in a wooded area, which provides an obstacle for players, and makes accurate shots very important. The course is designed for players of all levels, from beginner to advanced to professional. There are three tees on each hole; the red tees (which are the shortest distance) are for recreational players, the white tees are for more advanced players and the blue tees (which are the longest distance) are for the professionals.

McReynolds opened the course in impressive fashion. In July, playing in the first group to ever play the course, he got a hole-in-one on his first hole. He got his second hole-in-one on Saturday, with an ace on the 70-yard seventh hole.
McReynolds and other local disc golfers hope their sport can grow in Valdosta.

“Anybody can play (disc golf) at any age. It doesn’t matter about handicaps, size, gender or age. I know 78-year-old guys that still come out and play. I know a guy in Jacksonville, Fla. that got struck by lightning in his younger days, and walks with a cane, and he can come out and play disc golf. I’ve got a 3-year-old son, an 11-year-old son and a 7-year-old son, and the three of them can play at any time. We’ve got people from all walks of life. It’s good for everybody. It’s a good form of exercise, similar to hiking, except you’re getting an upper-body workout from throwing 175 grams all the time.

“And it’s a free sport to play. It’s not like traditional golf, where you have to pay $50 every time you want to play. You can come out here, buy a couple of discs, and you can play for the next six years.”

McReynolds also points out that disc golf can be played year-round.

Disc golf originated in the 1960s, and the first course was built in 1975 in San Diego, Calif.

An organization, the Valdosta Disc Golf Association, has been formed to try to promote the sport locally. Discs can be purchased at Get Active — Running and More in Valdosta.

NOTE:  Saturday Ride time is 8am. It will be on the cool side so arm warmers and leg warmers may be needed.  Please try to have a tail light in case of fog.  Saturday's morning ride will begin from the parking lot next to The Wooden Nickel Pub on Inner Perimeter Rd across from Wal-Mart.

With colder temperatures coming, be sure to check your email on Friday’s to see if ride time is changed due to the cold. Our standard ride time is 8am but I will change the ride time when temp is 45 degrees or below.  My goal is to set a ride time when the temp is 50 degrees give or take a few.

Alternative Ride

For those who may be interested in a ride alternative to the usual Saturday morning ride, I would like to invite you to join my wife, son and myself to do a 50 miler at a much slower pace than the normal Saturday group ride.  My son is working on completing his cycling merit badge and it requires a 50 mile bike ride.  We will ride from my house at 8am.  Address is below.  Come join us if you can.  The wind will be out of the ENE tomorrow so we will probably ride to Lakeland and back using the back roads from my house.  Come join us if you want a more relaxed ride.  I expect our average speed to be around 15-17 mph.

Saturday rides usually break up into two to three groups based upon speed and distance after the first few miles of warm up. There should be a group to meet everyone's needs. Please make sure at the beginning of the ride distances are discussed and identify who is going short and long so that new people can know who to ride with.

If you plan on a Sunday ride please send an e-mail with start time and location if you want someone to join. Sunday is usually an off day for most of our club members.

The 6pm Tues and Thursday night rides are still going strong.  We meet and ride from the Perimeter Road Baptist church parking lot located on Inner Perimeter Rd.  With it getting dark we are mostly just doing the 25 mile out and back ride. If you do not have a head light and tail light, now will be a good time to get one. Lights are required now that the time has changed.

NOTE:  If you are purchasing a new lighting system, I strongly recommend the helmet mount headlight over the handlebar mount. There are about 8 to 10 of us who do night rides throughout the fall and winter months weather temperature permitting.  Come join us if you can.

Hope you get this on time, sorry I didn't inform you about my trip in UK for a Program, I'm
presently in UK and am having some difficulties here because i misplaced my wallet on my way to the hotel where my money and other valuable things were kept. presently  i have limited access to internet,I will like you to assist me with a loan of $500 to sort-out my hotel bills and to get myself back home.

I have spoken to the embassy here but they are not responding to the matter effectively, but the
Embassy issued me a temporary ID to receive money. Thanks for your kindness and support, I have made inquiry on how you can send me the money and I was told that Western Union Money Transfer is the easiest and fastest way to transfer money to United Kingdom. Here is the information you should send the money to

ahmed baki
404 Station Road, Solihull,
Birmingham UK

Write me immediately, so i know when the money has been wired, send me the western union money transfer receipt or just write out the details on the receipt and send to me. this mystery is enough..
Thank you.

Send Email Send Email

NOTE:  Saturday Ride time is 8am. It will be on the cool side so arm warmers and leg warmers are strongly recommended.  Please try to have a tail light in case of fog.

With colder temperatures coming, be sure to check your email on Friday’s to see if ride time is changed due to the cold. Our standard ride time is 8am but I will change the ride time when temp is 45 degrees or below.  My goal is to set a ride time when the temp is 50 degrees give or take a few.

Tomorrow, several riders will be doing an 80 to 100 miler.  The main group will be doing a 50 miler.  For those who are going long, I plan on leading the group to Nashville.  At this point those who are going long and short will split up.  For those who will be doing the longer route can then follow the Hahira Honey Bee Festival Century route from there (The road will be marked).  This should be a favorable route since both groups should have a good tail wind home if the wind stays out of the Northwest.

Saturday rides usually break up into two to three groups based upon speed and distance after the first few miles of warm up. There should be a group to meet everyone's needs. Please make sure at the beginning of the ride distances are discussed and identify who is going short and long so that new people can know who to ride with.

Saturday's morning ride will begin from the parking lot next to The Wooden Nickel Pub on Inner Perimeter Rd across from Wal-Mart.

Hope to see you all in the morning!

Runners,

Head on over to Target and get yourself a knit hat or pair of gloves from the dollar section at the front of the store.  They have assorted colors in adults' and childrens' sizes, plus scarves, mittens, and fingerless gloves.  Thin knit accessories are just right for running in winter in South Georgia--enough to save your parts from getting frostbite, but breathable so you won't overheat while training or racing.  Also makes a great stocking stuffer.  Our family is set through the end of Obama's third term.

Sisu,
John

Disc Golf in Valdosta

The following segment is offered by Mark Van Nortwick.

Valdosta has been invaded by “Flying Saucers”. That is Flying Discs. Disc Golf is a fairly new and exciting sport, played just like “Ball” Golf, but by walking and throwing a “Frisbee” into a disc catching “Basket”.  Players range from young to not as young, making this a life- long sport to enjoy and keep fit. Individuals can play, or whole families can play together. Most courses average 2 miles walked and stretching is important for straighter shots. Some players run and throw to speed up the game. Disc Golf is played in over 40 countries worldwide and now has come to our town. The Valdosta Parks Dept., course designer Geoffrey “Toad” Mc Reynolds, along with volunteers from our local community and Moody A.F.B. has installed a fun and challenging course at Freedom Park off N. Bemiss Rd. in the rear of the park.

The Valdosta Disc Golf Assoc. has been recently started to help promote the sport of Disc Golf in our area. The club is made up of local players whose main goal is to help people get started in playing this fantastic sport. As soon as you make a long throw into the basket, you’re hooked for life, I always say. The VDGA has meetings periodically and helps the park maintain the local course. With quite a few courses in our area, Suwannee Music Park, FL, Cheehaw Park in Albany, GA, ” It’s nice to have a course close by” says Mike Sumner, a local advanced player.

Disc Golf can definitely give you a workout and it’s nice to get out, enjoy the local wildlife, and use this great park. I am amazed that ESPN hasn’t jumped all over this because it’s very cool to watch a disc fly, roll or skip right where you want it. As “new” as this sport is, I haven’t seen too many people try it and not like it. If you like a challenge or just a fun day at the park, Disc Golf is for you. Kids love it, and most everyone can throw a “Frisbee”. Now, for those who can really throw a disc, The VDGA, along with help of local sponsors, is putting on a tournament November 20-22 at Freedom Park. All are welcome to play or watch. For more info and equipment call Get Active Running Store at 229-219-0010 or Professional Disc Golf Association, PDGA.com.

We will be going to the Cozomel – leave on Thursday afternoon and return on Monday [President’s Day] morning. Contact South Georgia Travel in Valdosta for more details. The deposit is required now to assure the price and availability.
