Re: [GetActiveSouthGeorgia] FW: Jogger Death in Fitzgerald this AM

Wow, that is horrible.  I get bored as hec on long runs but I don't like to wear headphones for reasons such as traffic, but even more because I run alone on back roads and I am scared some creepy person might jump out of the woods or even a dog might come towards me.  If I have headphones on I doubt I would hear either (or traffic).  Maybe anyone who 'needs' to wear their headphones to run/walk/workout could still do so but try and turn down the volume.  For 10, 40, 60 minutes or even 5 hours (if anyone is running that long good on ya) of your life you can go without music.  This subject is certainly something to think about.

Could we have a positive note now?  I feel horrible.

Todd,

Our community was struck by tragedy this AM when a local lady who jogged
every morning was killed in an accident. She was on her regular jog on a
paved road in the country (Old Whitley Crossing Road). This was her usual
jogging route. She was moving across the road to move out of the way of the
oncoming traffic that she saw coming and was hit from behind when she moved
into the other lane of traffic. SHE WAS WEARING HEADPHONES AND LISTENING TO
SOME SORT OF MEDIA AND DID NOT HEAR THE VEHICAL COMING FROM BEHIND.

Please stress to the team and runners in the Valdosta area the importance of
being able to hear your surroundings when you run. Ms. Williams could
possibly be alive if she had been able to hear the oncoming traffic from
behind. Sad event in our community.

Thanks for all you do. Hope you are having a good day!
