Well, I just got back from Lake Placid, NY, where I skated in the Silver II Mens event.

The Good:
There were over 600 competitors this year ranging in age from 25 to their 70s.  I got to see a lot of my friends skate, make a few new friends, and had a great time.  A lot of my friends either made it to their final rounds or even medalled.  Some came home with several medals.

You can see all the results at:

The Bad:
This is my first year to skate at the Silver level at AN, and I am told that I skated my program well.  It's hard to know how you do while skating.  You know if you land jumps or hold spins, but you don't know how you look, or how you compare to others in your group.  Since, I didn't watch anyone else in my group, I have no idea of what elements they even did.  I am waiting to get the DVD so that I can do my own judging.

The reason for the previous paragraph is that I came in 13th out of 13.  I felt that I skated my program as good as I could have. I hit all my jumps and all the spins.  I felt like I could have skated a little faster, but when I got off the ice, I was very happy with what I had done.

When talking to friends after my skate, they said I really skated well, and Tina Gravenstein (multiple medallist) said she was really impressed, since she hadn't seen me skate in a while. However, they all said it was a very tough group.  The guy who skated just before me (and won the event) even did a double toe- loop - during the warm up!  The highest jump you can do in a Silver program is an Axel.  So, he was definitely sand-bagging.

You can see the scores of my group at:

It was definitely a humbling experience.  Especially, since the last time I went to AN, I had a really bad skate in Bronze, and still came in the top half of the group.  I guess moving up to Silver was not the best move on my part.

Hopefully, it will force me to get my butt in gear and do better next time.
