Wayne Barker, a local racer that I have been aquainted with since 1974, passed away last Fall. Wayne has been a paraplegic since a traffic accident in the early sixties. However, his handicap did not stop him from following his racing dream. He built and drove this Nova for several years, running in modified production, gas, and even in pro stock. He had the car hooked up with hand controls for everything. The car had a clutch-turbo trans. to eliminate the extra clutch work. In the mid seventies, Wayne turned the driving over to his brother, Stanley. Over the next two decades Wayne continued to build race cars and street rods. He was in big demand in this area for his fabrication abillities. The last car Wayne Barker built was a pro mod Monte Carlo SS named "Super Toy". He and his brother Stanley had the distinction of being the first super charged pro mod car to quallify at an IHRA national event.Wayne Barker willed his garrage and cars to his Nephew Garrett Barker who had worked closely with him for years and took care of him in his last days. Garrett recently loaned Wayne's old photos to me to scan. The photo attached was taken at "Paradise Drag Strip", Calhoun, Georgia in 1971. Both cars have Pro on their windows.I also attached a photo of the last race car Wayne Barker built, the pro mod Monte Carlo SS.Wayne Holland.
