*** Dew Tour Time Tells All In BMX SX Final ***

Salt Lake City, Utah -- 09/22/2007
For the third year running, the Toyota Challenge hosted BMX racers
from around the world, in a special Supercross event. This weekend,
a total of 88 BMX racers flew into Salt Lake City and began their
competition with Time Trial Qualifiers on Friday. From Time Trials,
64 racers moved through to race in the Olympic Qualifying Supercross
race on Saturday.

Mother Nature was unfortunately not on the racers' side, and five heats
into the eight heat race, the skies opened up and the rain started coming
down. That coupled with a dash of thunder, was enough for event
organizers to pull the plug on the BMX SX event.

Due to the unfavorable weather conditions, final results have been
determined from Friday's Time Trials, and it was American BMXer Mike
Day who was fastest on the track during Trials. Coming in second place
(based on Friday's time trials) is Robert DeWilde (NED) and third place
goes to Manuel DeVecchi of Italy.

BMX Supercross Final Results (based on Time Trial Qualifiers)

1. Mike Day (USA)
2. Robert DeWilde (NED)
3. Manuel DeVecchi (ITA)
4. Michal Prokup (CZE)
5. Raymo Van Der Biezen (NED)
6. Steven Cisar (USA)
7. Kyle Bennet (USA)

*** Will The IOC Welcome SkateBoarders? ***

Salt Lake City, Utah -- 09/23/2007
At the AST Dew Tour in Salt Lake City, People wonder
with the first Olympic medals set to be awarded next year in BMX
supercross, the question remains if skateboarders and BMX riders
will be welcomed in masse come 2012.

The International Olympic Committee has started talks with the
International Cycling Union about taking over as a governing body
for skateboarding. That would set the stage for it to be added for
the London Games.

"It's highly likely,'' USA Cycling CEO Stephen Johnson said.
"I think it's almost guaranteed. I think the IOC has made a
commitment to add sports that probably would be considered
more relevant to today's youth."

The IOC wants to work with an existing governing body and
the UCI makes sense for a AST Dew Tour in SLC sport on wheels.
Another part of the plan is to set up a half-pipe in the middle of a
velodrome so the same facility could be used for skateboarding
and cycling.

Several Dew Tour athletes said skateboarding and BMX
immediately would become two of the most popular Olympic sports.
The success of snowboarding at the Winter Olympics has not gone
unnoticed.

"I think it'd be an edge to the Olympics that they're actually kind
of losing right now,'' skateboarder Pierre-Luc Gagnon said. "If you
ask me, skateboarding's so much more appealing than any of the
track and field events and so much more creative."

Not that there aren't detractors. Rune Glifberg said he would
advocate against skateboarding's inclusion in the Olympics
and would compete "just to put Denmark on the map."

"Skateboarding doesn't need the Olympics,''
Glifberg said. "Skateboarding's fine the way it is."

If this weekend is any indication, the sports certainly have an
international footprint. There were skateboarders competing in
Salt Lake City from the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Denmark, France,
Brazil and Sweden.

Dew Tour Rain and Records:

The Dew Tour will release attendance figures today, but Saturday
was estimated to be the best attended day in tour history. The tour
was averaging better than 53,000 fans in each city this season, but
Salt Lake is expected to top those numbers.

The rain washed out the BMX supercross finals and forced
the postponement of the skateboard park finals until today.

*** Day Comes Out On Top Of BMX Supercross ***

Salt Lake City, Utah (USA Cycling) -- 09/23/2007
On September 22, 2007 Mike Day (Santa Clarita, Calif.) came out
on top of the rain shortened third round of the UCI BMX Supercross
World Cup in Salt Lake City. Saturday's inclement weather forced
UCI officials to forgo the final rounds of the competition and award
the win to the top time trial finishers.

Once the seeding was decided in Friday's time trial qualifying,
Saturday's racing began with one set of 1/8th finals. The original
schedule called for three rounds, but the competition had to be
cut to one due to the threatening weather. After half of the 1/8ths
were contested, the rain settled in, postponing the race indefinitely.
After more than two hours of waiting for the rain to subside, the
race was called around 4:30 p.m.

Posting Friday's top qualifying time, Day was named the overall winner.
Robert de Wilde of the Netherlands was awarded the silver after putting
up the second fastest qualifying time and Manuel dev Vecchi (ITL) was
third. Two more Americans came out in the top eight with Steven Cisar
(Altadena, Calif.) claiming sixth and Kyle Bennett (Conroe, Texas)
seventh.

The Salt Lake City stop is the third World Cup this season following the
season-opener in Madrid in April and the official Olympic Test Event in
Beijing last month. The series concludes in October in Fréjus, France.
Salt Lake City's Supercross World Cup circuit is also the sixth of 17
events that factor into USA Cycling's 2008 BMX Rankings - the primary
factor which determines the Olympic Long Team for the 2008 Beijing
Games.

*** AST Dew Tour Wraps Up Salt Lake City ***

Salt Lake City, Utah -- 09/23/2007
The AST Dew Tour wrapped up its fourth event of the
2007 season with the completion of the Toyota Challenge
on Sunday at EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Toyota Challenge event winners included:
Jamie Bestwick (BMX Vert), James Foster (BMX Dirt),
Nate Adams (FMX), Ryan Sheckler (SKB Park), Pierre
Luc-Gagnon (SKB Vert), and Scotty Cranmer (BMX Park).

The four-day competition drew 61,910 fans, the largest recorded
attendance in AST Dew Tour history. The five-event AST Dew Tour
that features skateboarding (SKB), BMX and freestyle motocross
(FMX) will next visit Orlando for its finale, the PlayStation Pro
October 18-21.

Despite ending his win streak in AST Dew Tour competition this season,
Shaun White's disappointment quickly disappeared when he learned that
his third-place finish was good enough to mathematically clinch his first
Dew Cup during Sunday's Toyota Challenge at EnergySolutions Arena.

White, 21, of Carlsbad, Calif., was leading Sunday's Skateboard
Vert finals and en route to another victory, when he fell midway
through his third run to finish with an 88.25 score. But his previous
three wins this season meant his third place finish was good enough
to clinch the Skateboard Vert title by just one point.

"I've been trying the best I can, but you got to make a mistake here
or there," White said. "It just feels amazing to have already clinched
the Dew Cup heading into Orlando."

Pierre-Luc Gagnon, 28, of Montreal won the competition with a score
of 93.00 and Bucky Lasek of Baltimore, MD placed second with 91.00.

"I was pretty disappointed in my first two runs," Gagnon said. "I waited
until the last chance to do it and pulled it out. I just want to keep
skating
well and keep positive for Orlando."

Ryan Sheckler clinched his third consecutive Dew Cup
title in Skateboard Park with a victory in Sunday's finals.

Sheckler, 17, of San Clemente, Calif., who also stars in his own MTV
reality show called "Life of Ryan," earned a score of 87.58. Despite falls
during his initial runs, Sheckler performed successive rail tricks in the
second half of his jam session to seal the victory. His technical tricks
included a kickflip 50-50 and a 360 flip.

"I was so tired this morning, I couldn't even kickflip," said Sheckler,
who competed in a best trick event last night in lieu of the originally
scheduled Skateboard Park finals which were postponed due to
Saturday's weather. "I was lucky to pull it all together in the finals."

Roldolfo Ramos and Rodil Araujo Jr., both of Brazil, finished
behind Sheckler with scores of 82.58 and 82.08, respectively.

In a tough competition filled with several highly technical tricks,
Scotty Cranmer narrowly edged out Australia's Ryan Guettler
to win the BMX Park finals.

Cranmer, 20, of Jackson, N.J., secured the win by completing a
front flip tailwhip, the first time it was ever performed in competition
for a 93.17 score.

"I came around and as soon as I felt the bike grab
and rolled away, I was like `Yeah!'," Cranmer said.

Cranmer said he has been trying to perform the
trick for years, and only landed it in recent weeks.

"That's the only reason I came here, was to land that trick,"
Cranmer added.

Guettler finished with a 92.50 score and Ryan Nyquist of
Greenville, N.C. finished in third with a score of 91.67.

Jamie Bestwick moved closer to a third straight Dew Cup by winning
the BMX vert finals and James Foster claimed his first AST Dew Tour
victory in the BMX dirt finals on Friday.

Bestwick, 36, scored 94.00 points to beat the 92.50 of fellow Briton
Simon Tabron. Australia's Steven McCann was third with 91.00 points.

Bestwick has won at 11 of 14 Dew Tour stops since 2005.

"I have a few good things I've been working on that I plan to
showcase in Orlando in the finals," Bestwick said. "There's a
lot on the line next month. I'm going to work on the things that
I couldn't get done here and try to give it to the fans in Florida."

Foster, 21, of Redlands, Calif., clinched the victory with a highly
technical flawless final run to finish with a 93.25 average score.
Foster's previous best finish this season was seventh.

"I gave it everything I could," Foster said. "I was just trying to
make the podium and the windshield wiper (highly technical
tailwhip trick) did it. I'm seriously ecstatic … I don't know
what to say."

Cameron White of Australia finished second with a 92.92 and
Mike Aitken of Salt Lake City was third with a score of 90.50.

Nate Adams clinched his second consecutive Dew Cup title in
Freestyle Motocross (FMX) with a victory in Saturday's FMX finals.

On his first run, Adams pulled a back flip on a 95 foot gap,
giving him a 93.33 score, which was good enough for the victory.

"I'm just really pumped," Adams said. "I always go in trying to win
or at least get top three on the podium. I knew I had to do something
special to separate myself from the rest of the pack."

Todd Potter of Temecula, Calif. finished second with a score of
89.67 and Jeremy Lusk of San Diego, Calif. was third at 89.50.

Adams, 23, of Glendale, Ariz., has won three of the four AST
Dew Tour events this season which enabled him to mathematically
clinch the title on Saturday.

"It's pretty sweet to win the Dew Tour again," Adams
said. "Now it's back to Orlando for the last stop."

*** Kelso Struggles To Find Skate Park Money ***

Kelso, Washington -- 09/23/2007
If the city of Kelso wins a $150,000 state grant for a
long-awaited skateboard park, the community should
be prepared to pony up more cash.

The two state grants the city is applying for both require a 50
percent match, said Community Development Director Mike Kerins.
The anticipated cost of the skate park in North Kelso has risen to
$300,000, he said Friday.

City Council members asked Tuesday if the value of the land on
which the park will be built may be counted toward the city's match.
The answer is no, Kerins said. However, the value of volunteer labor
to build and landscape the park will count, "so that's something we're
going to look into," he said.

The grant application for the state Community Trade and Economic
Development grant is Oct. 1. If the city wins the grant, it must come
up with $150,000 by February, Kerins said. If Kelso can't cough up the
money by then, its application will be withdrawn, and the city will try
for a second $150,000 grant from another state agency next spring,
he said.

"The idea is, let's not stop trying for this grant," Kerins said.
"We're still trying to breathe life into this whole thing."

Kelso Rotary has donated $45,000 toward the project. In April, an
anonymous donor promised $10,000 if the community would match
it. So far, roughly $5,000 has been generated through fundraisers
and donations. The City Council offered to chip in $20,000 as well.

That's a total of $95,000, meaning there's only $55,000 to go before
reaching the $150,000 match amount, according to The Daily News'
calculations. The Kelso City Council has allocated up to $17,000 to hire
grantwriter Anne O'Connor, a consultant for the Longview consulting
firm On the Mark, to apply for funding for the skate park.

Kerins said O'Connor also will resubmit a grant application to the Tony
Hawk Foundation, which was established by professional skateboarder
Tony Hawk to help build public skate parks in low-income communities.

In February, Kelso officials learned the foundation had rejected its
application for $25,000 partly because the competition was fierce
and partly because Hawk didn't like Kelso's proposed skate park design.
Hawk suggested that instead of building two concrete bowls separated by
some stairs and railings, the city build just one bowl and add more
street-skating elements so the venue would appeal to skaters of all
skill levels.

The city may ask Grindline Skateparks, Inc., to revise the original plans
to conform to Hawk's suggestions, Kerins said, adding that he hopes
Grindline can "plug something else in" and not charge the city for the
design change. The Seattle-based design company created the two-bowl
design for $17,000 after meeting with Cowlitz County skateboarders in
2005 to find out what they wanted.

The skate park will be built at the corner of Minor Road
and Burcham Street, a site that's visible from Interstate 5.

Plan-Z skateboard shop owner Jeremy Hooper has held three
fundraisers this year that generated nearly $2,000. The last one
he did a few weeks ago at Three Rivers Mall turned out to be a
"flop" due to lack of advertising and raised a little more than
$100, Hooper said Friday.

He hopes to do another video premiere screening in Kelso soon with
some "huge names" from the skateboarding industry in attendance,
he said.

"I think we're getting within reach (of the $150,000).
I sort of lost a little bit of my steam," Hooper said.

*** Plans For New Skate Park In Yakima ***

YAKIMA, Wash -- 09/20/2007
New ideas were getting tossed aroung in a meeting with
area skaters and city recreation officials Thursday night.
The plan is to build a skatepark worth almost $300,000
in Yakima's Kiwanis Park.

Local skaters who attended the meeting say they are
excited about the contractor the city is looking at, Grindline.
They say the company is know internationally and could give
Yakima a lot of attention.

One might say, Yakima already has a skatepark
at Chesterly Park, why do we need another?

Apparently it is not liked by some skaters.

"A lot of people want the park because right now we don't have
a decent park, it may look nice but everything is messed up and
kids just don't like skating our park. It's just no built right, it wasn't
built by skaters and people just don't like to skate," said Danny
Houfek after the meeting Thursday.

City recreation leaders say once everything is made official
they expect to start building the park early next year and
have it completed by the summer.

*** Shimano Introduces 2008 Coasting Bikes ***

SUN NEWS ( Shimano ) -- 09/24/2007
In efforts to expand the market for casual cycling, Shimano,
the worlds leading manufacturer of bicycle components, today
announced that seven additional bicycle manufacturers will
produce bikes equipped with its Coasting components in 2008.

The 2008 Coasting line includes the following manufacturers:

Electra Bicycle Co.
Fuji Bikes
Giant Bicycle
Jamis Bicycles
K2 Bike

Phat Cycles
Raleigh Bicycles USA
Schwinn Bicycles
SUN Cycles
Trek Bikes

In 2003, Shimano teamed up with innovation and design firm IDEO to
develop the ideal casual biking experience. In 2007, this new biking
experience made its debut with Coasting bikes from three top bike
manufacturers, Giant, Raleigh, and Trek.

Coastings initial success among new and returning riders
attracted an additional seven manufacturers for 2008.

In the development of Coasting, Shimano and IDEO conducted research
about consumers bike riding experiences. The goal was to understand
what would motivate a non-cyclist to ride a bike. After interviewing and
observing U.S. non-cyclists, Shimano and IDEO found that most
consumers had fond memories of riding a bike as a child, and were
interested in riding a bike in the same way today just for fun.

This has been a groundbreaking year for Shimano and the cycling
industry were excited that were working together to motivate the
world of non-cyclists to join the Coasting experience, said Dave
Lawrence, Shimanos senior manager of product development and
marketing. With the combined efforts and successes of the Coasting
initiative so far, we anticipate that this expanded partnership will
continue our goal of growing the industry.

Based on the extensive research, Shimanos designers created a bicycle
component group that is simple, comfortable, affordable and easy to use.
The Coasting group is geared specifically for the rider who wants to coast
rather than climb. It features an automatically shifting 3-speed system
designed for casual riding, and includes a computer that shifts gears
as the rider increases or decreases the bikes speed.

The component group also includes a coaster brake, which allows
the rider to brake by pedaling backward rather than with a hand
brake lever. The automatic shifting technology is hidden, and the
experience is designed around the users needs.

About Coasting

Coasting is a casual bike experience for the millions of Americans who

effortlessly. By using a human-centered approach to the design and
determining the consumers needs, Shimano in partnership with 10
bicycle manufacturers developed the ideal bike that combines
automatic shifting with a stylish, simple design and function for
riders of any ability.

Each bike features Shimanos Coasting components.
The bikes are easy to ride, the technology is hidden,
and the experience is designed around the casual
users needs.

*** Skate Parks To Allow BMX Bikers ***

Monroe, MI --
Bikes soon will be able to share use of the
City of Monroe's two skateparks with skate
boarders and in-line skaters - but not at the
same time.

The city plans to put up signs explaining the new
policy, and new entryways will be created to
accommodate bikes better. However, bikes that
have axle pegs won't be allowed, city officials have
decided.

The issue had been raised by BMX bikers who
complained that they unfairly were being banished
from the skateparks at Munson Park and near the
Monroe Multi-Sports Complex.

The bikers began a dialogue about the matter on the
Monroe Talks discussion board (www.monroetalks.com),
and Councilman Brian Beneteau took note. Some of the
youth then appeared before city council two weeks ago
and argued their case.

After discussing the liability issues involved, the city agreed
Monday to change the policy. The city concluded that it
would have no additional liability if appropriate signs were
erected and bikers and skaters used the park separately.

Tentative plans are for bikers to be allowed at the
Munson skatepark four days a week and at the ice
arena three days a week on alternating days.

Bicycles with axle pegs will not be allowed due to the
potential greater damage to the ramps - a restriction
that probably won't please some of the bikers.

City Manager George Brown said it
was an acceptable accommodation.

"We hope this turns out to be nothing but a good decision,"
he said.

But Nora Young, a Conant Ave. resident, said she didn't
think bikes and skateboards should co-exist at the parks.

She said many of the bikers who use the skatepark near
the ice arena "smoke and cuss" and scare off the younger
kids who want to use the facility to skateboard.

"I don't understand why you don't want bikes downtown,
but you want them on a small area with 7- and 8-year-olds,"
she told the city council Monday night. "Younger children see
those bikers and they leave."

She said some of the bikers use foul language.

"It's like they're getting paid to cuss," she said.

But Will Maloche, a BMX biker,
said that's not the group he hangs out with.

"We don't smoke and we don't cuss," he said.

Mayor C.D. (Al) Cappuccilli told Mr. Maloche to spread
word that misbehavior at the skateparks "will ruin it for everyone."

*** Council Gets $5,000 From Skateboarders ***

Willcox, AZ --
The Willcox Skate Park Committee presented the
City of Willcox with a check for $5,000 earlier this
month.

Committee Chairman Mitchell Rios introduced
"the core of the Skate Park Committee kids" Justin
Castro, Noah Van Haren, Wesley Schofield, and
Elijah Sheppard.

Each expressed his view that if a skate park were built
in Willcox, it would lessen drug abuse by keeping kids
busy, focused on school, and help keep kids off the
streets and away from alcohol and methamphetamine.

They said a skate park would benefit the city by keeping
kids from doing illegal things, such as vandalizing businesses
or school property.

A skate park would bring other people into town to
spend money in Willcox by buying gas, food, or even
staying overnight in a motel.

The boys pointed out that there are many young skaters
who are the future of skateboarding and want a skate park
as much as the older ones do.

"The little skaters need a place to skate so that they
do not get in trouble and they can skate safely."

Seven-year-old Elijah Sheppard, who has been skating
for almost a year, read a statement to the council and
presented his drawing of what he wants the Willcox
skate park to look like.

"I like to skate because it is fun to learn tricks, and I get to
hang out with the big guys. Maybe someday I'll be a
professional skater," said Sheppard, adding that to achieve
that goal he needs to practice, but has nowhere to practice
in Willcox "because I get into trouble skating on sidewalks."

"The Skate Park Committee has money to give to the city
to start building a skate park," he said. "If you get stuck,
ask us for help."

Mitchell Rios told the council that the committee has done
"a lot of work and met many of the criteria" set forth by
the council.

"We were asked by the mayor and council to form a
committee and it has been formed," he said. "We have
been in existence over a year and have raised some
money. What is holding us back right now is grant
assistance because we do not have a 501(c3)."

Rios said he contacted several cities and was told, "not
one child worked and raised money for their skate park.
I found that 100 percent of the funding came from one
person with help from the city managers."

He then asked City Manager Mike Leighton for assistance
in getting a grant application underway and finalized.

Leighton replied that he has no personal objection,
but that it is up to the mayor and council for their approval.

"I work for them," he added.

Councilman Robert Sherwood commented that last week
at the Arizona League of Cities and Towns Conference there
were some 50 youth committees from different cities
throughout Arizona.

"I asked them about skate parks in their communities,
and they said the most successful parks built were the
ones where the kids earned it," said Sherwood, adding
that those who did not earn it "lost their skate park to
vandalism and drugs."

After the check presentation, Councilwoman Monika
Cronberg commended the members of the committee
for all their work, knowing how hard it is to do.

"When something is earned it is truly valuable,"
she said.

Cronberg said she is concerned that this has been a
"talking point" with the council for more than a year now.

"They were directed to go back and raise more money.
How many will stay if they only accomplish one thing?"
she said. "What do we have to do to take the first step?"

Cronberg said she is concerned about citizens in
need having their needs addressed by the council.

"They are young and have goals to be professional
skaters and without a place to skate, they cannot
proceed," said Cronberg, adding that another community
concern is a Senior Center.

"I am voicing my frustration because part of it has been
accomplished and as a city, we need to take step one to
do what we have to do," she said. "The committee has
worked in good faith, so we need to do that and work
on step two and so on."

Councilman Jimmy Norris asked if the committee has gone
to local businesses for help, to which Rios replied that he
went business-to-business with a letter about a year ago,
and that some have been generous and donated to this cause.

"We have not re-addressed that and are working as
our next goal to re-address the businesses," Rios said.

Councilman Phil Stratton said he has
supported the skate park from the beginning.

He suggested the city give the committee a letter for the
funds they have raised, with which they could go to
businesses and say the city is supporting them.

Stratton said he has had interaction with kids in the past,
chastising them for where they were skating, but also
encouraging them not to lose their enthusiasm.

"I know some that are still skating in their 30s and 40s,"
he said.

Sherwood asked about the cost for the cement slab.

"They have shown they are serious with the $5,000
donation, and we need to show we are serious as
well and back them," he said.

Dave Bonner, director of public service and works,
said he didn't remember the exact figures.

Cronberg added that several months ago it was
$8,000, and now the cost has "probably increased."

Rios replied that last November the estimate from a
local vendor was just under $15,000 for a 4,000 psi
90 x 40-foot slab with eight-inch footers.

Former Public Works Director Ryan Benavides suggested
stronger psi for longevity, but Rios believes that a four-inch
slab would still sustain through wear and tear and would be
priced just over $10,000.

Vice Mayor Rodriguez asked what area they are considering,
and Bonner replied it is the southeast parking lot or west of
the pool.

Rodriguez asked if the staff could get an estimate.

Bonner then asked Rios if they had a contractor,
and Rios replied that it is "just materials."

Bonner said he is assuming that city employees
would finish the work, and it is a large area.

"This is not something they can take on
over the next couple of months," he added.

Cronberg said she understood that, but hoped that the
city could establish a date, have another skatepark
demonstration and some fundraisers "and work together
for a senior center, too."

Mayor Woody Johnson thanked Rios and the skaters for
their presentation, and for stepping forward and putting in
all the hours and work they have put into it.

"It is not just a vision, it is a quality of life issue and
I think this council wants to see it through," he said.

*** Race Is On For The 2016 Olympics ***

New York, NY --
It's that time again: Cities around the world have
begun the biannual process of promising the greatest
show on earth to the voting members of the International
Olympic Committee.

They'll hope that the pandering and the commitment of
spending boatloads of taxpayers' dollars will pay off and
they will be selected as the host city for the Olympics.

Last Friday, the committee announced that seven cities
have submitted an application to host the 2016 Olympic
Games. Baku, Azerbaijan; Chicago; Doha, Qatar; Madrid;
Prague, Czech Republic; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Tokyo
will all "officially" enter the Olympics race first heat on October
1. That is when the bidding cities find out just how much real
support they have from their local governments — which is a
key component to an Olympic bid.

The IOC itself can figure out how much real support a
bidding city has through a questionnaire, or "mini bid-book,"
which has to be completed and turned in on January 14, 2008.

The mini bid-book will give the bidders a chance to explain
if they have what it takes to run a 17-day sports festival.

What the IOC is looking for is pretty simple: How much
money will local and national governments spend on facilities,
how much television and Internet money will be available, and
how much corporate support can be counted upon so that the
Games can go on? On June 8, 2008, the IOC will cut the list of
candidates based on the mini bidbooks.

Those running in the second heat will adjust money figures
and show the IOC that their local governments are prepared
to spend to the max in an effort to get the Games. The rationale
behind the bids will be simple: We will show off our city to the
world, make our city a tourist destination, and while we are
building all sorts of new sports venues, we will work on urban
renewal.

What the bid cities will ignore, though, is that hosting a
Summer Olympics drains local governments of money
and forces all sorts of hikes in various taxes to pay for
the sporting contests. Residents of Montreal — and the
rest of Quebec — finished paying off all the debt associated
with the 1976 Montreal Summer Games — in 2006.

Australia is paying hundreds of millions of dollars annually
on upkeep of unused stadiums and arenas that were built for
the 2000 Games in Sydney. Greece is also paying off billions
of dollars of debt after hosting the 2004 Summer Games in Athens.

Despite that, the mini bid-books will be filled with all sorts
of projections from product licensing, and local and national
government grants that will be generated by tourists not only
attending the Olympics but by visitors who will go to the
country because it is an Olympic city.

All the facts and figures from the bidding cities will be
available in a complete bid dossier that has to be submitted
on January 14, 2009. On September 9, 2009, the IOC will
give its opinion, and that is when the sprint to the finish starts.

The bidders will have about a month to fix up their bids, and
then hope their number is called on October 2, 2009, in
Copenhagen, Denmark, when IOC members vote on the
city they judge to have met all the criteria — the most money
on the barrelhead is thought of as the chief component — to
host the Games.

So, the race has started. Baku, Prague, and Rio de Janeiro
seem to be the three most likely to not survive the first heat:
Rio de Janeiro had submitted a bid for the 2012 Games, but
was eliminated after the first heat.

The Brazilian government, though, has promised to cover
any financial shortfall that might be incurred by the local
Olympic Committee's finances this time around — music
to the ears of IOC delegates. The IOC has never shied
away from sticking local taxpayers with bills that pay for
new or renovated stadiums.

Baku has to be considered a long shot. In July, the chairman
of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan, Chingiz
Huseynzade, said the cost of hosting the 2016 Summer Olympic
Games might be $20 billion. That is a 2007 estimate, but the real
cost could be billions more — as Athens found out.

The Prague committee has given all the usual answers as to
why it should host the 2016 Games. According to Tomas
Petera, the director of the Praha Olympijska, the bid "would
be a contribution to the country regarding the completion of
its infrastructure, the improvement of its lifestyle, the promotion
of Prague, and the entire country in the world, and enhancing
the importance of sport."

No word, though, on how Prague plans to pay off the billions
meant to improve the lifestyle of Czechs due to the Olympics.

Tokyo last hosted the Summer Olympics in 1964.
Its bid committee has brought the following message
to the IOC: The governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara,
was quoted as saying that hosting the Olympics "is a
national project, which will leave tangible and intangible
fortunes to Japanese citizens.

We will make the utmost effort for a successful bid."
Japan's government will pay up to half the building costs.

Doha is an interesting bidder. Money would seem to be
no problem because of oil business. But Qatar is located
on the Arabian Peninsula, and has been a staging point for
American forces in the Middle East. Climate is another problem,
as Qatar is a desert. Qatar plans to release information about its
Olympic plans in October.

Madrid is taking another kick at the can. Two years ago,
Madrid finished behind London and Paris in the 5-country
race to get the 2012 Summer Games. London won the bid
by pushing an international marketing campaign.

Madrid appears to have learned a lesson from its failure.
The City Council of Madrid has paid $2.4 million to Spanish
Olympic Federations, in exchange for the Federations support
to promote the Madrid 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games
bids. The Federations also agreed to help with the mini bid-book
development and promote the project with the International
Olympic Committee and International Federations.

Chicago will be in the race until the last day, because
American dollars fuel the Olympics in terms of TV.

American companies such as McDonald's and Coca-Cola
spend much money on the Games as well. But Chicago has
a big problem right now: It doesn't have an Olympic stadium,
and is planning a temporary venue that would be used just for
the 2016 Games.

The Chicago Olympic Bid Web site has a list of 16 reasons
as to why Chicago should host the Games. It's the usual pap
that includes "Unite the World," "Celebrate Our Love of Sport,"
— and then comes the reasons dealing with money.

Items 5–9 state that the Olympics will act as a "Catalyst for
Wide Spread Urban Development," will "Generate Economic
Benefits Before the Games," will "Generate Economic Benefits
During the Games," will "Generate Economic Benefits After the
Games," and will promote "Accelerated Planned Infrastructure
Improvements."

These are old arguments that, as economists point out, don't
hold water. There is very little evidence that any of these
promises held up in either Los Angeles (the home of the
1984 Games) or Atlanta (which hosted the 1996 Summer
Olympics) or anywhere else.

The race begins now. In the end, it will come down to who
wants to spend the most for two weeks' worth of sports glory.

*** BMX Riders Vow To Protect Track ***

Peterborough, UK --
BMX riders were left reeling this morning after
discovering diggers had ploughed through their
beloved track in Stanground.

Horrified riders – some of who had spent 11 years
building the site in Stanground, Peterborough – were
mortified to find a giant gouge had been levelled
through a series of jumps.

They say the track has become a haven for BMX
enthusiasts, with many coming from places as far
away as Cambridge, Ipswich and London to use it.

It is based in woodland near warehousing
units off the Fletton Parkway, in Stanground.

They are now vowing to stand in the way of the
diggers if work continues to prevent them from
causing any more damage.

BMX rider Barry Christie said: "The track is
out of the way and is like a sanctuary for us.

"We don't want to have to use a track built in the
middle of a housing estate where children can throw
bricks at us.

"We will stand in the way of the diggers.

"People come from all over to use this track."

He said he was unsure as to why the diggers were
at the site, but one theory was that it may be connected
with building work associated with a Stanground bypass.

Sam Moreland (26), from Stanground,
was left gutted after discovering the damage.

He began digging out mounds – or jumps – about 11
years ago, but today was left shocked after discovering
years of work had been damaged in one swoop.

He said: "They have damaged a few key lines and
jumps. I have been building this for 11 years now.

"For me BMX riding is a passion, but it
is also more than that, it is a way of life.

"I don't know what I would be doing if it wasn't for this."

The site is hidden away behind some trees
and consists of around six to seven jumps.

Riders claim about 40 people use it on a regular basis.

The BMX riders are now calling for Peterborough
City Council to provide them with a new facility.

It is unclear at this stage exactly who the diggers belong to.

*** BMX Biker Could Be Olympic Star ***

Wigan, UK --
Competition at the Olympics could be more than just
a dream for one Wigan youngster after an astonishing
display in a national championship.

BMX starlet Jacob Roberts had already bagged all the
trophies available to him this season, and followed up his
success with a dominating ride at the British Championships,
leading the race from start to finish.

And his run of top form has already set tongues wagging
about medal prospects for the London Olympics in 2012.

BMX makes its Olympic debut in Beijing, China, next year
, which is a little soon for 12-year old Jacob, from Ashton.

But when London comes around he'll be 17, and sponsors
are already queuing up to be associated with him.

His latest sponsorship deal is with clothing company Vans.

His mum Diane Sutton said there was barely room in
the car for the trophies after the Cantsfield High pupil
added the British Championships, held in Burnham-on-Sea,
Somerset, to the National Series he had already won.

She added: "It was a fantastic ride and he
beat boys who were much bigger than him.

"He's achieved so much already but I think his focus
now is on the Olympics. "He gets teased for the dedication
he shows to his riding, but it's really starting to pay off now."

Diane said Jacob had already been approached by
representatives from the Olympic Talent Team who
see him as a potential medal hope for London.

He has been inspired by the successes of fellow biking
talent Shanaze Reade who has three World, eight European
and five British BMX championships at junior levels.

Diane said: "Jake has ridden with Shanaze and she's
an example of what he could achieve. She's a real gold
medal hope for next year's Olympics and has done it all
at the junior levels.

"I think Jake's got it in him to go all the way.
The season's finished until next April now so
it's more up to him to keep up with his training,
and he's really determined to do it.

"He's probably got about 25 trophies now.
There's no room for them in the house, they'll
have to go in the attic."

Jacob is a member of the Mid-Lancs BMX club,
which meets at Coppull, near Chorley.

The club also boasts three other national champions
– Jack Clarke, Paddy Sharrock and Mike Pardon.

PORTAGE, IN --
Organizers of the non-profit Steel Wheels BMX
can show plenty of examples of youth who are living

Two of those young people include Portage
residents Danny Roach and Liam Wright.

Danny, 13, said his goal is "to become a professional BMXer."

Liam is a boy of few words, but has boundless energy.
The two-year-old will celebrate his third birthday in October.
Both boys participated in qualifying and finals at the American
Bicycle Association State Championship.

Both gained valuable points, and in Danny's case, two
first place finishes in the major event last month at
Imagination Glen Outdoor in Portage.

A seventh-grader at Willowcreek Middle School who
plays drums for the school band, Danny has the inside
track on the Glen's riding surface. He knows it well
because he has been competing there since the facility
was christened in 2000.

He brought his six years experience racing as an expert
-amateur to the recent triple-point series and garnered a
state championship and a first-place finish in the cruiser
class, both for 13-year-olds. He was going up against
more than 150 riders.

Being labeled an expert when a child is just 13 might bring
out over-confidence in some -- and an awkward family
dynamic; Danny recalls his latest accomplishments, though,
in the same way he states his goals in a friendly, matter-of-
fact manner.

"On my last event race, I came out of the gate, I was in first,
and I stayed in first," said Danny, dressed in his Zim's Bicycle
Shop gear. "I got passed by in the second turn ... and the last
turn, I ended up passing him again, and got first in my cruiser class."

Riding behind his No. 2 plate, Danny did not place first in
every race. In a second place finish, he said he "got crashed"
on a berm.

The road warrior, who is looking ahead to fall ABA
competitions, said riders have to just get up and finish
if they wreck. He said he will be reminded of his BMX
battles by the scars that freckle parts of his arms and legs.

Danny travels extensively with his supportive parents.
He said he has been to 10 national ABA competitions
this year. At Portage, his brother Mitchell Roach took
a first place finish in the State Championship series in
the 11-year-old class.

The Roach brothers received trophies and racing-inspired
backpacks. Danny explained that his room is "lined with
trophies," not counting the boxes filled with awards in his
closet and in the family's attic.

When Liam is not riding his micro-mini 20-inch bike,
competing in the under-5, novice class, he's likely to
be seen within an ear shot of his father, Eric Wright,
now 30, who raced at Imagination Glen Outdoor when
he was in his 20s.

Parents and onlookers watched Liam, who sat near a dirt
berm and playfully pitched Hot Wheels vehicles at other kids.

Liam is the youngest ABA rider in the U.S. When he competes,
he is normally matched with kids who are at least a year older.

He pedaled -- without training wheels -- and added a fourth
place finish to the distinction of having the second highest district
points total in the under-5 age group.

His brother Jared Wright, 7, leads Indiana
boys riders in district points accumulated.

The "track baby" gained a lot of attention at a recent
ABA event in Minnesota, which was the first time he
rode in a National competition, according to his mother,
Danielle Wright.

"(Liam) could race a bike, but he couldn't say 'BMX',"
Danielle said. "When we left there, we taught him to say 'BMX'."

*** Getting A Jump On BMX Success ***

Auburn, CA --
At 4 years old many children are
just learning to ride a two-wheeler bike.

But when Alden Volle was only 3 ½ years old he not
only was proficient without training wheels on a two-
wheeler but also rode a small motorcycle around the
family's 5-acre home in Penryn.

Today at 11 years old, the Forest Lake Christian School
student is ranked No. 1 in the world for his age group
from the BMX World Championship competition held
in Victoria, B.C. in July.

"When Alden was 5 ½ we went to a BMX race in Reno,"
said Alden's mother, Teri. "We bought a BMX bike right there."

Teri recalls that within 10 minutes of purchasing the bike,
Alden entered his first race, a qualifier. That same day he
made it to the main event race and placed fifth out of 65 kids.

In a BMX race the course is 1,500 feet long. Competitors
try to exit the eight-person gate, careening through several
hills, obstacles, turns and jumps on a single-gear BMX bike
in the fastest time.

According to Alden, BMX bikes are extremely lightweight,
being built with titanium and carbon fibers and the wheels
are much more narrow than an ordinary bicycle. BMX
racers usually build their bikes, part by part, although
some entry-level models can be purchased in stores.

From that first race six years ago,
Alden knew he would continue competing.

"That first race felt great," Alden said.
"I wanted to keep going."

Alden said after his race in Reno he pushed his parents
into taking him to the track at Oak Creek in Roseville.

Today Alden races in the expert division where he
competes on two national factory teams - the American
Bicycle Association, Staats Challenge and the National
Bicycle Team, Dan's Comp.

Although Alden concentrates on BMX nine months
of the year, for the last four years during the fall he
devotes his athletic abilities to the Junior Eagles foot
ball team. Alden feels his time with football doesn't
hinder his BMX training as both sports work on
strength, agility and foot speed.

"I like the glory of being on the football team," Alden said.
"I like the camaraderie, and I've made a lot of friends."
When the football season ends in a few months Alden will
continue to train with T.J. Johnson, his BMX coach who
believes Alden has exceptional athletic abilities.

"Alden loves to try everything," Johnson said.
"He is very coachable, you tell him how to do
something one time and he does it. He's very
physically advanced.

Johnson said from January through August of each year
he works with Alden at the Roseville track a few days
each week perfecting his jumps and working on conditioning.

For Alden, being a good BMX competitor not only
requires strength and endurance but also discipline,
focus and mental confidence. He also attributes his
success to his parents.

"They are strict," he said. "They know I need
to train. I work on sprints with both my mom
and dad."

His parents also work with him at home on
the four-person gate they built at their home.

"Eighty percent of a BMX race is getting
out of the gate fast," Teri said. "It's aggressive."

Being the world champion BMX rider requires not
only lots of practice on the local tracks but extensive
travel as well. Alden and his family travel several week
ends each year throughout the season and have been to
almost every state in the country as well as the World
Championships in Victoria, B.C.

As for the future, Alden thinks he might try mountain
biking as many colleges offer this type of competitive
team. He's also looking at the 2010 Olympics where
BMX racing will be a sport for the first time.

Teri said she's enjoyed the time she has spent on the
tracks. It has allowed the family to spend time together
as they often travel in their motor home to many of the
races and Alden's 16-year-old sister also participates
in BMX racing.

Although Alden said being a world champion is a great
feeling, his mother believes her son is humble with all he's
achieved.

"He takes it all in stride. If he loses a race, he is hard on
himself and always tries to think of what he'll do in the
next race to do better," she said. "I'm proud of all his wins,
but more important is when someone at one of the races
tells me what a good kid he is."

*** BMX Track Reopens In Simpsonville ***

Simpsonville, SC --
A broken hip hasn't stopped longtime BMX
racer Donnie Ballew. The 66-year-old shook
off the injury from seven weeks ago to last month
place third and then first in a national bicycling
competition in Delaware.

Ballew didn't look any less pleased he was one of
only three in the competition's 56 and older division
when asked about the achievement during last week's
reopening of a state-of-the-art BMX track at Simpsonville's
Southside Park.

The new $80,000 track was officially reopened through
partnership between the Greenville County Recreation District,
the newly formed South Carolina BMX Association and the
American Bicycle Association.

The track is the largest in the Southeast, according to
Raymond Dunham, the recreation district's special use
facility director. It's 1,010 linear feet in length with a
17-foot high burm on the first turn. More than 4000 yards
of new clay were added to the track, which boasts an
expert section with a 30-foot jump.

"This track is on the same scale of the Grand Nationals
and Olympic venue size facilities," Dunham said, adding
the Redline Cup East Finals were to be hosted at the track
over the weekend. "This event is great not only for the
participants but also for our local community having an
estimated impact of $150,000."

Ballew, a single dad since his two children were both less
than 2, first started managing Simpsonville's track not due
to any expertise in the sport. Instead, his 14-year-old son
Kevin, now 27, volunteered him.

"Kevin kept coming here and playing on the track even
though it was full of potholes and there was no track director.
From what I understand Kevin said, `Well, my dad can do it,'"
laughed Warren Baker, SC BMX president.

Kevin and his sister Casey, 26, don't race anymore.
Since retiring from Mt. Vernon Mills after 29 years of
service, Ballew said racing and helping area children
grow in the sport has become his life.

"They learn how to win. They learn how to lose.
They learn how to get along with each other and how
to compete with each other," Ballew said. "You wouldn't
believe how the kids and teenagers talk to each other about
how to do better. It's just a pleasing situation to see the kids
get a long and work with each other and how they can better
themselves racing."

Ballew has raced 11 of the 15 years he's managed the
track. He is ranked fifth in the nation and second in the
state in his division. He oversees all operations at his home
track including practice 6-8 Thursdays and racing every
Friday night with registration 6:30-7:30 p.m.

All gathered last week to dedicate the track credited his
dedication and determination with making the facility –
named Donnie Ballew's Ultimate BMX Racing in his honor
— a reality.

"We were about ready to drop off the map as far as ABA
in South Carolina was concerned. We as an association
couldn't be prouder to have someone like him," ABA
President John Clayton said.

"Three years ago during banquet I told the kids I planned to
build them a track they could enjoy," Ballew said tearfully
Thursday before proclaiming the track officially open. "This
is y'alls track."

*** NBL 2008 National Classes Point Structure ***

Hilliard, Ohio ( NBL BMX News ) --
The National Bicycle League (NBL) announces several
exciting modifications to the National class and point
structure for the 2008 National BMX Racing season.

In response to the demand for a competitive 20" class
for the 40-somethings, the NBL introduces a 41 & Over
Novice and 41 & Over Expert class. A growing number
of riders who raced in the late 70's to early 90's have
been returning to their BMX roots and the NBL has
responded to the need for a competitive bracket for
these veterans of BMX.

"There's a large group of riders between the ages of
35-39 who will be filling up these classes and we expect
the Expert group to be very competitive at the National
level," said Bob Tedesco, NBL Managing Director.

NBL continues to fully support the 30+ Masters class
and future plans may even call for a 40+ Masters class.
In the meantime, NBL plans to honor the past-champions
of BMX by offering a `BMX Legends' Open class at one
of the 2008 Nationals.

The NBL has made additional modifications to the amateur
novice and expert groups including the over-populated 17-24
class. The new class structure will provide a more balanced
level of competition for all of the new groups. No changes were
made to the younger age groups.

The modified classes are as follows:
• Novice; 17-18, 19-25, 26-34, 35-40, 41 & Over
• Expert; 17-18, 19-25, 26-34, 35-40, 41 & Over

One minor adjustment was made to the Cruiser classes
– the 50 & Over class will be offered at all local and National
events and a 55 & Over Cruiser class will offered at the
President's Cup and the Grand National exclusively.
View the 2008 classes here.
http://www.nbl.org/rulebook.html?S2XEvent=ViewChapter&ChapterId=10

The NBL Elite Series, also known as the Road to Glory
Series, has always been the premier Pro level of racing in
the USA and for 2008, NBL will bring back the 17 & Over
age requirement for both the Elite Men and Elite Women's
classes. The UCI Continental Series featuring Elite and Junior
classes will now be run independently..

NBL will no longer offer the UCI-based Junior Men or
Women's 20" class and will retire both Elite Series Cruiser
classes to focus more attention on the 20" groups.

"The NBL Elite Series has always been popular with the
athletes so we are investing more resources into the 20"
classes to make them more competitive and ultimately,
more lucrative" added Bob Tedesco.

Additionally, the 16-29 and 30 & over Money Open classes
will offer payouts exclusively at the Christmas Classic and NBL
Grands. At all other national events, these classes will be run for
regular awards of the day.

http://www.nbl.org/rulebook.html?S2XEvent=ViewChapter&ChapterId=10

The new National point structure, which essentially
combines the '06 and '07 tables, promises to increase
competition in the motos while providing large enough
increments in the mains to allow riders the chance to
move up rankings with good overall finishes. The new
system will tighten the national points chase in all classes
and reward riders who place well in the main events,
which will ultimately add even more excitement to the
2008 NBL Grand National.

Click here to view the 2008 points chart.
http://www.nbl.org/rulebook.html?S2XEvent=ViewChapter&ChapterId=12

The new class and point structure will take effect starting
with the Supercross National at Camp Woodward East.
The Supercross National and the Northeast Regional
Championship will be held at Camp Woodward East in Pa.,
from September 29-30. Get ready for an exciting year of
NBL National racing!

to the Yahoo! Group and post or go out to everyone.
But it will in-take and send news messages via the web
base page.Yahoo! Groups is making it to hard to jump
all of the hoops just to post Daily BMX News to everyone.

So, with all the difficulties arising via Yahoo! Groups
Gene`s BMX will be posting ALL BMX - Bicycling
News Daily at the Pacific Northwest BMX Forums.
