Six bicycle groups have been awarded 2002 IMBA/Clif Bar Trail
Preservation Grants. The $500 grants - the latest in a series of
Clif Bar-sponsored IMBA grants that began last year -

promote environmental education, and inspire conservation
in the mountain bicycling community.

Methow Valley Sports Association of Winthrop, WA
was recently selected to receive a grant from IMBA/Clif Bar
for the construction of 12-15 interpretive trail signs that will
educate users about trail access issues, wildlife habitat and
conservation needs.

Past grant-winning projects include the construction of interpretive
trail signage, riparian habitat restoration, environmental education
materials, and kids mountain bike projects.

Clif Bar Inc.'s investment in trail preservation will continue later this year,
when Clif and IMBA team to award six more grants. The application
deadline for the next round is July 1 and recipients will be announced
on July 15. For more information please visit

*** Type 20 Hires General Manager, Plans Clothing Launch ***

SAN CLEMENTE, CA. 05/01/2002
Briko's parent company, Type 20, hired Mike Ryberg as U.S.
subsidiary general manager. The move is part of the Italian
company's push to expand its U.S. business beyond helmets,
sunglasses and goggles and into cycling and outdoor apparel.

Ryberg previously worked for baseball card maker Upper Deck,
where he served as authentication division general manager.

Briko has sold apparel in Europe for five years, but the U.S.
cycling industry will get its first peak at the technical apparel
this year at Interbike.

Briko's Katana line of high-end cycling apparel will be one of
several lines offered in the United States. Pieces in the line use
Gore Windstopper, Gore Tex, Cool Max and Tactel.

Many of Briko's apparel lines, however, are designed for multi-sport
use.
"The crossover market is the key. People are not willing to buy a
specific
garment anymore," said Paola Del Vecchio, Type 20's owner.

Del Vecchio said the addition of Briko apparel, combined with
Type 20's marketing investment in the U.S. market, could double
the company's 2001 U.S. sales of $3 million.

Type 20 is also the exclusive U.S. distributor
of Arnette products.

*** SRAM To Move RockShox Assembly To Taiwan ***

CHICAGO, IL. 05/01/2002
SRAM will move all assembly of RockShox forks
to Taiwan starting with 2004 model-year products.
Among reasons for the move, SRAM cited an eroding
U.S. customer base, deteriorating fork prices and the
proliferation of competition.

SRAM has yet to decide whether RockShox assembly
will be moved to its Taiwanese factories, current RockShox
assemblers in Taiwan or another party.

RockShox' design, engineering and testing teams will
remain in Colorado Springs, Colorado, but will likely
move to a new office sometime next year. SRAM
expects to grow this department and add additional
mountain bike components to the RockShox line.

SRAM will continue to use existing U.S. RockShox
suppliers and supply-chain management will remain in
Colorado Springs though model year 2003. SRAM
expects to begin working on 2004 product next spring.

"As we analyze the long-term competitive strength of RockShox
manufacturing in Colorado Springs there are substantial
concerns with cost structure, profitability and proximity
to the customer base. Therefore, we are making the difficult
decision that Colorado Spring's assembly will move to Taiwan
for the 2004 model year," Stan Day, SRAM's president said
in a statement.

SRAM is creating a transition team charged with moving assembly
operations to Taiwan. The team will include engineers and
manufacturing personnel from Colorado Springs as well as
employees from Taiwan.

*** Teen driver also charged in road assault on pastor ***

Seattle , Washington 03/30/2002
King County prosecutors said they would
seek an exceptional sentence against the
Issaquah boy who allegedly leaned out of
a car last month and pushed a Bellevue
pastor off his bike.

But the girl who was driving the
car might face a stiffer penalty.

The 17-year-old Issaquah girl who police
say pulled up alongside the Rev. David Tinney
on March 25 and watched her friend push him
to the pavement has been charged with felony
hit-and-run driving as well as second-degree
assault, authorities said yesterday.

The 17-year-old Issaquah boy who allegedly pushed Tinney
was charged earlier this month with second-degree assault.
He is a student at Tiger Mountain Community High School.

The two are not being named because they are minors.
Both are facing prosecution as juveniles.

King County sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Greg Dymerski said
the driver was culpable because she slowed down and got
close enough to Tinney — about a foot away — to allow
the pastor to be pushed.

The driver "made no attempt to stop her vehicle and render
help to Tinney," according to a detective's affidavit. "She said
she did not stop to help Tinney because the occupants in her
vehicle told her not to stop."

Tinney, who was traveling about 30 mph when he was pushed,
is still recovering from the fall, which left him with five broken ribs,

a broken collarbone, a fractured elbow and a partly collapsed lung.

In November 2000, the teenage driver was incarcerated at
Echo Glen Children's Center in Snoqualmie for an unrelated offense,
according to records with the Issaquah School District.
The state-run detention facility contains a school that is
operated by the district.

The standard sentence for second-degree assault for a
juvenile is 15 to 36 weeks in detention. In the case of the boy,
King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng said he would ask for
a longer sentence because of the "cruel nature of the crime and
the vulnerability of the victim."

Felony hit-and-run driving for a juvenile carries maximum penalties
of 30 days in jail, a year of community supervision, 150 hours of
community service and a $500 fine.

Tinney, 51, a pastor at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Bellevue,
was training for the Seattle-to-Portland bicycle ride and was on the
shoulder at Southeast Newport Way and 164th Avenue Southeast when
the car sped up beside him. According to police, the boy leaned out of
the
front passenger-seat window and "punched Tinney in the back while
screaming at him."

Tinney was thrown over his handle bars.

A witness wrote down the license plate and called 911.
The teens were found in an Issaquah restaurant later that day.

*** NORBA Announcs Changes To National Championship Series ***

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO.04/30/2002
NORBA made three changes to the 2002
National Championship Mountain Bike Series,
including honoring BMX National Bicycle League licenses
for dual slalom and mountain cross racing, counting all five
series races toward final standings and having a national dual
slalom title decided in a single race on May 11 at Big Bear.

The five-race NORBA series had used the best of four results
to determine national champions for all disciplines.
The Union Cycliste Internationale's (UCI)
decision to phase out the dual slalom and introduce mountain
cross influenced NORBA's decision, said Eric Moore,
USA Cycling national events manager.

The mountain cross national title will be awarded based
on results over the four remaining NORBA nationals.

At the Sea Otter Classic, riders with pro National Bicycle League
licenses
were allowed to race the dual slalom and mountain cross events.
This will be allowed throughout the NORBA series
"We want to lower the entry barriers to our sport," Moore said.

This year all five NORBA national events will count toward the
overall series and the national championships. In previous years,
athletes discarded their lowest result.

*** K2 First Quarter Net Income Increases 22 Percent ***

VASHON ISLAND, WA. 04/30/2002
K2 increased its first-quarter net income 22 percent,
from $3.2 million in the first quarter last year to $3.8 million this
year.
Sales for the quarter, however, dropped $24 million, from $173.2
million to $148.7 million due to slow sales of inline skates and
scooters.

The bike division grew 14 percent in the quarter, but the company
made its strongest gains in the fishing tackle and water sports
businesses,
which each posted record first-quarter sales and earnings.
Even with depressed sales, K2's inline skate division also returned to
profitability in the quarter.

Sales of skis and snowboards slowed in the quarter,
reflecting unfavorable snow conditions, which brought
sales down across the wintersport industry.

Richard Rodstein, K2's president, credits the increase
in net income to recent cost-cutting measures,
including moving nearly all production from its
headquarters on Vashon Island to China.

K2 reduced expenses in the quarter by $8.1 million
compared to last year.

Wenatchee,Washington - 04/27/2002
Tarps and drop cloths draped colorful creations in the
Keyes Fibre Corp. Youth Parade early Saturday morning
as parade stalwarts prepared to kick off the first weekend
of the 83rd-annual Apple Blossom Festival.

"It's not going to rain on our parade!" said event
chairwoman Karen Wade.

Dark, drizzly skies loomed, and participants queuing up at
the Triangle Park staging area could only hope for a break
in the weather. By 10 a.m., they apparently got it. The wet
stuff stopped, and blue skies were seen to the west. The
forecast calls for cloudy and cool weather on Saturday and
warmer and sunnier on Sunday.

Heavy rain Friday evening shut down the Funtastic Shows
Carnival at Riverfront Park.

"Everything pretty much closed down at 9 p.m., and people
ran for cover," said Darci Waterman, festival executive
director.

Rain didn't faze Ashley Douglas, 8, of Wenatchee, who was
riding on the Apple-A-Day Care Center float in the Youth
Parade. "I don't care," she said. "I just want to do it."

"Who's this for?" Wade said. "It's for the kids, and they
don't care. They think it's another great adventure."

Indeed.

More than 100 entries and as many as 4,500 marching,
singing, dancing, tumbling and float-riding children were
expected to take part in the Youth Parade. Floats, bands,
dance groups and costumed kids in all sizes assembled in
Triangle Park. They were scheduled to begin heading down
Orondo Avenue at 11 a.m. From there, the parade travels
on Chelan Avenue to Fifth Street. At the end, every
participant was to get an ice cream bar.

"We've ordered 5,000 ice cream bars again this year, and
we usually run out," said Jodi Lowe, festival administrative
assistant.

Paul Pugh, founder and director of the Wenatchee Youth
Circus, was the parade's grand marshal. The Youth Circus
celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Pugh, 74, was
dressed in his Guppo the Clown outfit and was to ride in a
1999 Jaguar XK8.

Many of the parents, relatives and folks who were to line
the route had reserved seats by placing chairs and benches
in position along sidewalks days ago. Most of the seats will
remain in place for next Saturday's Grand Parade.

The Youth Parade kicks off Apple Blossom Festival
activities that continue throughout the coming week. The
Pepsi Cola Youth Day takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday in Memorial Park. Local dance groups and youth
musicians will provide entertainment on the park stage. Art
by children will be on display and booths will be set up for
face painting, rubber stamping and other hands-on activities
for children.

Entertainment continues all next week in Memorial Park.
The Funtastic Shows Carnival continues at Riverfront Park
and an arts and crafts fair begins Friday, also in Memorial
Park.

The festival's climax comes at 11 a.m. next Saturday with
the Albertsons and Washington Mutual Bank Grand
Parade. More than 100,000 people have been on hand for
the Grand Parade in past years.

PORTLAND, OR. 04/29/2002
After watching its revenues from bike parts decline,
Control Tech sold the division to Wei Hau,
the Taiwanese manufacturer of Pazzaz components and accessories.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Wei Hau moved Control Tech to Portland, Oregon,
where Brad Hughes will manage the company.
Hughes imports and markets the Pazzaz line,
along with Alex, FPD, Radius and Rush products.

Wei Hau renamed the brand Control Tech USA
to distinguish it from the Control Tech, which will
continue to manufacture products for the aerospace,
motorcycle and medical industries.
That group was not sold and will remain in Richland, Washington.

Control Tech USA's line includes high-end skewers, stems,
seatposts and bar ends. Hughes said that under Wei Hau,
Control Tech will focus on upper-end products for road
enthusiasts and add cold-forged parts for mountain bikes.
Hughes will unveil the new line at Interbike this fall.

This is sorta off topic from BMX,
But a hot topic/story in the Northwest,
and is being wached by lots, around the world,

ASSOCIATED PRESS
SEATTLE , WASHINGTON-- 04/26/2002
A man has pleaded innocent to second-degree murder
in the death of a man who was beaten over the head
with a skateboard during a confrontation in the
University District.

Timothy R. Strano, 22, of Seattle, arrested in
the death of Demetri Andrews, 33, of Renton,
a real estate agent and construction worker,
remained in jail with bail set at $750,000 after
entering the plea Thursday in
King County Superior Court.

Andrews died April 12, three days after a confrontation that
developed when two skateboarders suddenly blocked his
car at a busy intersection.

Prosecutors say Andrews got out of his car, argued with
the group and was pushed to the ground by one of the skateboarders,
Joseph M. Tremato, 32, of Seattle, then was hit over the head with a
skateboard by Strano as he tried to get up.

Tremato also was arrested but later was
released and has not been charged.

Strano, who moved to Seattle from New York four months ago,
has a criminal record that includes a felony burglary conviction
and misdemeanor convictions for petty larceny and malicious injury.

Man pleads not guilty in driver's death

By Seattle Times staff

A 22-year-old man accused in the fatal
beating of a Renton man with a skateboard
two weeks ago pleaded not guilty yesterday
to a charge of second-degree murder in
King County Superior Court.

Timothy R. Strano is charged in the death of Demetri Andrews, 33,
a real-estate agent and construction worker, who was involved in
an altercation with two men in the University District April 9.

The confrontation started when skateboarders blocked
Andrews' car at Northeast 45th Street and University
Way Northeast.

Prosecutors say that after Andrews got out of his car,
he was pushed to the ground by skateboarder
Joseph M. Tremato, 32, then struck over the head with
a skateboard by Strano as he was attempting to get up.
Andrews died three days later.

Tremato has not been charged.
Strano is being held on $750,000 bail.

*** Specialized Bicycle Announce Recall of Bicycles ***

WASHINGTON, D.C. 04/26/2002
In cooperation with the
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC),
Specialized Bicycle Components Inc., of Morgan Hill, Calif.,
is voluntarily recalling about 2,200 bicycles. The rear seatstays,
the tube behind the seat that connects the rear axle to the rear shock,
can break, possibly causing the rider to lose control and crash.

Specialized Bicycles has received 39 reports of the seatstays
on these bicycles breaking. No injuries have been reported.

The recall involves model year 2002 Enduro-brand bicycles.
The Enduro Pro FSR is silver; the Enduro Expert FSR is black;
the Enduro Comp FSR is yellow; and the Enduro FSR is blue.
The model name of the bicycles is located on the top tube
and the brand name is located on the down tube.

Authorized Specialized dealers nationwide sold these bicycles
from September 2001 through February 2002 for between
$1,650 and $2,750.

Consumers should stop riding these bicycles immediately,
and return them to their local Specialized dealer for a new
rear seatstay, which will be installed at no charge.
For more information, call Specialized at
(800) 214-1468 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT

*** InStep Recalls Children's Trailer Bikes ***

WASHINGTON, D.C. 04/26/2002
In Step is recalling about 4,300 children's
Hitchhiker III Trailer Bikes,
which are pulled behind adult bikes,
because the joints that attach them to the bicycles can fail.

The trailer bikes were sold at retail stores nationwide,
including Toys R Us, The Sports Authority and One Step Ahead,
from February to May 2001. They retailed for $80 to $110.

Failures at the universal joint have been reported 10 times,
and three people have been injured, according to the
Consumer Products Safety Commission.
The injuries were bruises and abrasions.
The trailer bikes have a single wheel and
are attached to bicycles by three bolts.

"We reviewed the hitch mechanism and we decided
it could be built better, and actually built a better one,
and that is why we are offering a new hitch,"
said Paul Kahmann, In Step's president.

The voluntary recall covers NH300 model trailer bikes
with the words "Hitchhiker III" printed in red on the trailer
arm and the In Step logo on the bottom tube and the safety flag.
Consumers and retailers can get a free repair kit by contacting
In Step at (800) 242-6110 or http://www.instep.net.

Fellow bike riders
THE SEASON IS HERE!!!!!
By now we should already have taken our
bikes of the storage pegs, cleaned and have
given that ride the tune-up it rightly derserves.

The most prestigous race around our neck of the woods,
Ridge to River Relay has had another successfull year.
With people from all walks of life and athletic abilities that
showed off their stuff to other racers, spectators and themselves.

It all comes down to having some fun while being in an competitive
environment. With the weather not even close to being perfect,
the posted times did not reflect the adversity.
Hats off to all participants!!!
Hope everybody had a GREAT time and had the FORCE with YOU!
Also, thanks to all the volunteers that make this race happen.

Afer the Ridge to River Relay race we have
the whole summer ahead to ride to our hearts content.
There are century rides, multi-century rides, road races, mountian
bike racing to participate in and to observe.
Round and Round Production will again have mountain bike racing
close to home. The Chelan Mt. Bike Festival at Chelan May 4-5th,
The Boneshaker at Winthrop May 18-19th and The Squilchucker
here in Wenatchee June 22-23rd. For more information on those
races and others, check out their web-site at
http://WWW.ROUNDANDROUND.COM.

Wenatchee Valley Velo's Twilight Criterium
is also one of those races coming up. Thanks
to Ed Farrar, the race on June 1st is shaping up
to even be bigger and better this year. One of our members,
Brian Grosshans, is making sure of that also. Brian has donated
a mountian bike frame for one of the prizes.
Thank you very much for the handsome spiff.

Don't be suprised next year to have an additional race on the
agenda to co-incite with the Twilight Criterium.
Just in the thought proccess, there could be a time
trials hill climb possibly on the Friday night before
the the criterium takes place. If that comes to life,
the Wenatchee Bike Weekend would have a times trial,
a century ride, the criterium and the road race at Leavenworth.
WOW!!! We now have a club logo.
Dan Kavet has spend sleepless nights working on this project.
We came up with a logo ( I'm taking some credit)
that will be seen on t-shirts by the time the Twilight Criterium rolls
around.
Maybe even sooner on our web-site
http://WWW.BIKEWENATCHEE.COM

Do you women members feel uncomfortable riding with the men?
Do you want a scheduled ride time that we can post on the web-site for
you?
Please let any of the club's officers know or come to the monthly
meeting the
first Thursday of each month. We can discuss the day, the time, ect. to
come
up with a happy medium so we can post and advertise it.

Hopefully soon the weather will break and we will finally have a spring
so that we can ride without all our cold weather gear on.
There are miles to be conquered, enjoy your freedom!

Your fellow biker,
Bouke Verkerk

Just a report from the Tulare National. Puget Sound BMX sent 5 people
to Tulare for the National. Cassie, Brittany, and Dan Bushnell,
Brittany Bates, and Keanu Corona. We met up with the Hillis family
who used to live up here and race for us and are planning on moving
back. There are rejoining our team. The track started out with a
roller and then a step-up then a double into the first corner that
most people could jump. Out of that corner was a larger set of
doubles and then some pedaling to a set of triples into the second
corner. Down the third straight was a step then a step up double and
down like the last obstacle in pasco then deep rollers and step into
a 90 degree around the back of the first turn with a table in the
middle and another 90 degree to three small but tall doubles to the
finish line. There were 309 motos on Saturday and 285 on Sunday.
Team wise for the Washington teams BMXTC took 2nd both days, Center
Cycle took 17 and 13th and Puget Sound took 10th and 9th. The
Northwest riders did real good, especially when you consider the home
track advantage the Californians had. Keanu took 3rd in open on
Sunday and Just missed getting out of semis both days. Brittany Bates
took a 3rd and 4th on Saturday (class and cru) and 1st and 3rd on
Sunday. Cassie Bushnell took 2nd and 3rd on Saturday and 1st and 4th
on Sunday. Dan Bushnell took 1st on Saturday and 2nd on Sunday. Carl
Hillis took 6 on Saturday and Terri Hillis took 3rd both days. The
rest were just barely out of the mains.
Other Northwest riders that did good were Jill Kitner was smoking in
Pro Girls but missed one of her mane motos on Saturday and still
ended up 2nd. Brent Lee was smoking all weekend. He just had to be
close when they got to the rythmm and then he would fly by anyone
there. Tasha Lefebre (sorry if I spelled it wrong) did real good all
weekend. Sydney Bayshore carried home a big 1st place trophy on
Sunday. There were others but I can't remember every one.

*** Skateboarders fly at this ... home of their own ***

By Eric Gordon Wenatchee World sports writer
http://www.wenworld.com
Wenatchee, Washington 04/23/2002

If you're heading out to the Wenatchee's Skate Park with a
scooter or bike, you'd better pack a lunch - it might be awhile.
Since skateboarders are running out of places to do their
ollies, nose grabs, kick flips, board slides, and Benny
Hannas, they are protective of their turf. Besides, isn't bike
riding supposed to be prohibited on the concrete course?

"I feel it should only be for skateboarders because we really
put in the time," said Mike Pottorf, 20.

Good point.

Pottorf, a skateboarder since he was 13, was involved with
the months or even years of local skateboarders'
fund-raising efforts prior to the park's opening in the fall of
1997.

Though there were a couple of grumblings about
improvements that need to be made to Skate Park, many of
the skaters, like Pottorf, said they are thankful for what they
have.

And why not? It beats dodging traffic, like Nick Hill, also
20, said he did when he was 12.

"There was no place to skate but the street," Hill said.

Pottorf says most guys on two wheels aren't on the same
page as skateboarders at the park. It takes a skateboarder
to know one. If bikers don't know what the skaters are
going to do - and vice versa - the ensuing collision could be
a painful one. And it isn't likely the skater is going to come
out of it in better shape.

These guys take enough of a beating as it is.

"Anytime we come to skate, we know there's a possibility
we're not going to walk away," Pottorf joked. "I guess
that's why they call it an extreme sport."

As many times as the regulars at Skate Park have been
injured, they keep coming back. Pottorf has broken his
ankle a couple of times, but says he has seen worse - like
Cracked-open heads.

KC Mauk, 20, was out there sharpening his skills on the
tri-spine, an awkward obstacle on the course, just a couple
of months after he fractured his elbow. Before that, he was
doing it in a splint.

Troy Lawton, 14, another regular at the park, said his worst
injury was a broken thumb last year - nothing compared
with the fingernail he saw torn off along with half the skin on
another kid's pointer.

"Usually when you eat it, you're doing something pretty big,"
Hill said.

With those kinds of horror stories, it might be hard to
believe many of them are in a hurry to get out there. Many
of the school-age kids are at the park by 3:07 p.m, like
Justin Lessard, 13, who goes to school right next door at
Pioneer Middle School. A lot of the older guys are there
throughout the day.

Yes, they're a different breed. But they have a connection.

It's not really about being the best, or even doing it better
than the next guy. Sometimes it's like playing "PIG" or
"HORSE" on the basketball court. One guy does
something, then the other tries.

Glen Wait, 18, is something of a teacher out there - not like
a know-it-all, but in a laid-back sort of way. Having spent
as much as six hours a day skateboarding, he has something
to pass along. And the others listen.

They help each other out. They share techniques, offer
suggestions, or just say "yeeaaah" when someone lands a
big one. Hill said they even take the beginners under their
wings - watch out for them, keep them safe, show them
some pointers.

"We're not here to be better than anybody," Pottorf said.
"We're here because we like it."

And they are there because it's their place.

But as Yahoo/Geocities a past Webhost for Gene`s BMX
and still hosts foward add links now to the newley url of
Gene`s BMX, This news clip was found to be sorta funny.
Just wondering what the amount of the settlement was for
this guy? Does anyone know? If so, please Yodel it out to me.

SPOKANE , WASHINGTON - 04/23/2002
Wylie Gustafson can really shout "Yahoo!" now.

The cowboy yodeler from Dusty, Wash.,
has settled his lawsuit against Internet giant Yahoo! Inc.
for using his distinctive yodel in its national advertising.

"They wanted to do the right thing and pay for a vocalization
that has become a worldwide trademark," Gustafson said
Monday from his ranch south of Spokane Wa.

Terms of the settlement, which was reached late last week,
were not released.

"The only way I can characterize it is I am very happy
and it won't change my life," Gustafson said.

The yodel, which the company said is "known and loved
by millions of people around the world," will continue to
be featured on Yahoo! advertising. It goes "Ya-hooooo."

"Wylie Gustafson yodels on for Yahoo!," the company said
in a news release. "While both parties had a reasonable basis
for their beliefs, as soon as Yahoo! learned of the suit, the
company responded promptly and fairly."

Gustafson, 40, a native of Conrad, Mont., performs
around the nation with his band Wylie & The Wild West.

Back in 1996, Gustafson said he was considered
"the yodeling guy" by Los Angeles talent agencies.
He yodeled in ads for Sprint, Mitsubishi, Miller
Lite and Taco Bell.

The job for Yahoo! didn't seem like much, a bit of work
for a start-up company from Sunnyvale, Calif., with little
advertising budget. Gustafson arranged the notes, sang
his yodel, collected $590, and forgot about it.

"I didn't hear about it until three years later,
when I saw it on the Super Bowl," Gustafson said.

He contacted the commercial production house,
and tried to vain to get the attention of someone inside Yahoo!
He received an additional $590.38 for his efforts.

Gustafson hired an attorney last year,
but still couldn't get the company's attention.

His copyright infringement lawsuit,
filed Tuesday in federal court in Los Angeles,
did. By the end of the week the matter was settled.

"They realized it was a mistake and were very
quick in righting a wrong," Gustafson said.

Gustafson and his four-member band are performing
this week at a music festival in North Carolina, and he's
also performed regularly on the Grand Ole Opry.

Gustafson and his band have released seven albums,
"and every album has yodeling on it."

"Yodeling is a lost art that I have tried to revive,"
Gustafson said.

When not on the road, Gustafson lives on a cattle
and quarterhorse ranch two miles south of Dusty.

MANCHESTER, NH. 04/23/2002
George Muller, Subaru of America's former president,
on May 1 will become president of Segway,

Though the scooters are not yet in commercial production,
Segway has successfully lobbied legislatures in several states
to allow the machines on sidewalks.

Muller was president and chief executive of Subaru
of America from 1993 to 2000. He left in June 2000
to work as an adviser with CMR Private Equity.

The U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works
Committee may discuss a bill to allow scooters
on federally funded trails Thursday, April 25.

*** Shenzhen Bicycle Company Posts $243 Million 2001 Loss **

SHENZHEN, China 04/23/2002
Shenzhen China Bicycle Company posted a loss of
$243 Million in 2001, which analysts are saying is the
largest yearly loss posted by a publicly held Chinese business.

Once the world's largest bicycle exporter,
China Bicycle Company (CBC) was founded by Jerome Sze
in 1985 and quickly entered into a partnership with Schwinn.
It also owned the Diamond Back brand for a few years.
It produces bikes for the domestic Chinese market as well
as export markets in North America and Europe.
The company posted a net lost of $18.7 million, in 2000.

The past two years have seen record numbers of Chinese
bicycle exported to the United States, China's biggest
export market. And though the Chinese bicycle industry
is competitive, many companies are doing well. Analysts
said company mismanagement is behind the record losses.
