*** Wal-Mart bicycle gift from Daytona puzzles Wallace ***
HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- 12/01/2005
Rusty Wallace has been given a lot of gifts as he visited
race tracks for the final time in his NASCAR Nextel Cup
career this year.
Wallace, who'll get one last round or tributes before Sunday's
Ford 400 scheduled, has no problem saying which of those
has been his favorite - and his least favorite.
"The most wonderful award I've got so far, definitely, was
from Bristol Motor Speedway," Wallace said. "They created
my own trophy for me, a replica of the race track, out of solid
bronze. It weighs about 400 pounds and has all my victories on
it. ... It was just wonderful."
Wallace also enjoyed getting "Rusty Wallace Day"
proclamations from several governors, having a road
at the Concord Regional Airport named Rusty Wallace
Drive and getting a grandfather clock with each of his
wins at Martinsville on it from that track.
The one gift that puzzles him, though, came
from Daytona International Speedway.
"Daytona gave me a three-wheel bicycle like an old man
riding off in the sunset," he said. "I really didn't know how
to take that. I heard they bought it at Wal-Mart two hours
before they did it. I guess there was not a lot of thought
put into that one.
"I would have thought the biggest speedway in the world,
Daytona International Speedway, would have given me
something different than a three-wheel bicycle, but other
than that, I'm grateful for everything."

*** Skatepark gets community rolling ***
SEASIDE, OREGON — 11/30/2005
Seaside gets the wheels turning on permanent recreation facility.
“I really believe that we can have a rideable beautiful world-class
skatepark here in Seaside, Oregon, in August,” said Sunset Parks
Director Mary Blake, part of a diverse group of people who have
worked on the skatepark project.
Since arson shut down the temporary skatepark Sept. 19, Blake,
Angela Fairless and children on the skatepark committee have raised
money to repair it. The ramp has been resurfaced with a non-
flammable plastic sheeting and has been open at Broadway Park
for about four weeks.
“It’s a lot better,” said skater Chris Senick, 16.
“It’s a lot smoother.”
The permanent skatepark will be built in the same location,
but will be about three times the size.
The estimated $300,000 needed for the skatepark will come
from the Sunset Parks budget, grants and community donations.
Blake has said Sunset Parks has $100,000 set aside in its budget
and may be able to contribute $200,000 through grants, although
she hopes in-kind donations and volunteer work from the community
will allow the parks department to contribute less.
Blake plans a December letter to those who have contributed or
volunteered and those who have asked for more information. It
will give an update on the progress toward a permanent skate
park and will ask people to participate in any way desired.
Businesses can make one-time donations or contribute a portion
of the profits from a specific item or service. Blake pointed out
that donations could come from people who want to make a tax
-deductible donation during this calendar year.
Local designer Stefan Hauser will work on the skatepark design
in December, with ideas from skaters on the Seaside Skatepark
Committee. This will be part of a design for the entire Broadway
Park that the city will conduct with a separate designer.
“That is the exciting piece that we have all been waiting for,”
Blake said. “That designer will sit down with the parks committee
and also hold public meetings.” The planning for the park is possible
because the City Council recently approved a parks master plan.
There will be a public meeting in January to discuss community
needs for the park, said Blake, who wants to address other needs
besides those of skaters. “We just don’t want to start being insensitive
to the other elements of what this park will hold for our community,”
she said.
The playing fields may be adjusted as a result of the park
planning, and play equipment may be replaced. “There is
equipment that is outdated,” Blake said.
Park planning and fundraising will start in January, with a
skating event to raise money Feb. 4. Blake hopes to have
the design approved by Seaside’s Park Committee in May
or June, with construction starting at the end of June or in
July and lasting four to six weeks.
“The neat thing is that people are contacting us on how they want
to help or making donations,” she said, mentioning that two families
have made memorial donations.
The first skatepark was closed because of concerns with vandalism.
Blake blamed that on visibility problems and said a skatepark in
Broadway Park will be overseen by police and community members
who are passing by and will be occasionally checked on by Sunset
Parks staff. “We will be keeping an eye on the facility on a daily
basis,”
she said.
Yet the parks department will not provide a staff person to
monitor the park. Blake said skateparks are usually not supervised,
and shouldn’t be because of liability concerns. The department could
be legally responsible if an accident happened while a staff member
was watching.
Blake is not concerned about liability when parks employees
are not watching. “Skaters are not inclined to sue; they want to
skate,” she said. There are signs at the park saying patrons
skate at their own risk.
Skater Drew Weil, 10, uses the park almost every day. He said
there were originally fights over who got to use the ramp because
it was new and everyone wanted to be first. However, Weil said
the fights have stopped.
The temporary park was designed and built by skaters for about
$5,000. The repair from the arson cost about $6,000. The new
sheeting has far fewer gaps, which means skaters are less likely
to fall. The new surface has small holes to drain rainwater. Unlike
the previous surface, it has no graffiti art.
The ramp was originally intended to be auctioned to raise money
for the permanent skatepark, but Blake now plans to keep it and
install it in another city park, possibly at Cartwright Park at Avenue
S and Franklin Street or Goodman Park on 12th Avenue and
Necanicum Drive. She said the Cartwright location can be monitored
by police and neighbors. It is next to the Seaside School District
administrative offices.
Senick said he would probably not be skating without the temporary
skatepark, or would be skating somewhere downtown. Skaters can
be cited and given a $700 fine for skating on sidewalks in the drug
-free zone, an area between Avenue A, First Avenue, the Prom and
U.S. Highway 101. They have been criticized for skating on the
Prom and damaging the benches there. However, Mayor Don Larson
has praised skaters for becoming more respectful of the benches.
Young skaters Carl Beery and Jared Pemberton stopped by the
skatepark to watch. Pemberton said the ramp has helped him learn
to pump, bending and straightening his legs to skate up the sides of
the ramp. Beery said he is on the skatepark committee, a group of
skaters who meet at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the Youth Center at 1140 E.
Broadway to discuss fundraising and what the permanent skatepark
should look like.
Blake said there has been a great deal of speculation about who
was responsible for the arson, but there is no conclusive evidence
implicating any person. “That the community responded as well
as they did was really quite gratifying and very exciting to us and
such a compliment to our children and the other skaters,” she said.
She praised Seaside Police Chief Bob Gross for his free helmet
program, saying any child can go to the police station at 1091 S.
Holladay Drive with a parent to receive a helmet.

*** Chenoa gets $300,000 trail grant ***
Chenoa, IL -- 11/30/2005
The city of Chenoa has received a $300,000 federal grant
for the Chenoa Route 66 Prairie Trail, it was announced this
week by the office of U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin.
The grant was among $2 million provided to the Illinois
Department of Transportation (IDOT) for Illinois Trails
under a federal transportation bill for fiscal year 2006.
Other money was earmarked for transportation enhancement
projects in Illinois, including the Springfield Interurban Trail,
Urbana to Danville Trail, Galena River Trail, and Camp
Sacajawea Trail (Adams County).
"This funding guarantees that there will be a project," Chenoa
City Commissioner Jayne Zeller said this week of the bike trail
in Chenoa. The grant represents about 40 percent of the budget
for the bicycle trail, proposed by Zeller and approved by the
City Council in July.
She said that staff in Durbin's office "were instrumental" in
helping Chenoa get the money. When she was writing a grant
proposal to IDOT, Zeller said, she contacted Durbin's Springfield
office, asking for a letter of support by Durbin to IDOT.
Only three letters are allowed per grant application.
Zeller said she started working with Durbin's officer in June,
and they later notified her that the senator would support the
Chenoa bike trail for federal funding under the transportation
bill through IDOT.
A member of Durbin's Springfield office staff contacted Mayor
Walt Hetman and Zeller, who is commissioner of streets and alleys,
on Monday to announce the inclusion of funding.
In July, the Chenoa City Council agreed to move forward with
a grant applications for a bike trail along Old Route 66 and
through other parts of the community.
Durbin, D-Ill., announced this week that a Senate-House
conference committee has approved $187.36 million in
federal funding for transportation and housing projects. The
conference committee approved the funding, which was
included in the fiscal year 2006 transportation and housing
spending bill already approved by the House, according to
a news. Durbin is a member of the Senate Appropriations
Committee and served as a conferee.
The legislation, Durbin noted, included $34.5 million for the
construction of a new federal courthouse in Rockford and more
than $45 million to reconstruct the Douglas Line of the Chicago
Transit Authority's Blue Line. Additionally, $40 million was included
to expand the CTA's Ravenswood Brown Line, $42 million to
expand Metra; $8 million for bus replacement and bus facilities;
and $2 million for the Normal Transportation Center among other
projects.
The fiscal year 2006 appropriations bill was for the Departments
of Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development,
and Independent Agencies Appropriations included funding for
projects including the Normal Multi-Modal Transportation Center,
Normal, which received $2 million.
For the Federal Railroad Administration, the bill included
$500,000 for the Illinois Commerce Commission's Public
Education and Enforcement Research (PEERS) program
to improve rail-grade crossing safety through education
and enforcement initiatives.

*** RFID rolls for bike rentals in France ***
Lyon, France -- 11/30/2005
Cyclists can rent bicycles with a swipe of a contactless,
pre-paid, RFID card at kiosks in Lyon, France.
JCDecaux said Monday it will add 100 Cyclocity self-checkout
kiosks for the city of Lyon, France and the surrounding suburbs
where cyclists can rent bicycles with a swipe of a contactless, pre
-paid card with radio frequency identification technology (RFID)
inside.
The transportation project initiated by the city of Lyon kicked
off in May and already JCDecaux is boasting 10,000 subscribers.
"There are 175 locations where riders can rent bikes," said Agathe
Albertini, communication director at JCDecaux, which is known
for its advertising campaigns on electronic billboards, benches and
kiosks throughout Europe.
Albertini said the bicycle kiosks enable JCDecaux to keep
track of between 12,000 and 14,000 rentals daily. They can
monitor who rents the bicycles as well as the hours and the day.
More than 2000 bicycles are rented on average between 10 and
12 times daily.
ASK S.A. developed the contactless technology. The application
uses silver-ink silk-screen printed antenna on a paper substrate to
identify the card owner on the point of sale device at the kiosk.
The application lets long-term subscribers rent velo'v bicycles
with smart cards to contactless paper tickets for day rentals.
The RFID applications vendor has provided contactless Tecely
cards for the city of Lyon for years. Consumers need only one
card to ride buses, tramways and the Metro.
Now, Tecely cardholders can use the same card to rent velo'v
bicycles. Customers who do not have a Tecely card are issued
an C.ticket, ASK's contactless paper ticket at velo'v kiosks.
ASK has more than 50 million contactless cards and tickets in
use from Paris to Rome to Taipei to Singapore to the United
States. San Francisco, California adopted smart cards for public
transportation in 2003, and relies on one ticket to travel on public
transportation such as buses, ferries, trams, trains and trolleys.

*** North American Handmade Bicycle Show ***
SAN JOSE, CA — 11/30/2005
The second annual North American Handmade Bicycle Show,
scheduled for March 3–5, 2006 added a cocktail reception to
Friday evening’s schedule. Surf and classic rock tunes will be
provided by “The Motherfluxers,” a trio comprised of frame
builders Brian Baylis and Paul Sadoff, along with Rick Williams.
“Attending Interbike was a huge thing for us. We were able
to sell at least 20 more booth spaces and made important
connections to those interested in exhibiting,” said Don Walker,
organizer of the show. “We have surpassed our expectations
and have to move the show to a larger hall in the San Jose
Convention Center Complex. The builders who have signed
up read like a ‘who’s who’ in bicycle framebuilding.”
The 2006 show is expected to be at
least four times as large as the first show.
“We are still looking for sponsors of this great event,”
said Walker. “There’s so much opportunity here with
this wonderful market that is virtually starving for a show
of this kind.”

*** Thaw point as icy bmx track proves tricky ***
ROYSTON , UK -- 11/30/2005
The Royston Rockets BMX Racing Club hosted
round two of the East Anglian Winter Series on Sunday.
The track was frozen solid for the first half of the event,
but as the sun came out parts of the track thawed on the
surface.
It left a layer of sludge which got into the bikes' mechanics
and the riders' clothing to make the final part of the day very
unpleasant, although the 80-plus riders who took part enjoyed
some very competitive racing.
The youngest class are nominally seven years and under and
are known as Formula 5, and Royston had five riders in the
class, with the best result going to Bradan Blanche, who finished
fifth in the A final, ahead of his cousin Daniel Blanche, who was
seventh.
Aaron Dalleywater was second in the B final and first-time
riders Luca Stephenson and Jasia Blanche came fourth and
fifth in the heavy conditions.
In Formula 4 for 8-10 year olds, all three Rockets made the
A final, headed home by Louis Burton in third closely followed
by Kyle Gutteridge in fourth and the youngest rider in the class,
Ethan Lewis, eighth.
Another five Rockets were competing in Formula 3 (11-13 years)
with Anthony Taylor third in the A final, Ben Gutteridge in fourth
and James Handleigh eighth after a last-corner technical problem
while battling for a podium position.
Aston Blanche took second in the B final just
ahead of new club member Darren Plumb.
Both Royston members in the Formula 2 class found the
competition tough, with Katie Roberts taking sixth in the
A final and Wayne Gutteridge finishing third in the B final.
Formula 1, for riders 17 years and over, was by far the
biggest on the day and the three Rockets had successful
outings.
Richard Townsend was third and Jonathan Roberts finished
fifth in the A final, while James Dalleywater took fifth in the B final.
The next round of the Winter Series will be on December 11,
at Milton Keynes, and the Royston Club hope to have a full
contingent of riders making the trip.
Full details of forthcoming club and regional events are published
on the club web site at http://www.roystonrockets.co.uk or ring

*** Schwinn at the ABA Grand Nationals ***
Tulsa, OK -- 11/29/2005
If Gnarly Nate was going to have his best race weekend
of the season, the ABA Grands sure was a good place to
do it. Nate was ON FIRE all weekend, winning lap after
lap and wowing the crowd with tons of style over the many
tricky jumps on the track. What a showman.
He did really well to make it to the AA Pro main, where he
finished a very respectable 5th place for the day. Not wanting
to end it there, Nate had a convincing win in the Pro Open class,
as he won from wire to wire. VERY IMPRESSIVE.
Congratulations Nate, on a job well done.

*** Kore Launches Taiwanese Spokes ***
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — 11/29/2005
Kore Bicycle Components launched a spoke line made
from the same high-end Swedish Sandvik stainless steel
wire as European spoke makers use.
“Everyone wants the quality of European spokes but they do
not want to pay for it. Making the spokes in Taiwan is slightly
cheaper than making them in Europe, but there is no getting
around the fact that if you want Sandvik quality wire, you are
going to have to pay for it,” said Lance Bohlen, Kore Bicycle
Components’ general manager.
A recent batch of bad spokes currently making their way
through the specialty retail channel is the latest chapter in
a troubled history for spoke makers. Given this history
Bohlen expects Kore’s guarantee of genuine Sandvik
wire in every spoke and tight quality control will get a
lot of attention.
Kore expects pricing to run about one to two dollars more
a wheel over spokes made from Japanese or Korean sourced
wire, but Bohlen quips that you can pay now or you pay much
more later fixing the problems bad spokes cause. The spokes
will be ready for ’07 model year bikes.

*** All biked up and no place to park ***
Wenatchee, Washington -- 11/29/2005
Wenatchee advisory board has racks
in storage, needs help to install them...
For three years, the need for more bicycle racks in the
city has gone unanswered. The answer, meanwhile,
collects dust inside a storage unit on Ninth Street.
Fourteen bicycle racks have gone unused since the Greater
Wenatchee Bicycle Advisory Board purchased them in 2002.
At the same time, people downtown decry the lack of bicycle
racks.
"It takes decisions to put them somewhere and volunteer
labor to put them in, and sometimes those things don't line
up at the right time," said Charles Hickenbottom, a member
of the Greater Wenatchee Bicycle Advisory Board.
The board acquired 20 racks three years ago with
money from the city's Neighborhood Grants program.
Three of the racks went in front of the city library, he said.
Three others went to the Women's Resource Center on
Palouse Street. The rest are inside a metal storage unit
without a bike in sight.
"It's a shame they are in storage," Hickenbottom said.
"We have lost momentum as a board and have not
done a good job."
Hickenbottom said board members hope to find a
useful place for the 14 bike racks, especially downtown.
Since the board's Nov. 16 meeting, several groups have
expressed interest in getting racks, including the Wenatchee
School District and the Wenatchee Downtown Association,
Hickenbottom said.
"We are full of ideas now," he said.
Kathy Allen, executive director of the Wenatchee Downtown
Association, said the city's central area needs more bike racks.
There are at most 10 bike racks downtown, she said, and their
locations are so bad that most people end up not using them
because they are not near places people ride to.
"They installed them without regard to traffic patterns," she said
of the racks installed downtown during the late 1980s. "If there
was room for one, they put one."
Bike rack placement elsewhere will be discussed during
the board's Dec. 14 meeting, Hickenbottom said.
"The racks should go in places where people would go to on
a bike -- lunch places, service-oriented businesses," said Dan
Frazier, the city's maintenance manager. The Columbia River
pedestrian bridge could be another option, he added.
Also, the city will look for places where people are using trees
or light posts as bike racks, which is what Hickenbottom said
he does most of the time.
"It's frowned upon, but if there's no other option, it's probably
an indicator we should put a bike rack there," Frazier said.

*** Flying start for BMX park ***
Norwich, UK -- 11/29/2005
The long wait for a BMX racetrack in the city is finally over.
The new £50,000 track, which opened yesterday, will
be free to members of the public seven days a week.
It will also be home to the Norwich Flyers BMX Club,
which has not had a home since last September.
The club heard last year it would lose its previous
home track at Costessey Pits due to redevelopment.
The last day of racing at the makeshift Ringland Lane
track took place in September last year.
Norwich City Council began to plan for a facility at
Sloughbottom Park off Drayton Road, Mile Cross.
But in May the Evening News reported that the track in
the southwest corner of the park hit delays because of
problems with the soil and design.
But the brakes finally came off and the £50,000 project,
which took about 10 weeks to complete, was unveiled
to the public yesterday.
The national standard racetrack will be home to the Norwich
Flyers BMX Club, which will continue to provide club practice
sessions and also take part in the Eastern Region BMX Racing
Series there.
The track will also provide free of charge facilities for people of
all ages and levels from the community and across the county.
Tim Gregory, 37, a founder and vice chairman of the club,
said it was the realisation of a 20-year-old dream.
"The last track we had was not accessible to the public,
but this track is, and the public will be able to use it free
of charge 24/7," he said.
The track was opened by the Lord Mayor of Norwich,
Mick Banham, who said: "I am pleased for the Norwich
Flyers who, with support from Norwich City Council,
have been able to get £50,000 worth of funds to open
a new facility in Norwich. I congratulate and thank everyone
who has been involved.
"It is wonderful to see a new facility for young people and
I hope the local community will also make use of the new
track. It will provide a great base for races and perhaps
some new national champions for the city."
Yesterday saw hundreds of racing fans converge on the
racetrack for a day of activities from 11am - 4pm and
the Flyers club also put on demonstrations throughout
the day.
Norwich Flyers has been offering BMX racing – which will
be an Olympic sport from 2008 - to people of all ages in
Norwich for more than 20 years and has produced a number
of regional and national champions.
The club has up to 200 members ranging from five
and six-year-old children to adults in their 40s.
Norwich City Council's Green Spaces chose Sloughbottom
Park as the best site for the track because it is accessible by
most people in Norwich.
The track was built by specialist BMX
track builders TRAX SN Jenks.
The new BMX track has been made possible by the project's
funding partners: Barclays Spaces for Sport, Norwich City
Council, Norwich City Council Neighbourhood Wardens,
Norfolk Constabulary, Norwich Community Safety Partnership
and Wagener DM Transmail.

Way to go everyone! as the year in bmx of 2005 comes to a end.
The ABA in the back past few year had a live internet
raido broadcast of the ABA BMX Grand Nationals in Tulsa,
Oklahoma wich was real cool to kick back during the Thank
giving weekend and here all the BMX racing action from the last
race of the year. It was always nice to here what was going
on there. But the ABA put a damper on that, so it seems so.....
This year 2005 the ABA did not have a live internet raido
broadcast of the ABA BMX Grand Nationals in Tulsa Ok
A big and good hand full of people around the world are
wondering why the ABA was not offering a live raido broad
cast like it has in the past? who knows why......
Someother web site ISTV offered a radio broadcast
but the broadcast cost $5.99 - that is a bit much to ask:(
Some people where willing to pay the cost but when some
of the people enterd there credit card and information to
pay them money, some got a reply email telling them that
there credit card and information would be prossed on the
next working business day , making that Nov 28th before
they would beable to here the Grand Nationals in Tulsa Ok.
Now thats is a big blow to the sport of bmx of them to do that.
To purchase a internet web cast of a bmxing event has to be
about one of the bigest blows to the sport of bmx that there is.
It realy makes other people looking at what the sport of bmx is,
wondering if they realy want to get invovled with it. And alot of
people in the sport of bmx wonder why the sport of bmx racing
is not a big thing....."Like think about it some there" it shows alot.
Also there web site, it says nothing for that amount of money
that people would beable to here the Grand Nationals in Tulsa.
So it sort of is a down fall that a big hand full of people around
the world did not get to here the Grand Nationals this year..sad
So Is the ABA going to bring back its live internet raido web casts
of ABA bmxing events? It would be nice if the ABA could do so.....
All and all, for what reports that have been seen around the web,
it looks as if the 2005 Grand Nationals was a fun event..............

*** Dubnicoff to coach national BMX team ***
OTTAWA, Canada (CP) -- 11/28/2005
The Canadian Cycling Association has hired former
world champion and Olympic medallist Tanya Dubnicoff
as the national BMX coach while Houshang Amiri has
been hired as National Cycling Centres head coach.
Dubnicoff's new job is a return to her roots - she began her
competitive career as a BMX racer in Winnipeg in the early
1980s. Since retiring from competition after the 2000 Sydney
Olympics, she's been coaching at the National Cycling Centre
in Calgary.
"I'm excited to be taking on the challenge of building on
Canada's current BMX success and taking it to the next
level," Dubnicoff said in a release.
Amiri, a member of the Iranian national team in the 1970s and
'80s, was head coach of the Pacific Sport National Cycling
Centre in Victoria, and will continue to coach elite athletes there
while co-ordinating access to National Cycling Centre services
for national team athletes.

*** Group provides bikes to people needing ***
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) -- 11/28/2005
Mark Merritt is in the business of helping people
get back on their feet -- and then using them.
He has given away about 150 bicycles to people who have
no other form of transportation though a program with Central
Nebraska Community Services.
Bikes can really make a difference in the life of someone who
needs transportation, he said. They can help people get to
appointments, receive medical care and even make it easier to
get -- and stay -- employed, said Merritt, who works for CNCS
as a supportive housing project case manager.
The rise in gas prices also makes the bikes more attractive,
he said.
Dozens of bicycles have been donated by people who simply
don't use them anymore. Merritt and other people at Wayne's
Cyclery in Grand Island then fix the bikes before they are distributed.
"Used bikes have little to no value and they often get tossed in
the trash," said John Wayne, owner of Wayne's Cyclery. "If it's
a functional bicycle, the way I see it, there's no reason not to
give it a good home."
About a dozen bikes are currently in the store waiting to be
distributed, while a few more are waiting for minor repairs.
The idea came to Merritt while he was working part-time
at the shop, he said. Several other employees also work
during their spare time to fix the donated bicycles.
They've been able to meet demand so far, but sometimes Merritt
said he has to tell people wanting bikes to come back in a week.
The bikes usually don't need much in the way of repairs, he said,
and it's not really worth it for them to fix anything that needs more
than $30 worth of work.
Merritt said he hopes they get more donations this winter,
when they'll have more time to spend on repairs.
"It's a constant search for more," he said.
Some people who have received the bikes have turned around
and donated them after their situations improve and they're able
to provide transportation for themselves.
Adam Van Cleave, who helps do repairs, said that gives him
and others running the program satisfaction, knowing that they've
helped people improve their lives.
"When you give them a bike, they have no more excuses,"
Van Cleave said. "They can't say 'I can't get there.' They're
more productive."

*** Protect bikes from winter's cold and damp ***
Indianapolis, IN -- 11/28/2005
Store away from ozone-emitting
appliances and lubricate, lubricate,
Winter is tough on cyclists. It's tough on our bikes, too.
You can help your bike survive winter's onslaught so
that it emerges healthy and happy next spring. The program
you follow depends on whether you'll be storing or riding
your bike over the next several months.
A quick caveat: If you're not comfortable performing
these tasks, take your bike to your local bicycle dealer.
Improper servicing can have disastrous results, and there's little
room for error. At the very least you should consult a service manual.
The best storage environment is clean and dry and has minimal
temperature fluctuations. There should be no refrigerator, freezer
or other appliance with a motor, as these produce ozone, and
ozone is tough on rubber components such as tires and grips.
Arc welders are ozone factories; never store your bike in an
area where welding may take place.
Wash and dry the bike thoroughly before storing it.
Make sure there's no water trapped in the frame tubes,
bottom bracket or hubs. Touch up any paint chips, and
then wax all painted surfaces. Lubricate all the moving parts,
including cables, derailleurs and brake pivots.
Remove batteries from computers and lights to prevent
corrosion damage. It's also a good idea to grease quill
stems and non-carbon seat posts to keep them from
getting stuck in the frame.
Store the bike with the weight off its tires. You can hang it by
the saddle or handlebars, or invert it and hang it by its wheels.
The best option is to support it by the top tube of the frame
with soft, nonporous arms. A consumer bike rack is ideal for this.
Tire inflation is not an issue when the tires aren't supporting the
bike.
Still, you may want to pump up the tires once a month or so to keep
them within 80 percent of the pressure used during the riding season.
Operate all lubricated parts at least once a month to keep
the lube distributed on the parts it's protecting. Spin the wheels.
Turn the handlebars. Work the brakes and shifters.
If you'll continue riding this winter, it's still a good idea to start
the season by cleaning and lubricating your bike. Learn to love
the job, because a bike that's ridden in winter will require frequent
cleaning and lubrication.
Three areas are especially susceptible to contamination.
First, the chain. (Go to the Monthly Column page of
http://www.BigRingAdventure.com for chain maintenance
recommendations and a review of four popular chain lubes.)
The second area is the lower bearing assembly of the
headset, which is subjected to spray from the front tire.
The third is the bearings on the bottom bracket if you have one
of the newer style bottom brackets with bearings external to the
bottom bracket shell. These seem to be more prone than their
predecessors to sucking in water.
Brakes that are wet or cold perform poorly. Learn to brake early,
allowing the pads time to squeegee off water and build up some
heat while stopping. Severe-condition pads are helpful, although
they can accelerate wear on the rims.
Winter streets are strewn with debris, so flat-resistant tires
are a good idea. Several manufacturers offer them, but do
a little research to get the best model. One notable difference
is the width of the protective belt, which is usually made of
Kevlar or something similar. In some tires this belt goes across
the entire width of the tread, from bead to bead. In others it's
a narrow strip under the center of the tread.
Wider is better.
Tire liners and heavy-duty tubes add even more protection.
Wider tires and lower pressure will give better traction on trails
in winter, especially in mud and snow. You may have to start with
higher pressure to prevent pinch flats and rim damage if the ground
is frozen and then drop some pounds as things warm up and the top
layer of soil gets slick.
With diminished daylight, winter compels us to ride in the dark
more often. A battery's output falls off as the temperature drops,
so don't count on getting the same time from your lights in January
as you do in July.

*** BMX Sisters pursue Grands stand ***
Rapid City, SD -- 11/27/2005
Most families have Thanksgiving holiday traditions,
usually involving a gathering with family and friends
for a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, then watching
football and dozing off after the big meal.
For the Hopperdietzel family of Rapid City, Turkey Day means
a trip to Oklahoma to compete in the Bicycle Motocross (BMX)
Grand Nationals.
"For the last three years, we've had Thanksgiving at the
Village Inn in Tulsa," said Gordon Hopperdietzel. "It's
becoming a tradition for us."
Gordon and Jolene's daughters Victoria, 11, and Rachael, 7,
are firm contenders to win the American Bicycle Association's
season-ending championships, which starts with practice today
at Tulsa's Expo Square indoor arena.
Competition begins Friday with an invitation-only Race of
Champions, followed by Saturday's "Grands" to decide the
2005 national championships in numerous youth and adult
age groups. More than 1,000 riders are expected to compete.
Victoria, nicknamed "Grasshopper," finished fourth in the
Girls 10 ROC last year. Rachael "Cricket" tallied an eighth
in the Girls 6 class ROC.
Both girls are 10th in national points in their respective age
groups this year, with just one more chance to move up this
weekend.
"It's the Nationals, the last and biggest race of the year,"
Gordon said.
Victoria has been riding BMX since a cousin
talked her into giving the sport a try in 2001.
"She had a borrowed bike, a borrowed helmet and blue
jeans on," recalls Gordon. "And she went out and finished
second in her first race."
"It's really fun," she said.
Victoria also plays Rushmore Thunder girls varsity hockey,
along with volleyball, basketball and most any sport except
softball.
"We don't have to worry about her being active,
and you won't find many video games at our house,"
Gordon said.
Victoria hopes to become a pro BMX'er and has her eye
on the Olympics, where BMX will be a demonstration
sport in 2008.
Rachael, known as "Cricket," followed her
big sister into the sport in 2002.
"For a while it was little sister tagging along. Now it's
the same story again and here we are," Gordon said.
Rachael agreed about the fun part, and added, "I like getting trophies."
Participation in other sports keeps the girls in good
BMX condition, he said. The girls constantly practice
their gate starts and also will do sprints of varying
lengths in an empty parking lot.
"Basically, you want to keep the muscles that spin active,"
Gordon said.
Bicycle motocross shares many of the same characteristics
of the motorized version. Riders charge from a standing start
into a series of banked turns, jumps, whoops, and straight-a
-ways. Most races are a single lap on a course around 1,000
feet in length.
Local venues include tracks near the Harney Little League
baseball fields in the Robbinsdale area of Rapid City, and
at Box Elder BMX Raceway.
And like motocross, the key to success is timing along
with hand-and-foot coordination. Knowing when to pedal
hard and when to coast comes with experience, Gordon said.
Getting a good start off the ramp is also vital. An early
skill to be mastered is to balance the bike against the
starting gate, with both feet off the ground in the ready
-to-pedal-like-mad position.
"When the gate drops, I look for an opening,"
Victoria said.
And just because we're talking bicycles doesn't
mean the competition doesn't get cutthroat.
"If you're considered strong competition for someone, they'll
try to cut you off at the start," Gordon said. "If you have to get
on the brakes, you're pretty much done."
The bicycles are designed for minimal weight, but with enough
strength to handle the stresses of racing. Cost of a top bicycles,
with lightweight titanium or carbon-fiber frames, forks and bars
and aluminum wheels, can soar into the thousands of dollars.
"You can go nuts on a bike if you want to," Gordon said.
"We don't have extreme bikes, but they're not entry-level either.
It's a mental game for the parents to get the bikes set up for the
kids," he said.
Win or lose, both Gordon and Jolene say the best part is being
involved in a family activity. Their travels have included National
races as far away as Pennsylvania.
"We get all these mini-vacations every year,"
Gordon said.
"When we get back, hockey will already be going strong,
so we go right from one thing to another," Jolene added.
"It's a lot of work, but it's a lot of fun."

*** BMX rider jumps epilepsy barrier ***
New Zealand -- 11/27/2005
Alana Annas wasn't born on two wheels,
but she's so keen on BMX she might as
well have been.
The nine-year-old Whangarei girl has too many trophies and
prize certificates to display them all in her rural Kamo home.
She especially likes beating boys in the sport. She loves
riding so much that not even epilepsy will get in her way.
Alana suffers "tonic-clonic" or "grand mal" seizures
caused by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain.
She's happy to talk about it, but would rather talk about
bikes, helmets, jumps ... anything to do with BMX.
"I've been riding since I was four.
I train twice a day, but now I'm starting each morning
before school." She likes racing boys because of the
challenge.
"I have seizures and stuff,
but I just keep doing sport and everything."
The seizures come about once every week or two.
"I get a funny taste and if I lie down, sometimes it'll go.
If I don't lie down, I'll have a seizure. It's scary. When
I wake up I feel the bang (of hitting the ground)."
She doesn't really mind people knowing about her epilepsy.
Her mum Melanie Robinson, keeps an eye on her before
races, and has figured out that if Alana is "over-tired" she's
more likely to have a seizure, and withdraws her from those
races.
But Alana once had a seizure while on the bike track.
"I was going over a hump, coming first and I just did it.
I was coming around the corner and I just went blank."
She crashed, and scraped her arm, but was not put
off riding. She says it's still her favourite pastime.
Ms Robinson admitted to being nervous when Alana raced,
but is happy for her to continue because her daughter is so
passionate about the sport.
Janine Thomson, senior pediatric registrar at Whangarei
Hospital's child health centre, said Alana's positive attitude
was excellent.
"A number of children do have epilepsy. It's a reasonably
common thing. We encourage children to continue on with
their normal plans," she said.
"They should partake in all the things
that their friends and peers do."
However, while medical staff were in the stages of getting
a child's seizures under control through "anti-fit" medication,
she advised parents to take "sensible precautions".

*** Freestyle Biking Catches Air In NWA ***
ROGERS, AR -- 11/27/2005
Eric Catlin wasn't sure about the popularity of freestyle
biking in Northwest Arkansas, but it hasn't taken him
long to find out.
The 19-year-old moved to Arkansas from Ridgecrest, Calif.,
less than six months ago and over the weekend, Catlin put
together the Cathouse Freestyle BMX Jam held at the Rogers
Skate Park.
"It's turned out really big, a lot better than I expected," said
Catlin, who has been riding professionally for two years. "I
decided to throw a contest to showcase talent of the riders
in Rogers and the surrounding area."
The freestyle contest had 33 competitors divided into three
classes -- beginner, amateur and professional. Competitors
are judged on variety of tricks, speed, style and usage of the
park, Catlin said.
"You get a better score if you use a wide variety of tricks and
you're also judged how smooth you do things on the bike,"
Catlin said.
Evan Williams of Rogers won beginner, while 15-year-old Jose
Torres of Rogers won the amateur division. Brock Wormington
of Springfield, Mo., won the professional class.
Torres also won the 15-and-under
division of a contest called Putdown.
"Putdown is a game made up in Los Angeles that's best
described as demolition derby on bikes," Catlin said.
"You just ride around and knock people off balance
and make them put their foot down."
Catlin won the 16-and-over division of Putdown.
Cody Green, 17, of Rogers got Catlin's attention
by winning the Best Trick Contest.
Green's Superman Nothing trick left not
doubt who the winner was, Catlin said.
"It's a trick I've only seen a pair of professionals do," Catlin
said. "He jumped off the bike, kicked his feet back and took
his hands off the bike, extending them sideways like superman.
When he landed that, I said 'hey, you're the winner.'"

*** Vandals put skids on opening of skate park ***
Vallejo, CA -- 11/27/2005
Skateboarders and BMX bikers who have waited for
years to flip 360s and grab air in Vallejo's new skate-
and-dog park will have to wait a few more weeks before
hitting the bowls and ramps.
Vandals who recently spray-painted graffiti on part of the
$2 million Wardlaw Park project have forced the Greater
Vallejo Recreation District to postpone this week's scheduled
opening until the site can be cleaned.
The decision came a day before a fire damaged playground
equipment at the nearby Wardlaw Elementary School on
Wednesday.
On Tuesday, an inspector refused to grant insurance coverage
because layers of paint may create a slick riding surface, Park
Planner Hew Hesterman said.
Skaters and bike riders could lose
traction on the paint and fall, he added.
"Unfortunately the actions of a few people create a loss to
all the people who want to use it legitimately," Hesterman said.
The 17,000-square-foot facility isn't the only portion of the
park that has yet to open. Officials said a 2.3-acre dog park
also remains closed until spring while the lawn's root system
matures so it can withstand wear and tear from frolicking canines.
District officials estimate spending hundreds of dollars and
many hours to remove the graffiti, which includes racial slurs
and swastikas.
Preventing more graffiti
The tricky part is to keep the area free of spray paint until the
inspector signs off on insurance coverage, Hesterman said. The
district may post a guard, he said.
The agency also is trying to send a message to taggers to
leave the new park unmarked, General Manager Shane
McAffee said. "Don't mess up your own park," McAffee said.
Safety issues aside, graffiti also gives the area a negative image,
he said. "When I see graffiti in a community, I think, 'Oh man,
what kind of kids are running around here? What kind of pride
do people have?' "
The district will press charges against anyone
caught tagging the park, McAffee said.
As a deterrent, officials are threatening to temporarily close
the park whenever vandals strike. The closure should make
anyone think twice about spray-painting, McAffee said.
But that may dissuade few would-be taggers. Officials say skaters
already sneak into the fenced-off park at night to hit tricks in the
skate bowl, which resembles an empty swimming pool, but with
more twists and turns.
While authorities frown on graffiti, some see it as part
of the culture of riding skateboards and BMX bikes.
"There's always going to be graffiti," said BMX biker Joey
Colombo of Vallejo. The 22-year-old said parks he visits
in cities including Fairfield, Petaluma and Alameda are
covered in graffiti.
"You're not going to stop it," he said, adding he doesn't
condone graffiti. "It's going to happen anyway."
He said district officials should consider commissioning artwork
such as a mural to discourage anyone from spray-painting over it.
District officials, however, said that's not an option because the
insurance company won't allow it.
When American Canyon's skate park opened a couple years
ago, taggers struck, said Greg Hammond, maintenance supervisor
for streets and parks.
Now, "it doesn't happen as often at the skate park," Hammond said.
"Periodically we get somebody coming through and doing that."
Meanwhile, Vallejo parks officials are seeking ideas from skaters
and riders on what equipment, like ramps and rails, to order.
The park is split in two main areas - a flat section where
the obstacles will be installed and the bowl. Skateboarders
and BMX riders will alternate daily between the two zones,
officials said.

Steve Spencer have crafted an awesome track for this year`s
Grands, while long-time BMXer Galin Starlin made life a little
easier for the rakers with the Gannon box attached to his
Massey Ferguson tractor.
The brand-new Grands banner hangs above the starting gate
and it is beginning to look like the Grands. The decent-sized
starting hill shoots you down into a step-up, then a roller and
finally a double into the first turn. The long second straight
features a big double, big tabletop, big double with a kicker,
a roller and finally a step-up into the second turn.
The third straight has a roller which will split the pro and am sections
- the amateurs go left and the pros go right. On the left side, you have
a roller, roller, tabletop with a kicker, roller, roller, roller,
step-up,
step-down, triple step-up and finally a step-up into the tight last
turn.
On the right side, the pros will have a medium double, big double,
small double, small double and finally the step-up into the last turn.
Anyone thinking they can roll through the pro section this year might
want to take a good look at the middle of those doubles!
The last straight has a double into a step-hip
jump that turns you slightly for the finish line.
There you have it - the 2005 ABA Grands track is ready-to-go.

*** BMX dream nears reality for Manteca ***
MANTECA, CA — 11/24/2005
Bicycle motocross racer Richard Dutton used to ride his
bike every weekend at Stockton’s BMX track at the San
Joaquin Fairgrounds until it closed last year.
Now, the 15-year-old Manteca resident looks forward
to the opening of Manteca’s BMX racing track so he can
return to racing around a hilly, dirt track.
The city’s first BMX track is expected to open by next
summer in the Spreckels Business Park near Highway 99
and Yosemite Avenue. The track will be in a 10-acre storm
basin on the south portion of the business park near South
Spreckels Avenue and East Moffat Boulevard.
City Council members have said they hope to attract regional,
state and national BMX racing competitions at the park, which
would be open to riders of all ages and feature weekend meets.
The council had considered putting the track in a
7-acre storm drain basin behind Home Depot at
the northern end of the business park, but the area
had less parking space, and property owners in the
area expressed concerns about track visitors parking
in front of their businesses.
Manteca-based AKF Development owns the business park
and offered to donate the basin to the city for the track. The
company also has agreed to plant grass and install sprinklers
at the basin, said Steve Houx, Manteca’s Parks and
Recreation director.
The company will likely build a nearby parking lot as well as
the track under the direction of an official with the American
Bicycle Association, which sponsors BMX races across the
country, Houx said.
“They want to do what they can to help the community,”
Houx said of the AKF. “It should be pretty much no cost
to the city.”
Donating the land, improving landscaping and building the
track could cost the company up to $1 million, Houx said.
The city will probably use general fund money to pay for
the basin’s maintenance costs, which could run up to
$20,000 a year, he said.
“It’s sort of a trade off,” Houx said. “They spend more up front
to make it usable for the community, and they avoid the ongoing
maintenance costs.”
An engineer for the company is working on design plans for
the track. Houx said Tuesday he hoped to bring the plans to
the City Council for its approval in January.
City officials must rezone the basin from industrial to public use
as well as conduct an environmental study for the project, which
should take about three to four months. Construction should take
only a couple of months, Houx said.

*** Fundraising for skate park at Cole Park ***
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX -- 11/23/2005
Fundraising efforts continue for Corpus Christi's first
skate park. Junior Leaguers are in charge of raising
the $400,000 dollars to build the park at Cole Park.
Several skateboarders spent their Sunday shredding
through the Graham Central Station parking lot to raise
money so one day they'll have a real skate park to use.
It's not clear how much money will be raised, but
organizers think every little bit helps.
Kim Slusarz is owner of Straight Skate. She said, "I think
they're just getting to the point where if it's ever going to
happen, and I think if we can raise the money and get the
construction started, I think everyone will be a lot more
at ease and comfortable with the project."
The Straight Skate skateboard shop teamed up with the
Junior League to help raise money for the skate park.
The Junior League says it will continue fundraising for
a few months, and expect to have construction on the
skate park start in January.
But there's still a lot of work to do. Organizers need another
$150,000 to build the park, pay for lights, and put a fence
around it.
Janice Cubellis, with the Junior League, said, "It takes about
180 days to build the park, so we're hoping to have it ready
when the kids get out of school. That's our goal that by May,
it's open and ready, and we have a park in Cole Park."
To help meet the deadline, skate boarders pay a fee to perform
tricks now, so in the future, they, too, can be proud of the new
park they helped pay for.
"The more kids that can get out here and really feel like they're
fundraising, they're going to have a better ownership of the skate
park. It's not just the Junior League's skate park, it's Corpus
Christi's skate park," said Cubellis.
Cubellis says the Straight Skate skateboard store plans to
hold another fundraiser to benefit the project sometime in
March.

*** Funding sought for skatepark ***
BRIDGETON, NJ -- 11/23/2005
Good news, skater dudes!
While he would not guarantee it, Bob Rose is confident
that a skatepark can and will be built within city limits,
possibly as early as next summer.
"I think next summer is realistic,"
the city recreation director said Friday.
The proposed skatepark would be built in the city's sports
complex, at the end of Burt Street on the current location
of the under-utilized platform-tennis court, according to Rose.
BMX bikers also would be permitted to use the skatepark.
City council on Monday gave Rose its blessing to seek funding
for the proposed project. Rose now will work with all interested
parties to come up with the estimated $80,000 he believes it would
cost to build the facility -- his estimate is based on the cost of a
recently constructed skatepark in Clayton.
The majority of the skatepark's funding likely would come through
state and/or federal grants, with the balance made up through
fundraising efforts.
"We're trying to include everybody who has an interest in the sport,"
Rose said, noting he's recognized the sport recently has picked up
interest among city residents -- opponents of a city skatepark claim
it would be used by residents of the surrounding townships.
Brian Mitchell, owner of DB Custom, a Hopewell Township
skate shop, said Friday he is more than willing to work on
fundraising projects, whether they be beef-and-beer events
or bake sales. He added he would contribute portions of the
proceeds from the sale of skateboard decks bearing his shop's
logo to the effort .
Mitchell recalled his days as a teenage skater when he had to
run from police who were none to happy to see him and his
friends skating around town.
Mitchell, 34, is optimistic the current and next generations of
area skateboarders won't have to contend with the same problems.
"We've been trying to get one since I started riding 20, 25
years ago," he said. "There's a lot of skaters and bikers around
here who are skating and riding and getting into trouble in town.
(A skatepark) would get them out of town. It would give them
a place to go."
Mitchell said he's already received commitments from professional
skating and BMX teams to come down to the area to do
demonstrations. But he needs a skatepark to invite them to first.
The idea for the skatepark is to have it operate as a league,
much like the existing football and baseball leagues in the city,
according to Rose. There would be set hours for the skatepark
-- it would be enclosed by a fence and closed during school hours.
The insurance costs associated with the skatepark, which would
be paid for by the city, would be offset by the sale of daily and
seasonal, or league, passes. And, Rose stressed, there would always
be a supervisor on-hand to make sure the park's rules are being obeyed.
