*** Next step for Wenatchee trail planners ***
Wenatchee, Washington — 07/07/2005
— Build support: Presentations to
organizations will begin this summer
Last month’s “Wenatchee Trails Connections” workshop
brought a large number of architecture and planning experts
to help design a more complete paths system for the city.
Now that the workshop is over, local experts who participated
have discovered that the workshop also brought them a long
to-do list to make that design a reality.
At least for now, they are being
patient while going through that list.
“It’s not going to happen overnight,” said Nancy Warner
of the Wenatchee Trails Coalition. “It’s important to
emphasize that this will be a long-term process.”
There is no set price tag or timeline, but those who attended
the workshop June 24-26 agree that one of the first steps will
be to get the city authorities and the community behind their
two-part dream of improving the trailheads at the foothills west
of the city and connecting them with Wenatchee’s existing trails.
The way to do that is by taking the ideas gleaned at the workshop
to various organizations, from the City Council to service clubs,
and showing them what the new and improved trails system could
do for the city’s quality of life.
“We would like people to think of how this
is going to improve the community,” Warner said.
Presentations will start this summer, said Rebecca
Garvoille of the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust.
Warner said the groups working on the trail designs,
including her group and the land trust, hope to put together
a report they can show to different audiences.
One of the possible outcomes of these presentations is to
have the city adopt the new trail designs as part of its recreational
comprehensive plan, said Allison Williams, the city’s executive
services director.
With community and municipal support of their report,
they could submit it to potential funding sources, Warner
said.
A possible funding source for the project could be private citizens’
donations. Another source could be state grants from the Interagency
Committee for Outdoor Recreation, Warner said.
