*** BMX Pedal power kicks off for 2005 ***

Victoria, Australia -- 03/15/2005
The Portland BMX Club kicked off its 2005 season in
challenging conditions on Saturday, with scattered showers
and strong winds providing some tough riding for riders.

A reasonable field of 17 riders competed, with Robbie Davies
and Ellen Gannon winning the under-14 boys and girls, the highest
age groups to compete on the day.

Club member Leanne Wilson said the club was fairly happy
with attendance on the day, but said it was still hoping to see
some new riders come down and give the sport a try.

"Our aim is to encourage new riders to the club,"
Wilson said.

"We are hoping with the new track and with the
State Championships this year we can get some
new riders along.

"At the moment the oldest riders we have are 14, and the youngest
is six, but in the past we have had riders who have raced on training
wheels.

"I think a lot of people don't realise we exist because
we are tucked up in the corner (at Alexandra Park).

"Also I don't think people realise you can make money out of
BMX racing, because when you turn 14 you can actually race
for prize money."

Wilson said the club was excited at having finally received permits
to begin construction on its new state level track, with construction
set to get under way some time this week.

"We have got our permits through now to revamp the track,
which will be great.

"Our next meeting is supposed to be the first Saturday of next month,
it will depend on how work progresses but, hopefully, we will be ready
by then."
