*** Wenatchee Area Prescribed Forest Burns Begins ***
Wenatchee, Washington -- 03/05/2005
The U.S. Forest Service lit a test fire Thursday for the first
of three prescribed forest burns they hope to begin in Chelan
County next week.
The site is in rugged Pendleton Canyon and reached by Forest
Service roads at the end of No. 2 Canyon, about eight miles
southwest of Wenatchee.
The Forest Service plans to burn 620 acres of slash left from
a timber sale and ground fuels to reduce the chance of an
uncontrolled fire during drier and hotter months, said Susan
Peterson, a spokeswoman for the Wenatchee River Ranger
District. Conditions permitting, the prescribed fire will be set
early next week.
Firefighters will burn a 100-foot-wide perimeter around the site
before igniting the interior. The burn will take four or five days,
Peterson said.
No more than 40 acres will be burned this week in the trial,
she said.
The Pendleton burn is one of three prescribed burns
the Forest Service hopes to ignite soon in Chelan County.
Next up is a 300-acre burn site up Sand Creek near Camas
Meadows. Sand Creek flows into Mission Creek south of
Cashmere. Another site is 115 acres near Lake Wenatchee,
in the Loop Hill area southeast of Fish Lake.
