*** City seeks opinions about scooters ***
Eugene, Oregon -- 08/11/2004
If you want to have a say in the debate over riding
motor-assisted scooters on Eugene's bike paths,
set aside some time Thursday to let your opinions
be known.
That's when city officials will listen
to people share their views on the subject.
Scooters ridden on the city's bike paths, especially the
gas-powered variety, have been generating complaints
about speed and noise, mostly from other trail users.
The City Council in June asked city staff to do more research
on the issue and come up with possible regulations for motor-assisted
scooters. As part of its research, the city will sponsor a forum at 7
p.m.
Thursday in the Campbell Community Center, 155 High St.
"The whole idea is to find out what the problem is, to collect
people's concerns, and to offer the council some suggestions
about what to do," said Diane Bishop, the city's bicycle and
pedestrian coordinator.
Bishop on Sunday planned to conduct a survey of Ruth Bascom
Riverbank Trail users. Among other things, she wants to know
what pedestrians and bicyclists think about motor-assisted
scooters on the paths. She also plans to ask motor-assisted
scooter users how they would be affected if they were banned
from using the paths.
A committee staffed by Bishop and other city officials is
scheduled to make its recommendations to the council on
Sept. 15.
