*** City Council approves laws for scooters ***

Seattle, Washington -- 07/08/2004
Anyone cruising on a motorized foot scooter in Seattle is now
required to wear a helmet and is prohibited from riding with a
passenger.

The City Council yesterday approved a list of laws for gas and
electric motorized scooters. The rules are designed to protect
pedestrians and reduce noise in neighborhoods.

The city ordinance distinguishes between noisy gas scooters,
the slower electrical scooters and Segways.

Segway riders are not required to wear helmets.

Gas scooters are required to have mufflers.
Both types are required to have brakes and lights.

According to reports, there were 5,900 accidents nationwide
last year involving motorized scooters. In most of the cases,
the scooters were ridden by children under 16 years old.

The council approved the new rules 8-0,
with Council President Jan Drago absent.
