*** Teen ran stop sign in scooter accident ***
Edinburgh, IN (AP) -- 07/03/2004
A 13-year-old girl riding her scooter through a Greenwood
neighborhood was not wearing a helmet when she was hit
by a dump truck.
The girl, whose name is not being released, was riding a
Razor scooter eastbound on Barcelona Road on Thursday
when she rode through a stop sign at Sheek Road, Capt.
David Payne said.
A Young Trucking dump truck heading
southbound on Sheek Road hit the girl.
Police believe she was heading to her
home in another subdivision, Payne said.
She was in and out of consciousness on
her way to Methodist Hospital, he said.
Indiana state law says anyone driving a motorized bicycle
must be at least 15 years of age, have an Indiana ID card
and wear a helmet and eye protection.
Payne said the girl’s scooter qualifies as a
motorized bicycle although it is electric powered.
The law also says a motorized bicycle
cannot be driven at a speed greater than 25 mph.
Investigators are not sure how fast she was going,
Payne said.
“This tragedy is an awakening for the family,”
he said
