*** Chelan Rotary's Century Challenge Is Big Success ***
Chelan, Washington -- 06/09/2004
Chelan Rotary’s inaugural Century Challenge, held on Saturday,
June 5th, was an unqualified success. Cyclists traveled hundreds
of miles to test their conditioning on this beautiful but challenging
course. They started during the morning rain showers and bucked
the afternoon winds but praised the beauty and wonders of the
Chelan Valley.
Nearly half the riders conquered the entire 100 miles climaxed
with the 7.3 mile grind up McNeil Canyon with pitches up to 19
percent. Their rewards were a breathtaking ride down the canyon
with spectacular views of the Chelan valley, lake and mountains.
One rider’s summation said it all: “I didn’t think my legs would
do it…but they did and the ride down and the beauty of the
other two loops made it all worthwhile.”
Other comments: “This is the best ride, by far, that I’ve ever done.”
“That Manson loop is so beautiful. I didn’t know those hills were
back there.” “The support was great…and this pasta feed (at the
Deepwater Brewery) is fantastic.” “I’ll be back next year for sure.”
”My favorite part was the Coulee loop and especially going down
through that tunnel.”
The procedes of the event will go to Rotary’s Polio Plus project
to help eradicate polio throughout the world. The date for next
year’s Challenge will be announced within the next several weeks
so watch for it on
