Seattle, Washington -- 05/18/2004
Police will be cracking down on anyone
riding a bike without a helmet in King County.
Studies show that too many riders are ignoring the law.
Health officials say only 60 percent of kids in the county are
wearing bike helmets. By the time they become teens, only
30 percent are using them.
So, police will be on the look out for those breaking the law.
"For the next month we're going to be talking to people who
aren't wearing helmets, and explaining to them what the law is,"
said Seattle Police Captain, Joseph Kessler.
Police will be giving out warnings until June 15th.
After that, anyone caught without a helmet can expect a $30 fine.
King County is the first county in the state with a bike helmet law.
