*** Festival director happy with Blossom turnout ***
Wenatchee, Washington -- 05/04/2004
The numbers behind the just completed Apple Blossom Festival
only tell part of the story - 134 grand parade entries on Saturday
and 167 food and arts and crafts vendors at Memorial Park over
the two-day weekend
"It's all about the weather. It can make or break a festival,"
said Darci Waterman, festival director. "We were fortunate this year."
Aside from a wind- and rain-filled afternoon last Tuesday,
the weather did cooperate during the 11-day festival, she said.
The Stemilt Growers Grand Parade, which had roughly the same
number of entries as a year ago, apparently drew a larger audience
this year, according to Waterman. She said people who ride in the
parade each year commented that the crowd appeared more dense
along the entire mile-long parade route.
The only blemish was a reported two-minute gap between entries
at one point during the parade. Waterman said the pause in action
might have been caused by a slow band. Parade organizers will meet
and try to figure out what went wrong so the mistake can be avoided
next year, she said.
About a dozen unclaimed chairs were seen along the Orondo Avenue
portion of the parade route this morning. A few food vendors were
also packing up their stands in Memorial Park as a man with a metal
detector scanned the grass for change or any other treasures left
behind by festival-goers.
The Les Schwab Classy Chassis Parade on Friday also drew a
big crowd of car enthusiasts to East Wenatchee. This year's car
parade had 195 entries, up for 180 last year, making it the largest
in the 19-year history of the event.
