*** BMX Biker Could Be Olympic Star ***
Wigan, UK --
Competition at the Olympics could be more than just
a dream for one Wigan youngster after an astonishing
display in a national championship.
BMX starlet Jacob Roberts had already bagged all the
trophies available to him this season, and followed up his
success with a dominating ride at the British Championships,
leading the race from start to finish.
And his run of top form has already set tongues wagging
about medal prospects for the London Olympics in 2012.
BMX makes its Olympic debut in Beijing, China, next year
, which is a little soon for 12-year old Jacob, from Ashton.
But when London comes around he'll be 17, and sponsors
are already queuing up to be associated with him.
His latest sponsorship deal is with clothing company Vans.
His mum Diane Sutton said there was barely room in
the car for the trophies after the Cantsfield High pupil
added the British Championships, held in Burnham-on-Sea,
Somerset, to the National Series he had already won.
She added: "It was a fantastic ride and he
beat boys who were much bigger than him.
"He's achieved so much already but I think his focus
now is on the Olympics. "He gets teased for the dedication
he shows to his riding, but it's really starting to pay off now."
Diane said Jacob had already been approached by
representatives from the Olympic Talent Team who
see him as a potential medal hope for London.
He has been inspired by the successes of fellow biking
talent Shanaze Reade who has three World, eight European
and five British BMX championships at junior levels.
Diane said: "Jake has ridden with Shanaze and she's
an example of what he could achieve. She's a real gold
medal hope for next year's Olympics and has done it all
at the junior levels.
"I think Jake's got it in him to go all the way.
The season's finished until next April now so
it's more up to him to keep up with his training,
and he's really determined to do it.
"He's probably got about 25 trophies now.
There's no room for them in the house, they'll
have to go in the attic."
Jacob is a member of the Mid-Lancs BMX club,
which meets at Coppull, near Chorley.
The club also boasts three other national champions
– Jack Clarke, Paddy Sharrock and Mike Pardon.
