*** BMX Riders Vow To Protect Track ***

Peterborough, UK --
BMX riders were left reeling this morning after
discovering diggers had ploughed through their
beloved track in Stanground.

Horrified riders – some of who had spent 11 years
building the site in Stanground, Peterborough – were
mortified to find a giant gouge had been levelled
through a series of jumps.

They say the track has become a haven for BMX
enthusiasts, with many coming from places as far
away as Cambridge, Ipswich and London to use it.

It is based in woodland near warehousing
units off the Fletton Parkway, in Stanground.

They are now vowing to stand in the way of the
diggers if work continues to prevent them from
causing any more damage.

BMX rider Barry Christie said: "The track is
out of the way and is like a sanctuary for us.

"We don't want to have to use a track built in the
middle of a housing estate where children can throw
bricks at us.

"We will stand in the way of the diggers.

"People come from all over to use this track."

He said he was unsure as to why the diggers were
at the site, but one theory was that it may be connected
with building work associated with a Stanground bypass.

Sam Moreland (26), from Stanground,
was left gutted after discovering the damage.

He began digging out mounds – or jumps – about 11
years ago, but today was left shocked after discovering
years of work had been damaged in one swoop.

He said: "They have damaged a few key lines and
jumps. I have been building this for 11 years now.

"For me BMX riding is a passion, but it
is also more than that, it is a way of life.

"I don't know what I would be doing if it wasn't for this."

The site is hidden away behind some trees
and consists of around six to seven jumps.

Riders claim about 40 people use it on a regular basis.

The BMX riders are now calling for Peterborough
City Council to provide them with a new facility.

It is unclear at this stage exactly who the diggers belong to.
