Grizzlie nation relax. Understand that everyone is worked up due to
the discussion about players circumstances and moving on to the next
level. I will let everyone know that I play for Gateway because the
fans are amazing and it's convenient for my wife, kids, and me. My
only two goals are #1. To sign with an affiliate and #2. Win a
championship (to get the exposure to sign with an affiliate.) I am a
ball player in and out. It's my life. I coach it, instruct it, and
play it year round. It is serious business for my family and me.
Mark my words,"unless I get injured I will return to affiliated ball
with or without Gateway and succeed at it, knock on wood." Hopefully
with gateway though. Ben you are correct when you say many players
are not ready for the next level and the scout is correct when he
says many players want to just get their and thats it, but I have
been there twice and I have been preparing myself physically and
mentally to reach and stay at the major league level for the past 2
years. Last year was my comeback year to reaquiant myself with the
game, but this year everyone needs to lookout because it going down.
I pray that the rest of the players that sign with gateway take it as
serious as me. I learned alot from players on the team last year
especially Patterson and I look forward to helping lead this team to
a Championship in 06. Nothing else matters, NOTHING. To a Gateway
Championship in 06,(Cheers).
Ben, get at me in traffic.

Bergy,
You couldnt insult me sir.. I was just trying to make a point to the
2 guys wanting to get paid more. I know the criteria you set is
different, I just think that the level of play in the league would
need to improve before any of the players could be "ready" for AA
or better. There arent a lot of Diamonds in the rough in the FL. The
guys that devote themselves to baseball every summer and get paid
alot, get paid alot because they are more consistent against high
level competition. If your not, people arent cheating you, and
either you displayed that in high school, college, or maybe even
minor league baseball the level you were playing was too high, you
struggled and now your bitter because your in the FL making the
league minnimum. Dont get BITTER, get BETTER-then youll get paid!
Benji
ALL,
One more thing, this is not a message of disrespect to all those guys
in the league who did well. but if you are good at all, you should do
well in the FL. If your too talented for this league, domination of
the FL is xpected

We are one of the last clubs to put more of an emphasis on younger players and are really big on developing them ourself. Since I've only been with two clubs (Padres and Braves) in 10 years I can only tell you that the Padres and Braves are like opposites. The Padres have a more active role in taking older players. We try to move the "kids" up. I wish I had more say but I don't. All I can do is recommend and do the reports. And I HAVE recommended players...just we haven't needed anyone at the time.

I can tell you from a scouts point of view...Most all players that we have interest in have to be able to step right in to AA and play. That's what my boss has told me. Now if there's a need for a "fill" player and the club needs him right away due to injuries or move-ups...then there may be an exception.
I also can tell you that the Grizzlies treat their players very well. There's nothing that they need to apologize for. For a player chasing their dream...still holding out hope...there's few organizations like Gateway.

Some teams dont even offer host families. Before I came to the Grizzlies last year I had $420 a month taken out of my check for room and board. Just an example of how the grizzlies take care of there players: I was trying to get in and see a Doctor jst two weeks ago, but as many of you know its very hard to do if you dont have a family doctor. I called Geof Manzo a person affilated with the

Some people actually still play for the love of the game. Yes I would love nothing more than to get paid a little more, but the only way to get that is to produce on the field. As for the comments about Gateway not moving any players on to higher levels, there are scouts at every game and i know for a fact that every team in major league baseball team has a scout that covers the Frontier League. If you have concerns about players and the way they are treated then you need to talk with a player. There may be some players that are unhappy, but Im willing to bet that the majority of us are very happy. Manzo thanks again for getting me in to see the Doc.

Greetings!
How is everyone out there in Grizzlies Land? Apparently there are a couple of individuals who are not so happy. What gives gatewaygriz? Why so disgruntled incog?
As a member of the on-field staff for three, going on four years now, I am here to set the record straight. The players are taken care of. The booster club has gone above and beyond to support the players. Even when there has been a few spoiled, ungreatful individuals the boosters have supplied the clubhouse with food and supplies. As far as health issues are concerned, the boosters have bent over backwards to supply these athletes with money to purchase splints, braces, and prescription meds even when the situation was not a workers compensation issue.
It is unfortunate that these athletes are not paid top dollar to play baseball. Then again Independent ball does not have the merchandising and network deals that the big league clubs have. The players are provided with transportation, hotels, and meal money. Meal money is not a lot, but at least they get to eat. Besides, if they want more money and better perks then they need to continue to work hard and produce on the field so they can get to the next level.
So Mr. Incog and Gatewaygriz I am calling you out. Did you take advantage of Tony Funderburg's offer to come in and speak about these issues. I imagine you haven't. If you are not part of the solution then you are part of the problem.
Good day.

I will put good money down that incog and the other guy are former players. I would actually put more than money. I have met many disgruntled players in my day, and they sound the part.
Anyone that knocks the boosters has no brain. Out of everywhere I have been, NO ONE takes care of players like the Funderburgs do. There isn't even a close second.

Let's get to the point about how minor league baseball works...
It's show business mixed with baseball...
I'm sure Tony doesn't need national tv appearances to feel good about the job he does... but his job is to fill stands first.. then Frontier League titles are nice after that... he continues to keep the Grizzlies experience fresh... in other places it would be "yesterday's fad" already for the less than hard core fans...
It's up to players to put up good numbers to have a chance at bigger things.. Tony Funderburg doesn't have to make like a college SID promoting a player's Heisman chances... in the internet era... a kid with good stuff will be found out whether there is a scout looking at him in person
or not.... in fact baseball scouting departments are getting more and more done without scouts on the road...
The Grizzly Burger publicity is a coup for the team and it's good for the players.. because it's good for them to play before a packed house.. and a more successful organization gets more attention for the players....

To be fair, the only guy who got picked up from Mid-Missouri was Pete
Eberhart. He was signed by a scout that knew him from college, not
from anything he did with the Mavericks. He had actually been
struggling with our team. A spot opened up in the Blue Jays system
and they knew him and signed him. The only player that scouts
actually came to see on our team was 19 year old Dantibo. But there
aren't too many 19 year olds in the league that are hitting 94 mph
with a good split. It's too bad he acted younger than 19.

Is Skip as big a goof as seems on TV and radio?
Take it easy,

Hey how does it feel to have 2 and a half hours of work each day?
You know I have more lessons tomorrow than your whole facility does?
Ha. Must be nice my friend. But what can I expect, you are a pitcher
and three hours a day probably overwhlmes you seeing that you guys
only work once a week anyways...
