The Cardinals' organization report in this week's Baseball America
magazine is about these three:

Independent Relief

St. LOUIS - Bereft of pitching depth, the Cardinals dipped into the
independent Frontier League and added three pitchers to their system.

The team purchased the contracts of righthanders Adam Jahnsen, Dave
Klahs and Dan Smith, who helped the Gateway Grizzlies win the
Frontier League championship in 2003.

The Grizzlies, based less than five minutes from St. Louis in Sauget,
Ill., were managed by Danny Cox, who pitched for the Cardinals and
three other big league clubs during his 11-year major league career.

"That's fantastic for those guys," Cox said. "That's what it's all
about. Those guys did a great job for myself and everybody in the
organization. I'm glad to see them go there."

Klahs and Smith were assigned to high Class A Palm Beach, while
Jahnsen will be invited to major league camp in the spring in
Jupiter, Fla.

Cox recommended the pitchers to farm director Bruce Manno.

"I talked to Bruce and basically told him I had three guys I think
can pitch for him, so he ended up taking my word on it and signing
them," Cox said. "He knows that I've played the game and understand
pitching."

"I think they're going to help them out. I have a feeling you're
going to see two of them in the show with the Cardinals."

Jahnsen, 22, was 5-3, 3.96 in the regular season and 2-0, 1.69 in the
playoffs. He threw a one-hit shutout against Evansville in Game Two
of the FL Championship Series. He also fired the first no-hitter in
the three-year history of the Grizzlies.

klahs, 22, was named the MVP of the championship series after
pitching 2 2/3 inning s of one-hit relief in Gateway's 10-9 win in 12
innings against Evansville in Game Three. He had a win and three
saves in four postseason appearances after going 2-3, 2.02 with eight
saves in the regular season.

Smith, 24, was 2-0, 2.75 with a franchise record 15 saves.

Cos said he will continue to recommend his top players to the
Cardinals. "I bleed red," Cox said.

CARDINALS ORGANIZATION INKS GRIZZLIES PITCHING TRIO
The Gateway Grizzlies announced today that the St. Louis Cardinals Organization
has purchased the contracts of three Grizzlies pitchers. The contracts of
right-handers Dave Klahs, Dan Smith, and Adam Jahnsen have all been sold to the
Cardinals. All three players were classified as rookies during the 2003 season.
Both Klahs and Smith had been with Major League organizations prior to coming to
the Grizzlies. Klahs was with the Yankees' rookie affiliate in Tampa, FL, while
Smith was with the Detroit Tigers' single-A affiliate in West Michigan.

Klahs, 22, finished the regular season second on the team with eight saves. The
Fenton, Mo. native had a record of 2-3 and an earned run average of 2.02. Klahs
picked up a win and three saves in four post-season appearances. He had a save
and a win in the Frontier League Championship series, earning MVP honors for the
series.

Smith, 24, finished tops on the club and third in the league with 15 saves, one
shy of the Grizzlies all-time record. Smith had a record of 2-0 and an ERA of
2.75 to go along with the 15 saves. The Bonne Terre, Mo. native tossed three and
one-third shut out innings in the final game of the Frontier League Championship
Series.

Jahnsen, 22, finished the regular season with a record of 5-3 and ERA of 3.96.
Jahnsen tossed the first no-hitter in Grizzlies history on August 14 in a 4-0
shutout of the Kenosha Mammoths. Jahnsen, originally from Robertsville, Mo., was
2-0 with a 1.69 earned run average in the post-season. He tossed a one-hit
shutout in game two of the Championship Series.

The three were signed after Cardinals' Director of Player Development Bruce
Manno consulted Grizzlies manager and former Cardinals pitcher Danny Cox for
player recommendations.

"I am extremely happy for these guys," Cox said. I believe they can pitch in the
Cardinals system. I want to give them (the Cardinals) some players that I see,
that maybe they don't."

Despite pitching for four major league teams, Cox said he remains loyal to the
Cardinals organization.

"Of course there are some ties there," he said. "I bleed red. It would be great
to see these guys pitching in the big leagues, in a Cardinals uniform some day."

Klahs and Smith have each been assigned to the Cardinals single-A affiliate in
Palm Beach, Fla. Jahnsen has not been assigned but will likely be in spring
training this upcoming season. The Grizzlies retain the rights to all three
pitchers, should the Cardinals release them.

The Gateway Grizzlies, 2003 Frontier League Champions, will begin their fourth
season in May, 2004. Season tickets are currently on sale and available by
calling the Grizzlies at 618-337-3000, or visiting GMC Stadium.

This article was in the St. Louis Post this morning. Pretty good read. BTW I was
at the game with the "bag" incident. It was hilarious.

Cox is still fiery as manager of Grizzlies
Rick Hummel
09/11/2003

Righthander Danny Cox has been in three World Series, winning one with the
Toronto Blue Jays and losing two when he was with the Cardinals. That downside
included the 1985 Series when Cox probably would have been the Most Valuable
Player if the Cardinals had not encountered a few problems in the ninth inning
of Game 6 in Kansas City.

But he says what he is doing now -- managing the Gateway Grizzlies, champions of
the Frontier League -- is every bit as important.

"If we win it all, I'll wear this ring as proudly as all the other rings," Cox
said before Thursday night's game in Evansville, Ind., which the Grizzlies won
10-9 in 12 innings for a sweep of the best-of-five series. "This means as much
to me as when I played.

"I don't know what the motivation of all the players is. But I told them, 'This
is where you are in your life. If you never go anywhere else in baseball ... if
you can win it here, you'll always have that.' That's where I am in my life,
also."

Cox retired in 1995 after 11 big-league seasons. He signed on as pitching coach
with the Grizzlies before their inaugural season in 2001. After two seasons as a
coach, Cox became manager.

"When you're winning, it's definitely a lot of fun," Cox said.

Cox had been counseled by his former manager and longtime hunting partner,
Whitey Herzog.

"He said, 'Just relax, you'll do fine,'" Cox said. "I took his advice. Just go
hard and believe in your players."

There wasn't a time when Cox didn't go hard, loyal always to his team and his
family. For one thing, he pitched virtually his whole career with a throbbing
elbow but said little about it.

Once, as a brawl broke out between the Cardinals and the San Francisco Giants,
Cox was in street clothes in the stands, charting pitches as the next night's
hurler. Before the skirmish was over, Cox had dashed into the clubhouse, changed
into his uniform and made it onto the field.

On another occasion, Cox was pitching in Shea Stadium, hard by LaGuardia
Airport, when New York Mets slugger George Foster was being his dilatory self,
stepping out of the batter's box every time a plane flew overhead. Cox,
disgusted, hit Foster in the rump. Unfortunately that loaded the bases for
Cardinals menace Howard Johnson, who hit a grand slam, but Cox had made his
point.

Just as he made his point at Warner Robins Air Force Base during the last week
of the 1985 season. Cox, who the night before had virtually clinched the
division title by beating the Mets, had asked Herzog's permission to take care
of some family business in Georgia. The family business was that Cox felt that
his former brother-in-law had been hassling his sister and mother.

Cox was back in uniform that night at Busch Stadium. There had been reports of a
fight near the base in Macon, Ga. Cox acknowledged that there had been. "Two
punches. Both by me," he had said. "Sometimes, a man's got to do what a man's
got to do."

Just as when Cox felt his Gateway team had been wronged by a call at the end of
the first game of a doubleheader this summer in Sauget. The base umpire had
called a Gateway runner - the tying run - out for leaving third base too soon.

Before the second game, a still-angry Cox carried his lineup card out while
wearing a bag over his head. The umpiring crew took a dim view of that gambit
and the second game started without him. Cox also is steadfast, adamant even, in
his belief that the Frontier League is legitimate stuff.

"This is not just a summer league where the guys sit around drinking beer. It's
professional baseball and that's how I treat it," Cox said.

I "talked" to Tymber via e-mail in the early spring. He told me that
he had talked to several agents and scouts during the off season and
they had all told him that at his age, he needed to be in at least
Double A affiliated ball to have any chance at The Show. In the
meantime, he had landed a good job with a bright future back home in
Wichita. He had to make a choice. He is missed. Just think how
good this year's team would have been with Tymber in the starting
rotation.

For anyone not there tonight you missed a great game. I am thinking about going
to Evansville on Friday if the series is still going. Hopefully the trip won't
be necessary. I'm wondering if the Grizzlies are planning any kind of
celebration when they win the championship.

GRIZZLIES EDGE OTTERS IN CHAMPIONSHIPS OPENER

The Grizzlies slipped past the Evansville Otters 2-1 Monday night to take a 1-0
advantage in the best-of-five Frontier League Championship series.

The Grizzlies got a pair of two-out, RBI hits from Oscar Vargas and outstanding
pitching performance from starter Scott Patterson.

Vargas drove in Phil Warren in the second inning to put the Grizzlies up 1-0. He
drove in Warren again in the fourth to make it 2-0.

The only run Evansville scored came on a lead-off home run by Carlos Brackley in
the ninth inning.

Patterson went the first 7 1/3 innings, without yielding a run on seven hits. He
struck out nine. He earned the win, his first of the post-season. Dave Klahs
pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing the run on the home run. He struck out
four, to earn his third save of the post-season.

The Grizzlies and Otters will continue the series with game two Tuesday night at
GMC Stadium. Tickets remain for the game and are available by calling the
Grizzlies at 618-337-3000. Game time is 7:05.

Evansville heads to finals
Simpson shuts down Chillicothe
On Saturday night, the Evansville Otters beat the Chillicothe Paints 3-0 to take
the deciding game of the best-of-three series at Chillicothe's V.A. Memorial
Stadium. Evansville starter Andre Simpson went the distance for the Otters,
allowing only three hits and striking out nine. The big blow for Evansville was
Juan Downing's fifth-inning solo home run. Terrence McClain and Carlos Brackley
added RBI singles to round out the scoring. The Otters advance to the Frontier
League Championship Series where they will face the Gateway Grizzlies, who swept
their series with the Washington Wild Things on Thursday. It will be the third
trip to the finals for Evansville. The Otters fell to Johnstown in 2001 and
Canton in 1997. The first game of the best-of-five Championship Series will be
Monday night at Gateway's GMC Stadium with the first pitch slated for 7:05 p.m.
CDT.

I was at the game Thursday night. Didn't get a chance to get on the
computer before I left so didn't know who all was going to be there.
I do plan on being there for the championship series. Hopefully when
we find out when it starts we can arrange a meeting spot for those of
us that are going.

Sorry it has taken so long to reply. My computer sucks. I am not sure
what happened to Tymber Lee. You could probably go to the Grizzlies
website and email someone in the office.

Again it was Tony Coyne with a two-run double. That made it 4-3. The
Grizzlies added a run in the eighth on an RBI-double by Oscar
Vargas, before the capped off the scoring in the ninth. Coyne led
off the ninth with a single, before Todd Oetting launched a long
