GREAT NEWS GRIZZLIES FANS!!
DANNY COX WILL RETURN TO GRIZZLIES HELM IN 2004
It was announced today that former major leaguer Danny Cox will return for his
second season as the club's field manager in 2004. It will be his fourth season
with the club, after spending the first two seasons as the pitching coach. 2004
will be the first season the Grizzlies have had the same manger in consecutive
seasons.
In 2003 Cox led the Grizzlies to a 50-38 record and their first-ever Frontier
League title in the team's first playoff appearance. It was the first time in
their three-year history that the Grizzlies had finished with a record above
.500. Cox finished second in the Frontier League's Manager of the Year voting.
"I'm looking forward to doing it all again," Cox said. "I'm looking forward to
the warm weather, the challenge involved in repeating, all of the intangibles
that make this job so enjoyable."
Cox is a veteran of 11 major league seasons, including six as a St. Louis
Cardinal. He began his career in 1983 with the redbirds, where he appeared in
two World Series (1985 and 1987). Cox later pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates,
Philadelphia Phillies, and Toronto Blue Jays, where he was a member of Toronto's
World Championship team in 1993. Cox appeared in 278 games, including 174
starts, finishing with a record of 74-75, an earned run average of 3.64, 723
career strikeouts and eight saves.
Cox said the decision to return to the Grizzlies was not a difficult one.
"The atmosphere here is great," Cox said. "This is a great place to manage. I'm
close to home and close to my family. I manage some good young men, plus I work
with great owners and a great front office."
"We are very excited to have Danny back in a Grizzlies uniform," Grizzlies
General Manager Tony Funderburg said. "He has been a huge part of this
organization since the very beginning. Danny will always be welcome within our
organization."
Though no other coaches have been finalized, the entire staff is expected to
return. Tim Mueth is the Grizzlies Director of Player Personnel, and will likely
return as hitting coach. Neil Fiala, head coach at Southwestern Illinois
College, will likely return as bench coach during home games. Nick Jakich and
Dean Neuner are expected to return as well.
The Grizzlies will begin defense of their Frontier League title when their
fourth season begins May 21 at River City.
Don't miss out on another exciting season of baseball! Ticket packages and group
outings are currently on sale, and can be purchased by visiting GMC Stadium, or
calling the Grizzlies office at 618-337-3000.
Until Next time...
