The Cardinals' organization report in this week's Baseball America
magazine is about these three:
Independent Relief
St. LOUIS - Bereft of pitching depth, the Cardinals dipped into the
independent Frontier League and added three pitchers to their system.
The team purchased the contracts of righthanders Adam Jahnsen, Dave
Klahs and Dan Smith, who helped the Gateway Grizzlies win the
Frontier League championship in 2003.
The Grizzlies, based less than five minutes from St. Louis in Sauget,
Ill., were managed by Danny Cox, who pitched for the Cardinals and
three other big league clubs during his 11-year major league career.
"That's fantastic for those guys," Cox said. "That's what it's all
about. Those guys did a great job for myself and everybody in the
organization. I'm glad to see them go there."
Klahs and Smith were assigned to high Class A Palm Beach, while
Jahnsen will be invited to major league camp in the spring in
Jupiter, Fla.
Cox recommended the pitchers to farm director Bruce Manno.
"I talked to Bruce and basically told him I had three guys I think
can pitch for him, so he ended up taking my word on it and signing
them," Cox said. "He knows that I've played the game and understand
pitching."
"I think they're going to help them out. I have a feeling you're
going to see two of them in the show with the Cardinals."
Jahnsen, 22, was 5-3, 3.96 in the regular season and 2-0, 1.69 in the
playoffs. He threw a one-hit shutout against Evansville in Game Two
of the FL Championship Series. He also fired the first no-hitter in
the three-year history of the Grizzlies.
klahs, 22, was named the MVP of the championship series after
pitching 2 2/3 inning s of one-hit relief in Gateway's 10-9 win in 12
innings against Evansville in Game Three. He had a win and three
saves in four postseason appearances after going 2-3, 2.02 with eight
saves in the regular season.
Smith, 24, was 2-0, 2.75 with a franchise record 15 saves.
Cos said he will continue to recommend his top players to the
Cardinals. "I bleed red," Cox said.
