LAWRENCE GOES TO YANKEES
The Gateway Grizzlies announced today that the contract of outfielder Horace
Lawrence III has been purchased by the New York Yankees Organization. Lawrence
becomes the sixth Grizzlies player to move on to a Major League Organization.
Lawrence, a native of Richmond, CA, left from Rockford today to return to
Sauget. Lawrence will join the Yankees affiliate in the New York-Penn League,
the Staten Island Yankees.
"I am extremely excited for him," Grizzlies manager Danny Cox said. "It's a
chance in a lifetime to continue playing baseball at a higher level. I wish him
the best."
In 27 games with the Grizzlies, Lawrence was second in the Frontier League with
a .374 batting average, and lead the team with four home runs and 19 RBIs. He
was also fourth in the league with a .607 slugging percentage.
"The Yankees are the most elite team in the Majors and to be part of that
organization is unreal," Lawrence said. "I am happy to represent the Frontier
League and the Grizzlies in affiliated baseball."
Former Grizzlie Moves Up. . .
Former Gateway Grizzlies player Brian Sellier was promoted to Triple-A
Sacramento Wednesday. The Sacramento River Cats are the Triple-A affiliate of
the Oakland Athletics, playing in the Pacific Coast League. Sellier was promoted
after hitting .303 with 6 home runs and 44 RBIs for the Double-A Midland
Rockhounds of the Texas League. Sellier led the Grizzlies with a .332 average, 6
triples and 11 home runs in 2001. His .332 average was good for sixth in the
league.
