Subject: [GallowayDaytona] Detroit
Despite the bad rap that Detroit gets for, well...
being Detroit - they put on once heck of a marathon.
Other than bucking an occassional strong headwind, the
weather was perfect. The route meandered through the
historic downtown areas and tree-lined neighborhoods
keeping shade plentiful. There was enough water and
gatorade to fill Seaworld and the fans and musical
groups were numerous. Even the cops that were there
to divert traffic cheered us on. I was trying to beat
my last time (which I didn't do) but with the varied
scenery and "spirit spots" as they were called, it all
went by fast. At the end of the race, I got a medal
that was so heavy, it made my neck hurt. They also
handed everyone a bag of food. I don't know if this
was all in response to what happened in Chicago or if
this is the way it's always been done, but they did a
fantastic job. It was a great way to say "Detroit -
were not just for crack addicts anymore".
I want to thank the group as a whole because if it
wasn't for the Galloway program and all the support
from friends I've made over the past few years - this
day and my two previous marathons would have never
happened.
Cheers!
Brigid
