Sailed wearing my shortie a couple weeks ago when we had the warm
weather.... man-o-man, did that ever feel good!! Course, I went
back to the 5/3 full suit when it got cold again. Don't have a
problem sailing cold east winds in winter, 'cept when the ice
freezes my boom to the sail and my hands freeze to the boom... hate
it when that happens !! (alright, that was a joke : )

Sailable east winds this morning, missed 'em because I was working.
Got some puffy west winds right now.... if it get's any better, I'll
go out there.

I used to think 56F water was cold - but now that I have the right
gear it is downright balmy. 5/3 wetsuit, high-top booties, and
ProMotion "exo" beanie has kept me really comfortable lately. I've
even ditched the hood and the gloves as the water got above 55F.

True, that's why folks came off the water late Friday afternoon at
Celilo.... many complained of the cold temps. Only the hardy Canadians
and winter Gorge sailors were out enjoying the 4.2 conditions.

Don't forget the cold weather factor. I know of a fair amount of
people who passed on the weekend because of the cooler temperatures,
less than ideal wind forecast, and the gas prices.

Made the gamble and drove out to Roosevelt on Saturday after kayaking
the Lower Klickitat. By about 3:30, the wind picked up to 4.7 and I
finished the day on a 4.2 Would have stayed on Sunday but I had
family coming into Hood River, so I sailed Doug's. After leaving
directions to them on how to get to Doug's they showed up
there.....allowing me an extra hour of sailing :) Yesterday, I biked
near White Salmon.

On Monday I showed up at Mosier around 11 am. There was one red Dodge
truck in the parking lot. It was a kiter and he was getting ready to
lauch on the beach. We setup windsurfing gear on the edge of the
parking lot. As we were getting done a transient looking guy walked
by with a dog. He had a black retractable leash.

When we took our gear down to the water, he headed back into the
parking lot. Later we found that the kiter had the rear window of his
truck pushed in and his wallet stolen. There was a 9 meter kite in
the front seat which had been pulled through the window and left in
the back of the truck.

He did not mess with my car which was not even locked.

Just a warning to watch for strange people who would just love to have
some of your stuff.

$3.20 a gallon for gas certainly doesn't help to motivate folks to
drive around all day in search of a few puffs on Sunday. Saturday
was much better at Rowena, great 4.2 conditions early that got even
better in the afternoon.... not many people sailing. Friday
evening was really nice 4.2 conditions at Celilo.... very few people
out.

I got out for a couple hours yesterday at Maryhill. As I drove out, I
saw a few sails at Rowena, Dougs, and Celilo - but awfully skimpy
turnout for Memorial Day Weekend. Wonder where everyone was?

Current at Maryhill was about 3.5MPH according to my GPS. It was
enough to make me a little dizzy as a schlogged into shore one time.
Swells were nice while the wind lasted - which abruptly died around 4PM.

I agree with your prognosis. I'm going to wait until Sunday for my
weekend outing. Probably have to head east to get clear of the
clouds and less gusty conditions.

Sunday is supposed to be slightly better, cloud-wise. I am going down
but I have other things to get done so it is not a wasted trip for me if
it does not blow.

Gorge wind being what it's been, I wouldn't bet anything on it. Good
news is snow in the mountains, which gives yet another option. I
hope to score a triple on Saturday.... ski early AM sesh, mtn. bike
nooner sesh, then sailing eastern Gorge sesh later in the
afternoon. Course, this is all subject to change as conditions
change.

Anybody got any bets on wind in the Gorge this weekend? Gorge's
forecast is looking good for Sat & Sun, but Windance's forecaster says
Friday will see better winds with just 10-20 on Sat & Sun. Both agree
that further east will be best. I'm trying to figure if I want to make
the 3+ hour drive, or stay at home to save gas $$ and fulfill social
obligations instead.

Got my wind fix today at the Hatchery - only two sails on the water.
Was a bit flukey, but had some good rides using 5.7m + 120L
combination. Sailed for two hours, then the rain came again and shut
things down. Now I should be able to make it until the weekend.

By the way, thanks for all the good non-wind tips. The Gorge is an
amazing place - my favorite non-wind outing is hiking/wading Oneta
Gorge - great to do on a really hot day.

As a heads up, WHoop De Do has parts closed off for logging. Syncline
is great for a pre-Doug's ride since you can see the wind the entire
time and turn around if need be.

Hoping it picks up by Saturday for the weekend.

Yup, there are lots of great rides near the gorge.  Post Canyon and the WhoopDeeDoo, as well as Catherine Creek and parts of Hospital Hill ("nice climb" - ha!).  Also Knebal Springs, Deschutes River, and some forest road/dual track stuff in the Simcoes area.

Don't forget about a little hiking if the wind isn't blowing.  Rowena Crest, Deschutes Park, Dog/Hamilton Mountain, plus the large number of up-the-side-of-the-gorge trails available on both sides of the river.

While we tend to focus on whitecaps and swell all the time, don't ignore the spectacular region we live in (or visit) when the weather doesn't cooperate.

There are many great mountain bike trails but some of the mutual favorites are Post Canyon (there is the Loop that has a playground of bridges at the top) and Wooptee trails on the Oregon side and then Syncline, Catherine Creek and Hospital Hill (nice climb) on the Washington side.  Syncline has alternate routes in varying difficulties.  Just be quick to get out of your clips.

Have fun.

Me too. But Bart says the wind will come first and then rain again.

I hear ya, I'm in Eugene and we get 3 or maybe 4 windy days a month and
I'm lucky if I can get half of those on my days off, so when I hear
someone bellyaching about not sailing for 3 whole days I don't have an
ounce of sympathy.

Anyway, speaking of mountain biking in the gorge...where are good trails
to check out?  I've heard a lot of people talk about it but never
actually been, and now that I just bought a new bike I'm ready to hit
the trail.

Hey now, there's other activities in the Gorge besides windsurfing
to keep the stoke going. Just got back from a hike up Dog
Mountain... Balsom Root blooms are at their peek this week. Also.
lots of whitewater flowing in the rivers... great time for yaking or
rafting.... and mountain bike season is in full operation.

Alright... not quite the same stoke factor as doin' big airtime....
but at least it's something to do besides going nuts.

Does anyone know of any online water quality data for the Columbia
River? I have no idea how clean (or not) the water is.
