Memorial Park Work Party July 10th
We are going to need a good turnout for the July 10th Memorial Park work party.
Please tell your friends and help get the word out. Once again, the weather
forecasters are predicting a chance of rain. You can call Clay's mobile phone
(713-826-5307) no sooner than 8:30 AM if the trail conditions are questionable
to determine if the trail party will be held. Attendees should bring the tools
necessary to remove face slappers (trimmers, hand saws, and etc.) and fix mud
holes (shovels, rakes, and etc.). We will meet at the soccer field parking lot
at 9:00am. If you race, get your 2005 PayDirt work early.

trails. They visited over 60 trails in Texas in 2003 alone! Come hear about
their adventures and concepts about better trail building! The meeting starts at

ride, so let's go urban on our mountain bikes. Plan on meeting at the soccer

are welcome and nobody will be left behind.

Thanks to All Who Came to the Skills Clinic! We hope you had a fun time despite
the 106 heat index and damp grass. Double thanks to those of you and helped out
or taught at the clinic. We couldn't have done it without you.
It looks like the skills clinic was a success. We covered all of our expenses,
signed up some new members to GHORBA, made some money for trail/bridge building
and most importantly had some fun and laughs. Sounds like a great day in my
book.
GHORBA to hold a ladies ride at Memorial Park We had a great turnout of ladies
at the skills clinic this past weekend. Way to go, girls!!! Several of the
ladies expressed an interest in an organized ladies ride.
Since the weather is not cooperating for a ride tonight, let's meet next
Wednesday, June 30. Be ready to roll at 6:30pm from the parking lot by the
soccer fields. If the trails are closed we will do an Urban Ride. All levels of
riders are welcome and NO ONE will be left behind.
Make sure to bring plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated

and work until noon or when the bridge is finished. Please sign in on the
volunteer sheet so the park gets credit for your hours. Richard will have
PayDirt forms, as well. Richard said to ride out and meet him at bridge 5.
Cypresswood News: This past Monday, Jerry, Candice, Sam, Melanie and Dean
worked about 2 hours clearing some overgrowth at Cypresswood trails. They would
like to pick up where they left off, and would like to reroute the section near
the end, with all the fallen pines, and all the mud holes, and are requesting
more help. Melanie is going to see about getting trail work qualified for pay
dirt, but trail work parties are exciting and rewarding enough already. If you'd
like to be more involved, please email Jerry (jerryg98@...) or the yahoo
group (cypresswoodtrailgroup@yahoogroups.com).
They will meet again next Monday at 6PM at the trail head.
GHORBA will be hosting KID'S CLINIC for inner city youth at Memorial Park on

"I rode JB today and the trails are in great condition. Anyone riding
Tomorrow? I haven't ridden out there in about two months and I have
to take my hat off to everyone who has been working on the trails and
building the stunts. JB's trails by far are the best in the entire
Houston area. Great job!"

Talking racing strategies with Ned Overend, hanging with Marla Streb, riding
the rockiest trail I've ever seen, brainstorming with mountain bike advocates
from all over the U.S. and lobbying Texas State Representatives and Senators on
Capital Hill for money to aid off-road trails. It was all part of the 2004 IMBA
Advocacy Summit in Washington D.C. this past weekend. It was an awesome,
amazing time! We've brought back great ideas, pictures and wonderful memories.

BikeHouston is helping to coordinate a "Ride of Silence" in the Bayou City
to honor cyclists who had their lives cut short pursuing the sport they
loved.
Hundreds of cyclists across Houston are expected to participate in this
silent ride, scheduled for May 19, to raise awareness of the proper rules
of the road that need to be followed by motorists and cyclists alike.
The Houston contingent is one of several Rides of Silence taking place
across the country in memory of those who have been killed in accidents on
America's roadways. The ride is free to all participants, who are asked to
dress in black or red in memory of those cyclists who have been involved in
a bike/auto accident, and ride in silence at a pace of 12 miles per hour.
The Houston ride will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Houston Zoo parking
lot in Hermann Park.
The first Ride of Silence took place last year at White Rock Lake in Dallas
and drew 1,000 cyclists. It was organized by cycling coach Chris Phelan
after a cycling friend died after he was hit by the mirror of a passing
bus. The event has spread to 37 cities across the country this year.

2004 Collegiate MTB Finals Coby James GHORBA Board
University of Houston, Bike Barn/Specialized and GHORBA are hosting the 2004
Collegiate MTB Finals at Double Lake April 24 & 25. Unfortunately, this is a
Collegiate only event. Would love to have an open class, but will not have the
time to get all the required events in if we did. Secondly, we need volunteers
to help man the course, do registration and stage, etc. All the normal things
that a race requires. Most of the familes of the Collegiate racers from U of H
are helping, but we need more people to do this right. If you can come on out
and work a day, part of a day or the weekend, please let me know:

Minutes from the GHORBA Meeting, April 12, 2004.
Trails Report:
Stephen F. Austin State Park: Kelly Strader reported that the Girl Scouts have
graciously donated $500 for decking of several bridges on the "Flat Trail". The
Girl Scouts will be doing the work this weekend the 17th of April. 30 - 2x8x12
and 10- 4x4x16 and 2-4x4x10. The 2x8s are for decking and the 4x4s are for
curbs.
A work party is scheduled for April 24 at 9 am. There will be approximately 3
NEW miles of trail cut at the "North Beach". This will give a section of single
track after a small rest on the Brazos trail. Bring your gloves and trail
clearing tools. Park and meet in the lot by the swimming pool. Bring your bike
and ride the trails afterwards.
Memorial Park: Clay Fenton has stepped up to help out with the Trail Steward
duties for Memorial Park. Thanks, Clay! He reports that there are several big
trees down and a few places holding water. GHORBA will be hosting a work party
at Memorial Park on April 24 at 9 am to deal with these issues. Bring your
tools and gloves. Meet in the parking lot nearest the soccer fields.
Both of these work parties count towards Texas Mountain Bike Racing Association
(TMBRA) Paydirt points. Even if you don't race, you are still eligible for the
Paydirt Raffle. Paydirt forms must be postmarked no later than May 1, 2004.
Check out the TMBRA website for more info.
http://www.tmbra.org/paydirt/paydirt.htm
Jack Brooks Park: Coby James reports that several new bridges are in place, but
not permanently set just yet. They've had a few problems with vandals moving
the bridges, so be careful. When it dries up enough, these bridges will be
cemented in. There are also some unique teeter-totter bridges and ramps - Cool!
If you're not brave enough to try those, there are alternate routes around the
obstacles.
Cypresswood: Kevin Hatfield and GHORBA will be meeting with Harris County Flood
Control concerning possible official use of the Cypresswood trail system for
recreation. Christina Case reported that GHORBA was contacted by the National
Parks Service to complete a survey on working with HCFC to develop more uses of
their properties.
Treasurer, Mike Lutomski reports that we are in good shape financially and that
GHORBA will be purchasing QuickBooks software program to use for our bookkeeping
purposes.
Remember if you shop at Randall's you can add GHORBA to your Randall's Good
Neighbor Card - GHORBA's number 10247.
Events: Christina Case is working on several fun events!

Ride Clinic: to be held on June 19, location to be announced. A mountain bike
skills clinic for adults of all ability levels. A small fee to cover costs
will be required with registration. More info to follow.
Chris has also applied for a $500 grant for bridge materials for Stephen F.
Austin State Park.
SprocKids: GHORBA President, Jeff Neilsen, has been in touch with City
Councilman Adrian Garcia to sponsor a kid's clinic in the heights area. Keep an
eye out for more details on date and location. These clinics not only teach
kids mountain bike skills but is a great way for GHORBA to give back to the
community. Consider volunteering for this worthwhile event. It's priceless to
see the smiles on the kids' faces!
Mike Lutomski is working to put together a Mountain Bike trip to Monterrey,
Mexico. Tentative date is Memorial weekend. It's only an 8.5 hour drive from
Houston and includes 3-4 days of epic rides in the Monterrey area, guided by
experienced local bike shop owner. Contact Mike for more information

University of Houston is hosting the Collegiate Mountain Bike Finals at Double
Lake in Coldspring, Texas on April 24 & 25. GHORBA Board member, Coby James, is

Mark your calendars now for the Houston Big Ring Challenge, October 23 &24.
This is GHORBA's second year to host a fall TMBRA race. Thanks to all of our
sponsors and volunteers last year's race was a success. We have already been
hard at work behind the scenes on preparations for the fall race. Right now we
are trying to line up corporate sponsors. GHORBA is making an effort to not
lean on the local bike shops for too many donations (they get hit up all of the
time for freebies!). Think about any connections that you might have who would
be willing to donate. Their donations will benefit all of the local Houston
Trail systems. Remember that a donation to GHORBA is tax-deductible as we are a
non-profit organization. Contact Keith Porter porterka@... or Cynthia
Stewart cynbiker@... if you need more information.
Many thanks to Will Black, Pro Mountain Bike Racer, Cat 1 Road Racer and
Manager of BikeBarn on Westheimer for speaking about training and cycling
fitness. He had a lot of helpful information!
Our next meeting will be held on May 10 at Otto's BBQ. We'll welcome back
dietician, Angela Kirke, who will talk on Proper Hydration for cyclists.
