The Texas Bicycle Coalition is proud to announce that Texans can now purchase
their very own "Share the Road" license plate from the Texas Dept. of
Transportation! The plate depicts the image of five-time Tour de France champion
Lance Armstrong, who will compete for his sixth Tour victory this summer. Lance
is the first living person in Texas history to be honored on a license plate.

University of Houston, Bike Barn/Specialized and GHORBA are hosting the 2004
Collegiate MTB Finals at Double Lake April 24 & 25. Unfortunately, this is a
Collegiate only event. Would love to have an open class, but will not have the
time to get all the required events in if we did. That said:
This weekend (April 3-4) we will be doing trailwork at Double Lake. Saturday at
1:00pm and Sunday morning at 9:00am. Meet at the trailhead. This qualifies for
TMBRA Paydirt Points. http://www.ghorba.org/doublelake.htm
Secondlywe need volunteers to help man the course, do registration and stage,
etc. All the normal things that a race requires. Most of the familes of the
Collegiate racers from U of H are helping, but we need more people to do this
right. If you can come on out and work a day, part of a day or the weekend,
please let me know: cjames8@...
Finally, we are offering an opportunity to clean out your garage of JUNK. We are
making our own trophys for the finals. ANY bike related JUNK (i.e. spokes,
derailers that are mangled, sprokets, hubs, etc. that are no longer useful) we
want. We are going to arrange these items in sculptures and mount them on wooden
bases for awards.
If you have things you want to get rid of...bring them to the next GHORBA
meeting on April 12 and I will pick them up.
THANKS!
Also, If you work the race, U of H is Hosting a Bar-B-Que for the teams and
workers Saturday night @7pm at the Park (Double Lake) You will be fed well! So
come help us and enjoy the party!

GHORBA will be hosting a ride and camp-out at Stephen F. Austin State Park on
Saturday, March 27th. GHORBA volunteers have worked incredibly hard to build new
trails at this park and would love to show them off! The park is beautiful with
hardwood trees everywhere, a great view of the Brazos river, lots of deer, and
great camping.
The plan is to ride in the afternoon starting at about 2:00 p.m., then heat up
the grill for a laid-back dinner amongst riders and friends. There's a grocery
store down the road, so we will make food determinations based upon people
present. Please bring side dishes and refreshments. We will ride again in the
morning about 9:00 a.m. Some people will head out on Sunday morning to ride
Rocky Hill Ranch.

your right where you need to exit. Head north about 1 mile and look for the park
entrance on your left, Park Road 38. Check in at the ranger station and head
towards the back of the park. The camping area is where GHORBA will be
stationed. Look for the GHORBA banner and new tent!
WET TRAILS REMINDER: Please be kind to the trails in Houston!!! When it's wet,
it only takes one or two people to create ruts in the trails and detour proper
drainage requiring hours of volunteer time to correct. Everyone is wanting to
be off-road..just hold on a little longer for the warm weather to come an dry up
everything around town. :)
SKILLZ CLINIC: The GHORBA board is working on a date for our annual spring
riding clinic. Details to follow!!!
WACO NATIONALS: GHORBA would like to congratulate everyone who raced in Waco

Elections
for the Board of Directors will be held next month (March). If you are
interested in serving on the board let Jeff Neilson or any of the current board
members know.
MEMBERSHIP
Jaime works hard to send out notices to remind us when are memberships are up
for renewal. Please help her to keep current. Also, remember to use you
Kroger share card that you received with your membership. Each time you use it,
a small portion of your total purchase is donated to GHORBA. Every little bit
helps!
THIRD WARD BIKE CENTER
GHORBA had received donated bikes that we were not able to use for the
SproKids Program. Thanks to Christina Case and Jamie Hendrickson these bikes
did not go to waste. They donated them to the Third Ward Bike Center where they
were put to good use. For more information on this Co-Op program check out
their website www.thirdwardbikes.com
TRAILS REPORT - GHORBA is busy with many local trails!
Stephen F. Austin State Park - 3.75 miles of new bike trails have been built
and need to be ridden in. There are more trails in the works with room for 8 to
10 miles of additional trail. We need to build several bridges. Kelly Strader
is planning a work party for a date in April. Check out the GHORBA site for a
trail map.
Huntsville State Park - There are areas of the park that hold water this time
of the year. Richard has flagged a reroute with orange tape and would like your
input. The Lower Praire trails will be turned into handicap access and self
guided nature trail - closed to bikes. However, paydirt points (for TMBRA
racers) are available if you can help out. A work party is tenatively set for
March 6.
On February 21 a Dirty Duathalon will be held at Huntville.
The trails have been GPS'd and a map will be available soon. Thanks to
Richard for all of his hard work!
Memorial Park- Two work parties have taken place recently with much
accomplished at both! We corrected some areas with poor drainage and
revegetated a few areas where the trail had widened over time. Thanks to the
many volunteers that show up at the work parties to help maintain the trails.
Next work party scheduled for March 20.
Jack Brooks Park - Coby and crew have elevated the Golden Gate bridge and are
working on 2 other bridges. Please respect the trails and don't ride them when
they are wet. It does much damage to the trails. The volunteers work hard to
maintain the trails!
FAT TIRE FESTIVAL
Due to various reasons the Fat Tire Festival is not going to happen in March
this year. With the NORBA National Race in Waco also being held inMarch, many
vendors who had promised support to the FTF pulled out. Rather than risk
GHORBA losing money or putting on a less than wonderful event, the board decided
to reschedule it for a later date. Look for details for a GHORBA
campout/clinic/ride at Stephen F. Austin in March. A smaller scale, fun
gathering!
Those of you who missed the meeting, missed celebrating Keith Porter's
birthday (and thanking him for his hard work for GHORBA). We all enjoyed the
birthday cake, even though Keith had to miss the meeting!
Next Meeting will be the 2nd Monday in March at Otto's BBQ - On the agenda -
Elections and Angela Kirk will speak on Sports Nutrition.

GHORBA Meeting, Monday, February 9 : We will meet at Otto's BBQ in the back of
the restaurant. The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. This month we are featuring
a guest speaker. Dietician, Angela Kirk will be speaking on healthy eating and
sports nutrition. All are welcome to attend - bring a friend. Meetings typically
last an hour with people socializing afterwards. Otto's is located on Memorial
Drive between Westcott and Detering Streets (just east of Memorial Park).
A BIG thanks to all of you who came out to the Memorial Park work party on
Saturday. We accomplished so much! Work was done on the Blue trail to help
with drainage and prevent further erosion. Thanks so much to the 15 +
volunteers.
Remember that if the sign says the trails are closed due to wet conditons, that
means NO BIKES on the trails. Riding the trails when they're wet not only gets
your bike dirty but more importantly does damage to the trail.

know when the next one is scheduled.
Have a good day.
jamie <mtbjamie@...> wrote:The ride will be held at Double Lake instead of
Warda. We'll start riding at 9:30. Entry fee is $5.00 per car. Possibly lunch
afterward at 'The Hop' (local burger place) for those interested.
To get there take I-59 North to Cleveland. Exit FM 2025 and drive 15-20 miles

Pass this reminder on to anyone else who might not be on this list.
We are planning a Ladies Ride at Warda (Bluff Creek Ranch) on Sunday, January
25th. We will start the ride at 9:30 a.m. You will have to sign in and pay the
entry fee to the ranch (typically $6) before you ride. Past Ladies' rides have
included lots of stops along the trail to chat and catch a breath, as well as
lunch afterwards at a local spot. Beginners and more experienced riders will
both find it enjoyable. There are technical sections on the trails, but there
are detours for those who are still learning or building up confidence. Fellow
riders are always willing to help with riding pointers and advice. Everyone is
welcome to join us!!
Warda is located in central TX about 1.5 hours from Houston. You can get there
from I-10 or 290.
Take I-10 west to Columbus and go NW on Hwy 71. About 35-40 miles later, look
for Hwy 77 and take a right. The town of Warda is about 14 miles from Hwy 71.
Once in the tiny town of Warda look for Owl Creek Road and turn right. Bluff
Creek Ranch is 1/2 mile down on your left.
OR
Take 290 from Houston to Giddings. Once in downtown Giddings, look for the sign
for Hwy 77. Take Hwy 77 about 12 miles and look for the town of Warda (blink and
you'll miss it). Turn left on Owl Creek Road. Bluff Creek Ranch is about 1/2
mile down on your left.

Due to the expected rains both tonight and tomorrow morning we are
canceling the trails work party scheduled for Saturday January 17th in
Memorial Park. We will let you know on Monday the rescheduled date.
If the rain is lighter than expected some of us will be there Saturday
morning at 9:00 anyway to do some recognizance on future work parties
and you are welcome to join us.
During a light rain is a fantastic opportunity to see first hand how
water flow (our worst enemy) is affected by trails and to learn how to
design trails to allow the water to flow over them rather than be
captured by them. So join us if you like. We will be doing some light
work on the trails so this will qualify for Paydirt hours but we will
not be there more that a couple of hours.
Again, we will only be doing it if the rain is lighter than expected, so
you can make your own call. If you want an absolute yes or no you can
email me at lpruitt@... between 7 and 8:30 Saturday morning
for an answer...thanks

TRAIL WORK DATES ARE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD - PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING A COUPLE OF
HOURS OR YOUR TIME BACK TO THE TRAILS WE ALL RIDE AND LOVE.
JACK BROOKS PARK, SATURDAY, JAN 10TH: Work will include raising the "Golden
Gate" bridge and preparing it for lengthening. If you are interested in
assisting, meeting time is about 10:30am. Work will proceed until the job is
done or people get tired. Materials and tools will be provided – bring your
gloves, hammers, and water bottles. It is very muddy so be prepared to get
dirty. This counts for PayDirt Points, so bring your form and be sure to check
in and out with the trail steward, work leader. Directions to Jack Brooks can
be found on the GHORBA website under the Trails section.
MEMORIAL PARK, SATURDAY, JAN 17TH: We will be completing dirt work on the
trails starting at 9:00 and working until around 1:00 p.m. Bring your shovels,
gloves, and water bottles. This counts for PayDirt Points, so please be sure to
sign in and out with Larry. We will meet in the parking lot near the soccer
field on the south side of the park.

JANUARY MEETING/RIDE: We will NOT have a formal January meeting. Instead we
will have a group ride at Memorial Park starting at 6:30 on Monday, Janary 12th.
We will have two groups, one that will ride the trails (weather permitting) and
another that will do an urban ride. Both rides will require lights. We will
meet in the parking lot near the soccer field on the south side of the park.
(Please note that meeting at MP is the most central location for our members who
live in every corner of the city).
MEETING FORMATS: We are also working to change the formats of our monthly
meeting to start including interesting speakers, manufacturers' representatives
for part/accessory demos, and bike demos and rides with quick updates of
business affairs provided on paper. We hope you all will find this more
enjoyable than hearing the board ramble. We also hope you will find this format
more sociable and easier to meet other people.
