Subject: Subaru/IMBA Trail Care
Crew Program
03/19/02 02:35 Seeks New Team
PM
For Immediate Release: March 19, 2002
Contact: Jody Flemming, Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew Coordinator
303-545-9011, jody@...
Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew Program Seeks New Team
IMBA, the International Mountain Bicycling Association, is looking to hire
a
full-time, professional two-person team for the highly successful
Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew program. This position requires a passion for
mountain biking, excellent communication skills, a basic knowledge of
trailwork and team compatibility. The Crew will travel nearly all year in a
2002 Subaru Outback. The application deadline is April 10.
For the last six years, the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews have traveled the
world, sharing their trailbuilding expertise with volunteers, land managers
and trail advocates. As a direct result, thousands of miles of appealing,
environmentally sustainable trails have been built or revitalized. The
crews
have contributed to the trails community and mountain biking opportunities
in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and several European countries.
Sponsored by Subaru of America and directed by the International Mountain
Bicycling Association (IMBA), the Trail Care Crews work with
IMBA-affiliated
mountain bike clubs, land managers, and other trail user groups to solve
trail management challenges. The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews improve trail
conditions and trail experiences for everyone.
Now IMBA is looking for the newest team in a long line of dedicated trail
professionals, as we expand our trails programs. Rich and Jen Edwards have
served as our East Coast Trail Care Crew for the past two years, but are
now
preparing to work for IMBA in a new capacity. They will become key members
of IMBA's new trail consulting program, which encourages land managers to
contract with the International Mountain Bicycling Association's
professionals for trail layout, design, construction and maintenance
consulting services.
Because of the Edwards' upcoming move to this exciting new IMBA program, we
are now looking for the next Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew. Although the
position is not for everyone, couples who enjoy travel and adventure, love
to work outside and want to help improve trails and mountain biking are
encouraged to apply.
Please send a resume and cover letter to Jody Flemming at jody@... or
to IMBA, P.O. Box 7578, Boulder, CO 80306 USA by Wednesday, April 10, 2002.

q Illegal Trails and Rio Bravo ? Phillip Niccum ? As many of you have seen
on the GHORBA website or via emails you may have been sent, there has been
accelerated illegal trail building activity at Memorial Park. The builders
of the bridges in the Triangle were identified and given the opportunity to
remove their work. GHORBA will be going back in to clean up the area.
Given that this activity is not likely to cease due to increased traffic
and lack of legitimate trail space, it was discussed that Rio Bravo might
be the best option to give an outlet to this type of trail building. Rio
Bravo already allows a "dangerous" sport, requires waivers, has insurance,
and is interested in new mountain biking trails on the remainder of the
property. This property may be well suited to a well-built free-ride or
North Shore course. Phillip is putting together a recon team to visit the
site in the next two weeks.

Subject: Bicyclists' on-line survey: Cycling & the Government
Greetings Fellow Cyclists -
I'd like you to complete an on-line survey at the website of
Bicycling Magazine www.bicycling.com called Cycling and the Government
(middle section on first page).
Those of you who can, please add a link on your group's website
to the survey as well as forward this info to cyclists everywhere.
Here's the whole story:
National Bike Summit in DC March 6 - 8 - this is basically the
bicycle industry's lobbying days on Capitol Hill in DC, hosted
by our friends at the League of American Bicyclists. I know most
of you can't go, but please take time to complete a survey we've
put together on the Bicycling Magazine website www.bicycling.com
called Cycling and the Government (left side of the first page).
The point is to have some data to present to members of Congress
while we lobby for continued funding for bike lanes, trails,
education, etc., when federal legislation is up for reauthorization
late in 2003. Take a few minutes and complete the survey, please
- and maybe you can go the Summit next year when it'll be really
important to let Congress know how important bicycling is.

to Austin
02/28/02 05:22 PM
Christina--I have attached the press release for the crew visit. The
meeting you would probably want to attend is not explained in detail there.
It will be a visit to the Slaughter Creek tract of the Proposition 2 lands.
That piece of property is in the southwest part of Austin off of hwy. 1826.
I can give you exact details on how to get there, let me know where you
will be staying, or if you are coming in that morning if you are coming in
on 71 or 290.
The prop 2 lands were acquired with city of Austin bond funds in the last
three years. The tract we will be reviewing is over 550 acres. It is the
first opportunity for us to lay out trails on prop 2 lands (there are six
properties with trail potential) so it is very important that we do it
correctly the first time. Joey Klein was a trail care crew member for the
past two seasons but is now working for IMBA in a consulting role. He is
one of the best trail lay-out specialists and is a wealth of knowledge re
trails, trail building and maintenance. We will be walking the property
from 9am to 3pm to assess its potential for trails and to determine how to
build on some tricky slopes. The overriding priority is to protect water
quality, the reason the city acquired the land.
I hope you can make it, it will be worth your time if you want to learn
more about trails. Hill

The Waco Bicycle Club is hosting a work / play weekend on February 23rd and
24th at the Broken Oak Ranch in Valley Mills, TX. The Broken Oak ranch,
with its panoramic vistas and 185 feet of elevation change, is being
developed into a 420 acre, private mountain bike park. The park has
qualified for TMBRA Pay Dirt points. We have plenty of trail work to go
around, so be sure to bring your loppers, rakes, handsaws, and hoes. We've
already cleared 8 miles of double track and about 3 miles of single track so
don't forget to bring your bike.
On Saturday evening (February 23rd), the Waco Bicycle Club will be hosting a
steak dinner. A dinner, with all the trimmings, is an unbelievable $5.00 /
plate--so be sure to bring an appetite. To accompany the meal, we are
having live acoustical entertainment. Don't miss this great opportunity to
work on some exciting new trails, earn TMBRA Pay Dirt points, ride till you
drop, eat an incredible meal, listen to live music, and camp out under the
stars. The camping facilities, which are under a massive grove of century
oaks trees, are top notch. There are two electrical hook-ups, a flush
toilet and sink (sorry, no water or latrine hook-ups for RVs), and lighted
picnic areas. The Waco Bicycle Club and the Broken Oak Ranch will provide
Sunday morning breakfast to all campers free of charge, so all you need for
the weekend is your own drinking water / beverage and a bag lunch. Work and
play will take place from 9:00 am on Saturday until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
To reserve your steak dinner or for further information, please call Rusty

1. From Waco take Highway 6 west 20 miles to Valley Mills.
2. 2 miles west of Valley Mills on Highway 6 you will take the first right
onto CO 3310 (look for a "dozer work" sign on the left)
3. Follow 3310 for 1.5 miles, the ranch will be on the right (look for a
lone chimney by a pipe gate and fence).

Jerseys are in and they look great! Some were handed out at Lajitas this
last weekend....the others will be handed out next week, not this Saturday
as hoped. Mark is stuck in the fridged northwest part of Canada and has
all of the jerseys safely locked away in his Houston apartment. Sorry.
There is a group going to Warda to ride this Saturday morning - everyone is
welcome. We will ride at 9:30 a.m. Warda is about 1.5 hours from Houston
off of Hwy 77 at Owl Creek Rd. Take I-10 to Columbus and head north on Hwy
71 until you come to Hwy 77. Take Hwy 77 northeast to the little town of
Warda....look for Owl Creek Rd. You can also get there via Hwy 290 and
head south on Hwy 77.
Please read the attached email from the Parks Dept. The language in the
original email may make offend you, but the important message is that
someone has taken it upon him or herself to start building illegal trails.
Not to mention they are building the trails incorrectly, which will result
in accelerated erosion. Both are unacceptable. We have really come a long
way with the Parks Dept over the last couple of years, but things like this
will certainly undermine any credibility we've gained. If you see people
building these illegal trails, tell them stop. We only hurt ourselves and
garner very bad publicity when this keeps happening.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Re: Unauthorized Bike Trail (Under Construction)
Rick,
These discoveries are those that really bother me as an ecologist. The
bikers building the above referred to trail have decided to further destroy
a major washout caused by Allison (I estimate a 100 feet of bank washed
away with a huge pine tree) at this location.
The biker's destruction is predicated by turning their Unauthorized Trail
ninety degrees to the bank, that remains, thus exposing the fragile
powdered sand or humus allowing the rain fall a 'straight shot' down a
slope. In less than a year, there will be a medium ravine coming down to
the washout. This will facilitate even more erosion to this turn on the
bayou.
To add insult to injury, the bikers are using a precipitous unsafe portion
of the former Bridle Trail in the Unauthorized Bike Area. This precipitous
portion is approximately 30 or 40 feet from the 'No Bike' Barricade that
turns the blue/purple south to Southeast or west to northwest. The bikers
are going to wrap their trail around to the top of the precipice and 'do
loops' in this Unauthorized Area of the Park. This precipice is far, far
more dangerous than what they called the 'roller coaster'.
Judging from the construction techniques being employed, this construction
is being done by persons well known to the Biking Community. Sadly, all
this destruction is for a very few bikers who are stupid enough to go down
the precipice.
In my opinion, this would be a good test for GHORBA. I happened upon Garth
and his girlfriend walking their dogs. Garth is a pleasant enough guy. I
described where the Unauthorized Trail is being constructed and told him
who I am sure is building the Unauthorized Trail. Garth knew exactly who I
was talking about.
Rick, ask GHORBA to encourage the bikers to stop the construction - they
know whose doing it. Note to GHORBA that if Civil Tech Engineering is
correct in its drawings (shown at the Park's Master Plan Meeting), this
Unauthorized Trail Construction is in the most delicate of locations.
I simply can not believe these bikers just want to destroy what little
'Green Area' we have in this City for maybe 5 bikers.
I didn't add to my last email that we have jerseys in every size for sale
even if you didn't order one previously. You may purchase them in Lajitas,
at Memorial Park next weekend, and/or at the March meeting. They are $50
each.
We have now taken possession of the GHORBA jerseys. If you will be in
Lajitas for the race this weekend, you may pick them up from Mark Wise.
Look for the GHORBA banner. If you aren't going to Lajitas, we will be at
Memorial Park next Saturday the 23rd from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. near the
rugby/soccer field parking lot. If all else fails, you can pick them up at
next month's meeting at Jax Grill. For those who live out of town, we will
mail you your's next week.
The report is that they look awesome! FINALLY.....
Thanks for your patience!
I have reserved the back room at JAX Grill at 7 pm for the remainder of the
year. The dates are as follows:
March 11th
April 8th
May 13th
June 10th
July 8th
Aug 12th
Sept 9th
Oct 14th
Nov 11th
Dec 9th (unless we decide to schedule a Christmas Party elsewhere)
I think it still says we meet on the first Monday of every month on the
About section of the website. We actually meet on the 2nd Monday of every
month. I will continue to send out reminders, but please mark your
calendars.
Ladies and gents, fellow bikers and afficionatos,
I would like to remind you of the monthly GHORBA meeting tonight, at 7:00 PM at
Jax Grill.
We changed the location of the meeting due to the overwhelming attendance at the
January meeting. Thanks for making the meetings so successful! :-)
(Directions are at the bottom of this message.)
We hope to see even more of you at this upcoming exciting meeting.
We'll all miss Spagetti Western's awesome pasta, but we have now a larger and
dedicated room, so hopefully, everyone will be able to hear Christina speak. :-)
On the agenda for this meeting are a few items of interest.
We'll have highlights of last week's meeting regarding the infamous Master Plan.
I am sure those of you who did not attend want to know what the future of MTB
and trails holds.
We'll also talk about upcoming and exciting events, such as a beginners' skills
clinic, camp and ride expeditions, camp and race adventures, jerseys and other

I went to the Memorial Park last night to put up signs reminding MB riders
to yield right of way to the horses that will be using the trails this
weekend. When I arrived, the park was closed to thru traffic and the
public. I kindly asked the gentleman in charge to place the signage up for
me so that everyone using the trails this weekend might be safe. His
remarks were less than flattering, but what was most notable was the fact
that he informed me the trails are to be closed this weekend except for the
horses. Odd, the Parks Department never put up any advanced signage or
left any message on the recording to indicate this. Surely they wouldn't
just close them without telling any of the other users? Apparently that's
the case. Either way, please consider avoiding MP this weekend and ride at
the Ant Hills or somewhere else. It will save you a trip and the
harrassment. Better yet, join us at Double Lake tomorrow!
#1 Group Ride: 9 a.m. at Double Lake Recreational Area in the Sam Houston
National Forest this Saturday. Take 59 north to Cold Springs exit. Head
west approx. 16 miles. Park entrance is on your right. Once inside the
park, take the a left at the Y in the road until you can see the lake. The
group will be parked to the left in the dirt lot near the trail head.
#2 February Meeting: Monday, February 11th at JAX GRILL at 7 pm. We have
reserved the back room and probably will do so for the remainder of the
year. Topics to cover: Memorial Park Master Plan as it pertains to MB
trails, Nomination of new board members (if you are interested, please
attend this meeting), etc.
#3 THE RODEO PARADE IS THIS WEEKEND, HENCE THE HORSES WILL BE ALL OVER
MEMORIAL PARK. Please be careful when riding out there this
weekend....please be mindful of blind corners and announcing yourselves by
yelling "rider". Watch out for large green trail apples......
Subject: SuperCyclist
training sessions
The Texas SuperCyclist Project is looking for a few good Texans who want to
learn how to teach bicycle safety to fourth and fifth grade-age kids.
The SuperCyclist Project is a program of the Texas Bicycle Coalition
Education Fund.
If you, or anyone you know - teachers, parents, police, firefighters, EMTs,
parks and recreation employees, youth group leaders, church leaders, scout
leaders?anyone who currently teaches children in an organized program
-wants to attend any of our FREE SuperCyclist Project training sessions,
click on the related link, or visit
www.SuperCyclist.org/tacs.html#calendar.
Training sessions are scheduled between now and the end of May at locations
throughout the state. Training dates and times are listed at the
SuperCyclist Project web site. You'll learn a lot?and have some fun, too.
This is a great opportunity for anyone who enjoys the gift of bicycling and
wants to pass that gift on - safely - to new generations of Texans.
Further information is available by emailing Erica@... or by
calling Erica Hefner at (512)476-RIDE (7433).
Remember, the Texas SuperCyclist Project needs you!
Don't forget about the Memorial Park Master Plan meeting this evening. The
meeting is at St. Theresa's church across from Beck's Prime (golf course)
at 7 pm until 9:30. Please come and listen, ask questions, and give
suggestions on the future direction of the park.
TMBRA Rocky Hill Ranch Race - Sunday, February 3rd.....see www.tmbra.org
for more details. Cross your fingers that the rain holds off!
Memorial Park Master Plan Meeting - Monday, February 4th 7:00 pm to 9:30
pm. St. Theresa's Church across from the golf course Beck's Prime. The
Master Plan will decide the future development of the entire park,
including those areas not officially developed. The consultant conducting
the study of the entire park will be discussing the results of the
environmental, cultural, and drainage study. They will also mention some
of the user group project requests and allow some time for questions. This
meeting is the first of several to come. Please consider attending so that
you may listen, learn, and ask questions about the park....be part of the
process that decides its future.
Group Ride at Double Lake - Saturday, February 9th at 9:00 am. From
downtown Houston take U. S. Highway 59 to Cleveland, Texas. On the bypass
around Cleveland you will pass Highway 105, the very next exit is FM 2025.
There is a highway sign with FM 2025 and Coldspring on it. Take this exit.
At the top of the hill turn left and go northwest for about 16 miles and
there will be a big brown sign out front of the park
entrance saying Double Lake Recreation Area. Turn right into the park, go
to the pay station and pay $5.00 per vehicle for parking. If you wish to
picnic, swim, or camp there is an additional fee. But to just park and
use the bike trails it is $5.00. From the pay station you can see the road
Y's just ahead of you. Take the road to the left and follow it all the way
down a parking area where it basically dead ends into an open grassy area.
Park anywhere
around this area.
February GHORBA Meeting - Monday, February 11th at 7:00. We have reserved
the back room at Jax Grill on Shepherd just south of I-10. We will be
discussing the results of the Master Plan Meeting as it pertains to the
connection trail, the issue of illegal trail building and possible
education methods, etc.
Don't forget about the work party this Sunday. We're going to be moving a
lot of dirt around so please try to come up with a wheel barrow if you can.
A shovel full at a time is going to make for a really long slow day...
GHORBA will host a PAYDIRT TRAIL WORK PARTY at Memorial Park on
Sunday
January 27th from 9:00 a.m. till 2:00p.m. We will meet at the RUGBY
FIELD
Parking lot and go from there. The Parks Department is providing
several
dump truck loads of fill dirt at various locations within the trail
system
so bring your shovels and hoes. They are also providing some wheel
barrows
but if you can get hold of one please bring it also. Remember, this
work
party does qualify for Spring 2002 Paydirt Points.
