MOUNTAIN BIKE FUN DAY AT DOUBLE LAKE 9/19/04 - GHORBA will be hosting a Mountain
Bike Fun Day Sunday, September 19th at Double Lake Recreation Area in Cold
Spring, TX. We will have a free Kids Clinic with sessions for both beginning
and experienced children. The session will start at 9:00 a.m and include
viewing of a bike safety video, which provides instruction on properly riding on
streets, helmet use, etc. Groups are then broken out for the MBing instruction
portion on the bike. Everyone will then head onto the trails and ride with the
adults. We would also like to encourage folks to bring a friend who has not
ridden at Double Lake or off-road before to introduce them to mountain biking.
The adults are free to ride while the clinic is going on or help with fitting
helmets and bikes and giving instruction. The morning will conclude with a
hamburger and hot dog picnic for everyone. For more info and child registration
click Here. We are also in need of a few volunteers - if
you are interested please RSVP to Chris Case at jayhawkrider@...
RACE SEASON IS HERE!! The TMBRA Fall Race Series includes several races in and
near the Houston area, including Huntsville, Double Lake (GHORBA race
http://www.ghorba.org/bigring.htm), and Lake Bryan. These races are all in the
month of October. For more information on each race, go to www.tmbra.org for
schedules, rules, and registration. These are great courses to cut your racing
teeth on, not to mention supporting local trails and organizations!!
MEMORIAL PARK MASTER PLAN - The MP Master Plan passed in the Houston City
Council this week. The trail plan includes the existing sanctioned trails on
the south side of Memorial Drive and additional trails in the NW corner of the
park (design and approval pending). The plan also includes an official Trails
Committee with members of the trail community, as well as inclusion of the IMBA
trail building standards for future projects. Maintenance and improvement of
the existing trails will be ongoing and in need of volunteers.
TRAIL COURTESY REMINDER - Houston's trails are enjoyed by so many people and are
frequently crowded to the point of annoyance to many. Please remember to call
out "Rider" on blind curves and when you are ascending/descending. If you are
approaching walkers or joggers, slow down and let them know you're behind them.
Include the number of riders behind you "Four back". When passing a rider who
is approaching you, move to your right so that both of you can share the trail
hopefully without having to stop. If everyone follows these simple rules, our
riding experiences and safety will only continue to improve.
Have a safe holiday weekend! Love your bike and ride often!!
