BIKEWAY SURVEY: Although we're focused on off-road issues, many of us ride on
Houston's streets. Want to share your thoughts on the bikeways and cycling
usage in this city? Lilibeth Andre, the City of Houston Bikeway Coordinator,
asked that we all fill out the following survey. Your input will help. Thanks.

JACK BROOKS WORK PARTY: Galveston County Parks has given us a large amount of
wood and materials to build trailhead entrances at the park. The work party
will be Sunday, Aug 24th starting at 8:30 a.m. For those who attend church or
are late risers, there is an 11:30 start for the second part of the work party.
Food and drinks will be available, so please email Edgar if you are planning to
attend at focuz@.... This counts for PayDirt!! The efforts being put forth
are helping to prepare the park for the Bike-O-Rama festival to be held the
first weekend in November. There will be events of all types, including time
trials, the Lumberjack Challenge (teeter totters, etc), a kids course, etc. Be
on the look out for more details!!!
HUNTSVILLE WORK PARTY: Saturday, August 30th. TX Parks and Wildlife has
approved the reroute for the trail entrance near the Interpretive Center.
Richard and a few others will do some initial work preparing the area, but many
people are needed to actually create the switchbacks and to close and revegetate
the existing trail. (Swtichbacks allow for better drainage management on a
trail, as well as help prevent erosion). The work party will begin at 8:00 a.m.
at the Interpretive Center. This counts for PayDirt, so bring your forms for
Richard to sign. Don't forget to bring your bike to ride afterwards! Email
Richard kilo9@... so he can plan for food and supplies.
TRIMMING TIPS: When trimmng branches, be sure to clip the branch at the base of
a joint or at the base of the tree. The tree recovers faster and the sharp
branch is not sticking out. When removing small vegetation from the side of a
trail, be sure to clip at ground level; do NOT leave part of the stump sticking
up. This is very dangerous, as it leaves a dagger sticking up for someone to
potentially impale him/herself if he/she trips or falls off a bike. Lastly, be
sure to remove the vegetation you cut from the trail. Don't leave it lying in
the trail or on the edge for someone to catch his/her pedal on. Toss it into
the woods.
TMBRA RACING SERIES BEGINS: The TMBRA fall series begins Labor Day weekend at
Kelly Creek Ranch in Kerrville, TX. If you want more information, go to
www.tmbra.org.
GROUP RIDE AT HUNTSVILLE: We will have our September group ride on Saturday,
Sept 6th at Huntsville State Park starting at 9:00 a.m. Come see the fruits of
our labor and enjoy at great day on your bike with fellow cyclists. There are
groups for every riding ability from beginner to expert. Everyone is welcome!
RAFFLE FOR JAMIS XLT 1.0: Buy a raffle ticket for $5, or 10 for $45. Go to the
GHORBA website for more details and to buy online. The tickets will be mailed
to you for the drawing on Sunday, October 26th at the Houston Big Ring Challenge
at Double Lake Recreation area. Cyclone Cycles is generously donating this to
help GHORBA raise funds, so please buy a ticket or two. Don't need a bike? Win
it and sell it....not a bad idea, eh? Want to help sell tickets for a couple of
