It has been brought to GHORBA's attention that action will be taken in the
Archery Range or what is commonly known as Area 51. Officials have stated
that citations will be issued and arrests will be made for anyone riding or
doing trail maintenance in the area and charged with criminal mischief and
trespassing. The area is fenced and considered off limits to everyone
except when escorted by park staff. Although the city is justified in this
action, illegal trail building continues to be a clear indication of the
lack of trail access across the city and evidence of an underserved user
group.
Legally building trail in this area and other locations in Memorial Park
was formally proposed by GHORBA and is to be discussed at the Master Plan
meeting being held on Monday, Sept. 9th from 7pm to 9:30 at St. Theresa's
Church across from Beck's Prime and the golf course. There will be one
more meeting later this fall to display the final master plan for the park
before it is submitted for vote by City Council and the Houston Parks
Board.
Your attendance at the Master Plan meetings is very important and will
serve to make everyone aware of the importance of increased trail access in
the city of Houston. Please make plans to attend.
