GHORBA May 2002 Meeting JAX Grill
Huntsville Trail work and status: Paul, Russell, and Richard
Richard has been working with the Parks Director concerning the proposed
reroutes and approval has been granted for the reroutes proposed thus far.
Consideration is also be given to opening the race course to cycling year
round instead of just during the race. Another maintenance planning
meeting will occur this Wednesday to layout, flag, and photograph
additional reroutes or repairs. Dates for actual work are being discussed
and will be announced shortly. PayDirt points will apply for 2003 race
season.
Ant Hills Report: Mark Wise
Two 35' bridges have been built to cross low-lying areas on the trails an
additional corrections have been made to existing trails to help prevent
erosion. Mark and company have developed a flyer with rider etiquette and
IMBA yield and erosion control info. These will be placed on vehicles to
help educate riders in the area to help prevent any possible collisions due
to high traffic during the summer.
Harris County Flood Control Property: Ryan Spates
GHORBA reps will be meeting with HCFC officials tomorrow, Tuesday to look
at property on E. Mount Houston (east of 59) adjacent to Greens Bayou.
This is the third meeting. Sensitive areas have already been identified,
and trail area has been laid out preliminarily.
Olympic Park Hill at Sims Bayou: Chris Case
While attending the IMBA conference in Moab, the National Park Service
representative spoke about the Urban Rivers and Trails Conservation
program. Under this program, the NPS has selected 5 urban projects it will
be involved in: one is the proposed Olympic Park in Houston.
Conversations with the Parks Dept. and Harris County Flood Control indicate
that no one is currently aware of who is in charge of the project. But a
recent talk with a representative of the engineering/landscape architecture
firm, PGAL, indicate that the contract to proceed on the project was signed
last week. More information will be forthcoming.
Rio Bravo Motorcross Property: Chris Case
Visited property and talked to the owner for about an hour. The owner is
willing to let us build a freeride/trials course on part of his property.
Need to put together a letter saying what we'd like to do, and he said he
will sign the letter for us to proceed. Would like to make another trip to
the property with people who are interested in building this type of trail
system. Please let Chris know when a good time would be.
Temple Inland Proposed Trail System: Lake Sam Rayburn
Scott Schaefer and Gail Hurley with TMBRA and Russell Adams and Chris Case
with GHORBA met with officials of Temple Inland, a large forestry company
in the East Texas area two weeks ago. Talks look very promising for a new
trail system and race course to be built near Lake Sam Rayburn adjacent to
the dam and National Forest property with 5 camp areas. The are is
relatively hilly and is very similar to topography found at Lincoln Parish
Park in Ruston, LA. TMBRA and GHORBA are working on a proposal to utilize
1000 acres to build a stacked loop trail system. Temple Inland has 2.2
million acres of forest land in East Texas. Additionally, TI is willing to
donate saplings for revegetating the grounds of the Olympic Park!!!
Memorial Park Trail Work: Russell Adams
Had 22 volunteers, burritos donated by Chipotle, moved almost 3 dump truck
loads of clay soil into Cambodia via wheel barrow, stabilized tree adjacent
to trail dip, and restored the trail elevation to historic (background)
level in dip. Have two dump truck loads at top of Call-out hill on purple
trail that will need to be moved before rain makes the pile immovable.
Thanks so much for everyone's hard work!!
Beginner's and intermediate clinic: Steffi Penco
Proposed date is Sunday, June 23rd. Proposed locations: Huntsville State
Park or Double Lake Park. Suggestions? We want this clinic to fit YOUR
needs, so we please give us your input. Cost of clinic will be $20-25 with
proceeds going to GHORBA for trail future projects and events.
GHORBA Discount: Steffi Penco
A proposal letter and memo of understanding from GHORBA has been drafted
and will be soon forwarded to several bike shops around town. We'll add
shops to the list as they join the program. You must be a member in current
standing to receive the discounts. Stay tuned for more on this fantastic
program.
