Subject: Bikes on Buses
Hello,
The Bikes on Buses program has been "postponed" once again. Below is
the text of the letter I received from Ms. DeLibero.
Regina
May 25, 2001
Dear Ms. Garcia:
"Thank you for coming to the Board Meeting on Thursday and giving our
operators the kudos that I'm glad you feel they deserve.
I wanted to follow up with you on the Bike Racks on Bus Program.
Currently, because of other pressing issues, such as our increase in
ridership, we have found there are no funds available for any projects
that do not increase the capacity of our system.
The increase in ridership has brought forth the demand to expand our
Park & Rides, build new ones and purchase additional buses. All our
CMAQ funds are being used to expand our service and implement new
service due to these demands.
Naturally, we are happy about ridership increases, since one of METRO's
priorities is working toward reducing congestion in Houston. But to
continue toward that goal, it is necessary to use funding where it is
wisest. Since we want more people to ride METRO and get their cars off
the road, it's important to show them that we are doing our best to make
it easy and convenient to take the bus.
We're sorry to inform you at this time that the Bike Racks on Bus
Program has been postponed. Once again, thank you for taking the time
to attend our meeting yesterday."
Sincerely,
Shirley A. DeLibero
President & Chief Executive Officer
