There has been a recent change in responsibility for monitoring of the
trails for wet conditions. The Parks and Recreation Dept. has now taken on
the responsibility of deciding when the trails will be closed due to rain,
rather than GHORBA/HAMBRA (owner or manager does this in most parks). This
means that the old hotline maintained by Larry Pruitt and GHORBA will only
be used for announcements. The new number, which is found on the new
signage at Memorial Park is (713) 645-4357 or 645-help. Please call this
number to find out whether the trails are open or closed before you head
out.....the Houston Police Department has been and will be escorting people
off the trails when the signs indicate that the trails are closed. Once
the kinks are worked out, nothing should change other than who you call to
find out the open/closed status. Closing the trails after a rain DOES
serve an important purpose. It helps prevent the ruts that exacerbate
erosion on the trails. Yes, riding in the mud is fun, but it only screws
up the trails....ride in your own yard if you like mud.
Should you get all the way to the park and find the trails closed, consider
riding the Fruit Loop or the trail on Allen Parkway...speedwork instead of
off road mountain biking.
Sorry for any inconvenience the recent phone number confusion has caused.
