There is also a good photo of the intrepid few who lasted through all the

Thanks, Bill, for all your efforts at keeping bicycling on the city (and
county) agendas! We're very sorry we had to leave before "L" came to
the top but, as usual, you were able to present the details and refresh
everyone's memories. We'll send emails when needed - even if we're in
sunny Florida.
We wish we could be there for the grand opening of the last bit of
the GAP, Thursday, since we enjoy that trail so much. We hope there is
a good turnout.

(This came in from David Whitaker just before Thanksgiving and I forgot to pass it on. Sorry. -- Bill)

For those of you who enjoy trail riding a note of importance. In Cumberland on Dec 14th at 1:00 PM the Allegheny Highlands trail of Maryland will open the last like of trail between Cumberland and Pittsburgh. The ribbon cutting by the Gov Ehrlich will complete this 335 mile trail from DC to Pittsburgh.

This will be the final link to connect the Great Allegheny Passage: http://www.atatrail.org/index.cfm

All are invited to head on out there for the ribbon cutting. - That is this Thursday.  Perhaps our retired members will get the chance.

Agreed.   Not sure one would survive a CM ride around here.

Yes, letters and e-mails will help.  When the time comes.  Most likely, to go to Mayor Holtzinger and the City Aldermen.

As far as a "Critical Mass" ride, perhaps, as long as we ride it legally.  Not the way the traditional "critical mess" rides go where they ignore all traffic controls.

Subject: [FPYG] Planning Commission Meeting Recap

First, thanks to all who came to the marathon meeting last night.  Even if you could not remain for the entire meeting, you were noticed and acknowledged.

The pace of progress if very slow, as evidenced by last night.  The meeting started at 6 pm.  Our issue was agenda item "L".  "L" could have stood for "Last", but it did not, as there was an "M" (as in "marathon meeting").

The bicycle route presentation finally bubbled to the top at 9:30!  (The discussion of parking for one of the previous items must have lasted for an hour.)  I began by pointing out that one can fit eleven bicycles in one car parking space.  As Tim Davis, our advocate in this matter, was at home (sick), Chuck Boyd from the City read the details on the item.  He was not in the "loop" as to the particular route and details, so I stepped up to the podium and presented the route.  (The concept is to connect MD144 to the east with MD40 to the west.)  There was some quick discussion on why the Planning Commission three years ago rejected this idea, and some disagreement (as far as why it was rejected back then) as well.  Once we reached the other side of that discussion, Alderman Alan Imhoff stated that he felt that the incorporation of bicycle facilities in the City (and County) is well past due.  (Mr. Imhoff was a founding member of the old Frederick County Trails organization).  The other planners seemed to nod in agreement with Mr. Imhoff's assessment that it is now time to move forward.

Danielle Rinker (from The Bicycle Escape bike store) spoke eloquently on this, as well as our own Mike Procario, who spoke of assisting a touring bicyclist find his way to the east side of town and on to Baltimore.

In January it is expected that the Planning Commission will approve this.  At that point, I am not yet sure where it will go.  I know we will have support from the State Highway Administration (SHA).  We'll likely need to get support from the City Aldermen next.  I'll begin making contacts with them, once I know in which direction we'll be going.  I'll send a note out about the January meeting, but we will not need the numbers of cyclists in support the way we did last night.  In the future, however, we might.  I'll keep everyone posted on what happens as I speak with Tim Davis of the City and the folks at SHA.

In the grand scheme of things, this is not a big, important project.  But it is a first step (baby steps!) toward getting cycling on the City and County radar, and we all have a stake in this if we wish to continue enjoying bicycling here in Frederick.  Chuck Boyd apologized to us for making us wait so very long in order to be heard and said that he'd try to get us moved much closer to the top of the agenda in January.

A huge amount of thanks go to the following folks who were there from the start until the very end: Danielle Rinker (and two of her friends whose names I do not recall), Mike Procario, John Gorham (on his bicycle) and Brian King.

Also many thanks to these Pedalers who spent much of their evening watching the proceedings: Laura Chaffiotte, Charles Wilson, George Ruszat, Ann and Fred Abeles, John Gantnier and Bernie Sellers (who rode their bikes there), Paul Simkins, and Tom "got there just in time" Rinker.  I expect I've forgotten someone - my apologies.

As one of those spouses who shook her head yesterday morning - I think Bill has found a new way to find his endorphins - by freezing them out.  For those of you who know Bill well, you know he's not just happy doing a simple bike ride these days.  Actually, for most of our life together, he's always been looking to push the envelope a bit.  I can only look at him with puzzlement, and love him all the more.  And the rest of you can either applaud his efforts, or keep me and the girls in your prayers (we have to live with him.)  I'll see you on the road when the weather hits a respectable temperature.

Hey folks!

In the new light of Randy's latest poll, I'll put down a little bit about this morning's impromptu "Cycle Therapy" ride.

Laura Chaffiotte and I left our respective homes at 7 a.m.  The temperature on my thermometer showed that it was a balmy 16 degrees.  On the 2 1/2 mile bike ride to Monocacy Middle School I scanned the eastern horizon just before sunrise and could not locate the supposed triple conjunction of Jupiter, Mercury and Mars.  I suspect that it was hidden by the horizon-hugging clouds.  Disappointment.  Once again, "celestially screwed."

We met at 7:15.  We each described to the other the looks on our spouses' faces as we cycled out of our homes.  Pretty much a shaking of the head, thoughts of "what is he (she) thinking?".  I am told that, hours later, all my daughter Carly had to say was, "my daddy's crazy."

By 9 am we were cycling thru Rocky Ridge and the temperature was up to a cozy 25 or so.  My toes were hurting and Laura's fingers were going from pain to numb.

We passed through Emmitsburg and headed back south and up the warmth-inducing climb of Grotto Road to the Mother Seton Shrine for a quick spiritual retreat.  By this time we were feeling better and we were off to Sheetz in Thurmont for food (delicious cinnamon rolls and a warmth-inducing banana).

We slogged south into the minor headwind back to Frederick and a total of a little more than 50 miles at a pretty paltry avg pace of 13 mph.

Our water bottles were almost thawed by then - as you might suspect, after the first 10 miles of the ride we could not drink from our frozen water bottles.  When we finished I think it was about 37 degrees.  On the whole, it was one fantastic ride.

What I wore:

Two polypropylene (or the equivalent) undershirts
Silk undershirt
Short sleeve jersey
Medium-weight cycling jacket (for 5 layers total)

Two pairs of socks - wool blend underneath regular summer socks
Cycling shoes
Side Trak shoe covers

Light tights (good for 50-65 degree weather)
Heavy tights on top of those (by themselves, good down to about 35)
"Package" protector (essentially a think brief with a windproof front -- 'nuff said)

Balaclava
Beard (too short right now, was only minor help)
Helmet liner inside the helmet

Consider joining us next time.  It's pretty much a matter of dressing well.  And a little bit of stubbornness.

FrederickPedalers group:

Winter Riding - We're curious to know how many folks are still pushing the
pedals at this time of year. Since winter conditions vary widely in these
parts, we'll use temperatures to determine who rides when. So, what is the
lowest temperature that you will endure on a bike ride. For those of you who
know no limits, kindly post a message detailing the coldest ride you've ever
done. Special bonus to anyone who owns studded bike tires!

o Above 60 degrees and can work on my tan.
   o Above 50 and then I'm cranky
   o Above 40 - I hardy, but not crazy
o Above 30 - It will warm up when we get to the hills
o Above 20 - But sometimes I chose to stay in bed
o No Limits - It's never too cold when you have the right clothes

Some of you long time members might remember my bike riding buddy, Bert
Daniel. He culminated his Maryland residence over 12 years ago when he
took a year and a half off from work and rode all 50 states by bike. He
moved to Tucson, and met his wife I think when both of them were on
separate individual loaded touring bike rides of the grand canyon. He
must of missed my dental banter when we were riding, as she is a
dentist, also.

You know, after further thought, I probably have that backwards.

I suspect that they consider an "expert" cyclist someone like a Tour de France racer, or the equivalent of a Dale Earnhardt.  They probably feel that the roads are unsafe for all others who are not characterized in the last sentence.

I am planning on attending the meeting at city hall Monday evening and am
entertaining the idea of riding around town before the meeting. Anyone
interested in a 30 min - 45 min ride before the meeting? We could meet in front
of city hall around 5:00pm.

Hi folks.....here is the info for this Monday's Planning Commission Meeting.  Please come to City Hall this coming Monday night at 6 p.m.  Even if you cannot remain for the entire time, just a show of presence from the bicycling community is encouraged if we are ever going to make any headway in this town.

PROJECT PROPOSAL

The project is an informational review and consideration of an officially designated bike route through the City of Frederick.  This review is in conjunction with county and regional routes designated by the State Highway Administration (SHA). The State Highway Administration, Regional & Intermodal Planning Division, has proposed the idea to the City of Frederick and Frederick County the concept of a bicycle route through the area.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

A meeting was held at the SHA District 7 Offices with the County and City in early October of 2003.  It was decided that for this concept to go forward, a formal request to consider this idea should be presented by the State.  The formal request was received from the Chief Engineer of District 7, Robert Fisher on October 9, 2003.

This item was before the City of Frederick Planning Commission on January 12, 2004.  The concept was presented by Staff only, demonstrating various routes to select.  Unfortunately, the Commission did not agree that this was a good idea, noting legal ramifications and route safety issues.

In the summer of 2005, another meeting was held at the District Office, this time including more State Officials and local bicycle enthusiasts.  In September, the Planning Commission heard at the DRC hearing more information on this idea and agreed to allow for more discussion in the public forum on this item.

The State Highway Administration is in the process of developing a network of cross state bicycle routes in an effort to further promote bicycling in Maryland as a form of transportation and recreation.  The goal is to provide a direct and continuous system that will link urban centers, transit centers and recreational centers throughout the state.  The focus will be on providing facilities for the skilled adult cyclists interested in long distance touring and utilitarian trips.

The SHA selected MD 144 from Baltimore City to the City of Frederick because, as noted above, it provides direct and continuous access from urban center to urban center.  It is understood that currently this roadway is being utilized for both local events and access between the two cities by local bicycle enthusiasts.

On October 5th, members of the Maryland Department of Transportation, The City Planning Staff, and interested bicycle enthusiasts took various test rides through the City.  In early spring of 2006, several meetings with an ad-hoc group that included another ride and subsequent evaluations of several routes took place.  No formal decision has been made to date.

STAFF COMMENTS & ANALYSIS

This route is to be designated for bicyclists that are in the upper 2% of the riding public – another words, expert cyclists.  This route is for riders traveling long distances; this is not for riders that do not feel comfortable in traffic.

Using the most direct and through route, albeit a congested one, was the consensus of the riders that participated in the evaluations of the routes.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION

City Staff and MDoT respectfully request that the Commission take the comments heard this evening and consider this item to be formally voted on at the next public hearing in January.

Now that Winter is really here, it's time for that annoying question:

"Is it cold enough for you?"

The answer is, of course, "no".

Meet Dr. Laura and I at sunup (that's 0715 (ewww)) this Saturday morning for a ride that will go 40-50 miles and be back by 11:30 am.  We may do hills and we may not; it depends upon factors such as wind, temps and our mood.

It's gonna be cold, so bundle up like a layered Eskimo at the front row of a Maple Leafs game.

- Bill (and the good doctor).

P.S.  This is not to take anything away from Gary Evans' Boonsboro ride.  We just can't spare the time away from the families right now.  We'll do that one after the holidaze.  And any time on the bikes while the families are asleep does not count as time away.  And don't forget we've got Loopy for Lewistown on Sunday.
