� Fred and I attended the planning session on the 355/85 Travel Improvements. �Essentially the meeting was a report by the consultant, Marcia Brinckerhoff, (funded through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's Transportation and Land Use Connections Program) on the Rt. 85, I-270, Rt. 355, Marc station, malls and businesses south of town. �The study looked at the current land use in the area, roads and other transportation connections (buses, Marc), sidewalks, bike lanes (or lack), etc. �In addition to the physical picture, they also surveyed people using the Marc station, the bus transfer station and in the FSK Mall to find out how they got there, where they were going, how they planned to leave and whether they would like to use other forms of transportation.
� This study will be used to help guide development and infrastructure in that part of the county. �So far the study has highlighted the need for more mixed (including residential) development, the need for better east west movement (transportation)the need for complete sidewalks and bike paths or lanes and better ties to downtown Frederick. � Ms Brinckerhoff showed several pictures and diagrams of how other municipalities have incorporated transportation hubs into their urban development in such a way to encourage use of other forms of transportation besides cars.
� The planning staff would like more input on their site�www.frederickcountymd.gov/tlc� On this site you can click on the map and type in your wishes for specific changes in this area of study. �Things needed are better lighting, better shelters at the Marc and bus transfer stations, better (safer and better lit) connections to the malls, complete sidewalks, speed control on the roads, etc. �They want more input from Frederick residents. �Better east west connections across I-270 are also needed.
� They also mentioned the long term plan for the Monocacy multi-use path from Walkersville to the Marc station. �That trail is in the county "long" term plan. �However, a short piece of it might be built sooner, connecting Rt. 85 to the Marc station. �A major problem will be some connection across the train tracks.
� Please encourage the Pedalers to input useful suggestions on the web site. �Low cost, quick fixes would be especially appreciated.

#2 Because of the economy, the City's budget will be cut to the bone. To ensure that we, as residents, don't wind up on the cutting room floor, we MUST advocate for our priorities (traffic, crime, speeding...). No one else will.

#3 There is strength in numbers. You DO NOT have to speak. Just being there is enough. It shows you care.

Speak up now or forever hold your concerns.

Wear your club jerseys, perhaps?� Mention bike accommodations?� Lower speed limits?� Bike lanes?� Reduced-cost bagels for bicyclists?

I detect a "helmet trap." They just have to set one officer to stop you and issue a warning, then 100m down the road a second officer will stop you - one day, two offenses!

Better yet, just set up in the morning at an elementary school to issue the warning. Then return in the afternoon for the second occurrence!

We did not specifically time the tire changes, but (remember Ray had some help) I think total elapsed time was about 10 minutes.

Just as we were getting ready to depart, a man appeared from out in front of his home, came over to us, and offered his help.� He told Jeff Johnson & I that he used to ride centuries in the 1980s.� He looked as if he could still ride a little bit, but I suspect he was in his late sixties by now and it did not look as if he'd done a century for a bunch of years now.

Early today, I drove up to Gettysburg in order to cycle from there to McSherrystown for the Frederick Pedalers contingent of the Parallel Universe Ride.� I arrived early at McSherrystown, so I took a tour of Hanover, just down the road.� It was drizzling the entire time, and I expected no one to be waiting at the start point for the trip back to Gettysburg.� So, I was quite surprised to reach the start and find Ray Gable, Mike Wali, Tim Bender, Barry McMahon, Dave Sweeney and Jeff Johnson waiting.

We left under drizzly skies, thick low clouds, and wet roads.� Temps were in the mid-to-upper 50s, so it actually felt pretty nice out.

Traveling the backroads to Gettysburg has advantages and disadvantages.� On the plus side, traffic was pretty light.� On the minus side, the backroads have a lot more mud and bovine poo on them.� (I had to spray off my bike when I got it home.)

The drizzle lasted for only about 45 minutes.� Someplace near Gettysburg we missed a turn and the scenery began to look familiar.� We found ourselves in Biglerville, the same place where we dined on the club century in September.� It was decided that turning south on PA34 toward Gettysburg would get us in the right direction.� The shoulder was fine, but traffic was heavier.� With a slight tailwind we motored very nicely - until Ray Gable stopped in front of us.

Always smiling, he informed us that he had not one, but two flat tires.� He - and no one else - hit some obstruction, rock or bump, and managed to snakebite flat both front and rear tires simultaneously.� As best as we know, this has never happened on a ride.� Had this happened on a Lights & Pizza ride, Ray would be well-ahead in the ques for the Golden Tube award.� Anyhow, this makes Ray a true Legend in the annals of Frederick Pedalers history.� It is very possible that, in the other Universe, Jeff "Bike Lust" Johnson encountered those flat tires, but not in this one.

Once Ray had repaired his tires, we noticed that the road where we had stopped - and would have missed otherwise, was on our cue sheet.� So we took the turn here and found ourselves back on the route, adding only about 4 miles.

We reached the Sheetz on route 30 in Gettysburg.� I had to go home and put my bike back in my van and headed home with 45 miles.� The remainder of the riders rode the rest of the cue sheet back to McSherrystown for a total of about 54 miles.

I just spoke to Steve with the Hanover club; it has not rained up in his area since about 10 pm last night; the back roads are damp now, I cannot say how they will be at 0930.� I will be up there at the McSherrystown start at or near 0930.
