OK Bill.... We'll move on from Bobke. By the way, have you ever
wanted to fly a plane? RB
Check this....
According to the largest risk consultation firm in the US[i] and a
noted Australian statistician[ii], this is the rank of these
activities, in fatalities per million hours:
#1 = Small planes: 15.6 fatalities per million hours;
#2 = On-road motorcycling, 8.8;
#3 = Swimming, 1.07;
#4 = Walking near traffic, 0.8;
#5 = Bicycling, 0.26 to 0.41 fatalities per million hours
In other words, cycling is the safest of all of these activities, on
a per-hour basis.
By the way, just "living" comes out to 1.53 fatalities per million
hours. It seems that cycling is, on average, much safer than many
other things you might do with your time!

I am thinking that it is Bill Preston, shortly after the "Duct Tape
Incident of 1982" when he was kicked out of the Tour for using duct
tape to tow a French teammate in the team time trial. The French were
quite embarassed that a famed French racer would need assistance from a

We will miss you, Milton. Enjoy FL - Anne & Fred Abeles are somewhere in FL now and won't be back for a while. Enjoy the warm weather & please bring some back with you.
Hi folks; here is the last update on the meeting of the Frederick
Pedalers.
(1) We have a full slate of candidates, so there's no chance of anyone
getting roped into serving this year. Sorry.
(2) We will hold the meeting at the William Talley Recreation Center,
121 N. Bentz St., in Frederick, 21701, on March 11, at 12:30 pm. Jill
DiMauro from Proteus Bicycles will be our featured speaker.
http://ts.rtvpix.com/tour/BU/tour.view.php?utl=BU-0548-W17IQI-01
A Map is on the web site of the Talley Recreation Center.
Enter the Talley center at the rear of the building. This brings you in
at the basement level. A registration desk is on your left as you walk
through the doors.
Proceed straight ahead, past all the exercise equipment. Follow the
main hallway all the way to the end. The meeting will be in Classroom
A.
(3) Food: we'll order pizza and salad stuff; if you would like to drag
along a dessert you are most invited to do so.
(4) Riding there: There will likely be a ride from the Talley Rec
Center beginning several hours before the meeting. Keep your eyes
peeled for an e-mail. The weather for Saturday is currenttly looking
fantastic.
(5) Yahoo group - by now you should have received an invite to our new
yahoo group. This will make it much easier for us to set up impromptu
rides, swap advice, etc. We may switch to this as our primary means of
e-mail communications to the club members. It is much easier for us
that way. If you've not received an invite & wish one, let me know &
we'll send one out to you.

To All Frederick Pedalers Members -
We've received an email inquiry from outside to club from someone looking to
borrow or rent a road bike during the month of April.
This young lady is participating in the Hampden-Sydney College Sprint
Triathlon in Farmville, VA, on April 30th. She is from Hagerstown and has
been preparing for this event since December by running, swimming, and
cycling at the Hagerstown YMCA and running and using a mountain bike to
train outdoors as the weather permits. She is hoping to rent or borrow a
road bike around the first part of April so she can train on it and use it
in the event on the 30th.
If anyone knows of an available road bike that might suit this scenario,
please contact me and I will put you in touch with her.
Thanks

Don give up on your computer yet. I think that when you string a route
together with gmap, you are linking a lot of straight lines and measuring
them. Unless you really go to town with a million segments, what your
wheels on the ground cover is more acurate. I find that my GPS track is
often just a hair under what my bike computer reads, but my bike computer
compares favorably with my car odometer.

I went out to ride today, but I had a flat on my regular bike. I
figured that I might have trouble getting home for dinner in time if I
stopped to fix it, so I took my old bike that does not have a cycle
computer. When I got home, I traced my route in the Gmap pedometer

I went out to ride today, but I
had a flat on my regular bike. I figured that I might have trouble
getting home for dinner in time if I stopped to fix it, so I took my
old bike that does not have a cycle computer. When I got home, I traced
my route in the Gmap pedometer mentioned in the February newsletter. It
worked great. My trip was 15.2 miles.

Bill,
I'm curious about the dress code for the meeting. Perhaps sandals,
beads, and a T-dyed shirt?

snip... Proteus' décor resembles a cross between a coffee shop and a
mechanic's shop.
Decorations include:
o A bread machine and an espresso maker next to the cash register.
o Antique bikes that line the walls, including a tricycle form the
1880's
o Couches, chairs, and bongo drums .....snip
.....Actually only one of them.
I have a 1969 Schwinn Twinn Tandem that is in running condition with a
seasoned but acceptable appearance. I will try to post a picture in
the photo section. It's fun, but I need room in the garage. Asking
$250. Send me an email if interested.
Thanks, RB
I think we should allow items for sale - as long as they pertain to
cycling. I don't think I should be selling any bowling balls there. I
shall see if the officers agree.

Brian, Joan and John have all crossed over, while Bob is still out
there waiting to take the plunge.
One question for the group.... Should we allow members to use the
list serve to offer items for sale? Seems reasonable and easy to
control if it does get out of hand. Also, I guess we should ask
everyone to keep the banter family friendly.
With regard to executive compensation, I doubt Bill is going to budge
unless there are concessions in the dental plan and you give back the
company cars.

I tried on online calendar for the club's web site a while back, but it
was too labor intensive. This one is nice and easy.
