I rode W -> E on the Northern Tier (Bikecentennial Route, as it was called then); Anacortes WA to Wheaton MD in July-August 1989.  I cannot address any Transamerica Trail specifics, but I can address trip planning, etc.  I have a friend who lives in Calvert County who rode TransAm in 1988 that I can probably hook you up with.

 

I can say that, if you ride it, it might be one of the most difficult challenges you've ever undertaken, but equivalently rewarding.
