Bill,
Try this.....
Count the number of teeth on the smallest cog of your cassette. Now count the
number of teeth in your head. They should be equal. If not, remove surplus
teeth until you acheive a balance.

We've had Floyd on the brain for a little while, so here's something to ponder.
Mainly, I'll address this to Randy, as he has helped out mechanically at
various bike rodeos and the like. Everyone else is free and encouraged to chime
in.
I wanted to change out my Cannondale's inner chainwheel from a 42-tooth to a
39-tooth. My Trek's has a 39 inner cog and I really like it.
So I got out my hacksaw and took off three teeth. Now, before anyone tells me
how dumb that is, listen to how I did it. I was smart enough not to cut off
three adjacent teeth. I cut off three equally-separated teeth. Sixty degrees
apart. Pretty smart, huh?
But now, after reinstalling the new 39-tooth chainring, I find it feels the
same on hills. Not only that, my shitfting has suffered. It's a little *cranky*.
Any thoughts, Randy?
Also, I superglued the three removed teeth onto the outer ring to change it
from a 52 to a 55. Watch out on those downhills, I am going to kick some serious
@$$!
