Ok
We had a pretty killer game on Thursday, It went on far longer than any
other game there, and It was getting pretty dark by the end. We seemed
to pretty much trade points at least until 6-6, then I think we managed
to pull away by to or 3 to take the half, however they managed to bring
it back 9-8 I believe. Thankfully we kept our heads, and kept
possession with the end in sight, and won a good 4 or so points in a
row.
The game was pretty intense, they were a strange mix of beginners and
experienced, but they had a few nippy guys that pulled a few nice crazy
floaty hucks out of the bag. It was fairly upwind-downwind (though we
seemed to always trade points scoring upwind) and about half the time
zone was played (mmm, my favourite style of play, never knowing what D
or O you’re going to face!).
We played really well, we grew a lot of strength from having
continuity, though I think people were reluctant to sub on and off
after being used to having to spend so much time off the pitch (make
sure you get on guys and gals!). Our O was patient and great, something
that I really liked was just the lack of bad choices. People make
mistakes and drop catches/fluff throws, but when you turn over and can
honestly say that was the right thing to do, and 99/100 it would have
worked, then there’s no shame in that. And I saw a lot of that.
Our D was also grand, often our zone clamped down so hard, that they
had no choice but to do a poor huck into the wind, that we really put
the effort to bid on. The times we did get caught out were due to
overconfidence, and getting broken through trying to get a point block
or poaching off our man and trying to do too much. Unfortunately it was
generally devastating, and that was how we let a lot of points go.
Things got a little heated at one point, but it’s a good experience to
learn from. I don’t think it was by any means entirely the other teams
fault. Try and think back to what you did, how you behaved, if you
would have done anything differently. And, most of all, try and look at
yourself objectively. Sometimes I think its very easy to think that
what you do or say is justified, but if you saw someone else doing it
you would be annoyed.
So my current favourite saying : SOTG takes work. Work at it!
Think about all the catching fouls/throwing fouls/pick rules you were
involved in. ts absolutely great to be (pretty much) able to quote the
rule when you need to. Look ‘em up!
Anyway a really good game, loads of effort was put in, and we looked a
lot more like a coherent team than we have in previous weeks.
