PLEASE DISTRIBUTE
We regret to announce that the USJA National
Symposium scheduled for February 16-20, 2006, has been
cancelled due to the recent devastation of New Orleans
by Hurricane Katrina. As part of the relief effort,
Carnival Cruise Line is making the Sensation and two
other cruise ships available to house those left
homeless by the storm, and they have cancelled cruises
on these vessels for the next six months. Carnival
will be sending refunds to all those who have made
cruise deposits in the next two to four weeks.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those whose
lives have been upended by this disaster. We urge
everyone who is able to contribute to the relief
effort--the need is great.
We will set another date and location for the
Symposium later this year. If you are interested in

For Immediate Release
September 4, 2005

Nicole.Jomantas@...
(Miami, Fla.) – Watching 17-year-old Bobby Lee (North
Lauderdale, Fla./Ki-Itsu-Sai/81kg) fight – and win –
match after match at Sunday’s Ladder Tournament at
Florida International University, one starts to
wonder: “Does the guy ever lose?”
The answer to that question: Not recently. Today’s win
marks Lee’s third senior title in just over a week as
he won the 73kg division at Saturday’s Fall Classic
National Championships as well as the same division at
last week’s Golden State Open in Glendora, Calif.
The trio of wins are Lee’s first titles on the senior
level while he has swept through the junior circuit
winning the Triple Crown of Judo (three junior
national championship events) as well as the Junior
U.S. Open in August.
His success at the Ladder, a senior elite level point
tournament where athletes who do not already have
points in the weight class that they enter compete for
national ranking points, also guarantees him an
invitation to the Senior U.S. Open, October 1-2 in
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. where he will compete against a
world-class field at an event that draws Olympians and
World Team members from more than 15 countries each
year.
“I think [the U.S. Open] will be hard, but I’m looking
forward to it,” said Lee who recently moved with his
family from Hatfield, Pa. to North Lauderdale to train
with 2004 Pan American Juvenile Judo Championships
Coach Jhonny Prado (North Lauderdale, Fla.)
Since his club’s creation in 2000, Prado has trained
some of the top young talent in the United States as
well as athletes from South America.
In fact, Lee is one of three athletes, all from
Ki-Itsu-Sai, to win gold medals at both the Ladder and
Saturday’s Fall Classic National Championships. Lee’s
teammate Jeanette Rodriguez (North Lauderdale, Fla.)
won 52kg division Sunday at the Ladder to go with her
48kg title from the Fall Classic while Francesca
Durand (North Lauderdale, Fla.) completed the same
feat, first at 52kg Saturday and then moving up to
57kg Sunday.
And in addition to his weekend collection of hardware,
Lee also was named Outstanding Male Player of the
Tournament as he went undefeated in his division
before throwing local athlete Shawn Blakey (Miami,
Fla./Florida International University Judo Club) for
Ippon in less than a minute in the final.
Seventeen-year-old Hannah Martin (Burnt Hills,
N.Y./Judo America) avenged her bronze medal finish at
the Fall Classic at 57kg by winning both the gold
medal at 63kg and winning Outstanding Female Player of
the tournament honors.
In doing so, Martin defeated Wendy Scholz (Iowa City,
Iowa/Judo America) twice in the double elimination
final.
Saturday Scholz had shut Martin out of the 57kg finals
en route to her gold medal win and her own Outstanding
Female Player of the tournament award.
“Yesterday was a big motivator for me,” Martin said.
“I hate losing and it made me want to come back today
and do better.”
Martin’s coach Jim Hrbek, praised the advances made by
the teen recently.
“Hannah’s made tremendous progress this year.
Obviously she was disappointed yesterday, but she
pulled it back together and had a great day,” said
Hrbek the 1992 Olympic Women’s Judo Team Coach and USA
Judo Junior Committee Chairman. “It’s easy to win when
you’re having a good day, but to come back and win is
even more impressive.”

Junior Athletes Dominate Fall Classic Nationals
(Miami, Fla.)
A look at the final results from Saturday's Fall
Classic National Championships reads like a who's who
of junior judo players as some of the top young
judokas in the country made their presence known at
this Senior D Level Elite Tournament, one of the top
four judo tournaments in the nation.
Similar to the summer junior season, Jhonny Prado?s
(North Lauderdale, Fla.) Ki-Itsu-Sai athletes claimed
four of 16 gold medals and nine medals overall.
Ki-Itsu-Sai's Jeanette Rodriguez (North Lauderdale,
Fla./48kg.), Bobby Lee (North Lauderdale, Fla./73kg.)
and Francesca Durand (North Lauderdale, Fla.) all won
the Triple Crown of Judo (three different junior
National Championship Events) and the Junior U.S. Open
in the months prior to their wins today.
For 15-year-old Rodriguez, Saturday's results add to
both her #2 national senior ranking as well as her #1
national junior ranking behind 2005 World Team member
Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif./East Bay Judo
Institute)
"Today went really well," Rodriguez said. "There's
still room for improvement though and there's some
things I want to work on and some techniques I'd like
to see get better."
As the second-ranked athlete in her division,
Rodriguez also looks ahead to future competition,
including the E-Level Dallas Invitational in
November and the 2006 Pan American Junior
Championships to be held in March in Miami, as well as
beyond.
"Sayaka's definitely the top of 48s right now, but I
hope one day to be able to make an Olympic Team," she
said.
Lee's division was one of the largest in the
tournament, including #2 ranked Richard Cohen (Buffalo
Grove, Ill./Cohen's Judo) who lost in his
fourth round to eventual bronze medalist Bobby
Yamashita (Northglenn, Colo./Northglenn Judo Club).
Lee also defeated former World Team Member
Taylor Takata (Wahaiawa, Hawaii/Brownsville CODP) by
Ippon during his undefeated day. The 17-year-old
continues to rapidly climb the senior roster, claiming
his second win in as many weeks following last week's
victory at the Golden State Open.
Durand recovered from a loss to Natalie LaFon
(National City, Calif./Judo America), a silver
medalist at the 2005 National Championships, in her
third round to defeat LaFon twice in the finals and
claim gold.
Daimisy Porras (North Lauderdale, Fla.) won the
44kg. round-robin contest over Ki-Itsu-Sai teammate
Veronica Prado (North Lauderdale, Fla.)
Youth wasn't the only story of the day as 2004
Olympian Rhadi Ferguson (Boca Raton,
Fla./IntoCombat/100kg.) finished his judo career with
one final gold medal
"I wanted to establish myself as the best 100kg.
player in the country and that's just what I did,"
Ferguson said.
Although Ferguson fought his last match today, he
will continue to be involved in the judo community as
a trainer for judo players and mixed martial artists.
One of Ferguson's former rivals at 100kg., 34-year-old
Michael Prieditis (Raeford, N.C./Fayetteville Fort
Bragg Judo Club) upgraded to the heavyweight division
(+100kg.) prior to the Fall Classic, but fell short
of winning his new class as he lost in the final to
2004 World Junior Team member J. Daniel McCormick
(Arlington, Texas/Bedford Kodoka).
Outstanding Male and Female Players of the Tournament
were Athens Olympian Rick Hawn (Wakefield,
Mass./Pedro's Judo Club/81kg.) and Wendy Scholz
(Iowa City, Iowa/Judo America/57kg.)
Hawn went undefeated in his division while Scholz
defeated Angelica Delgado (North Lauderdale,
Fla./Ki-Itsu-Sai) twice in the double elimination
final.
Tomorrow, more than 150 athletes will compete in the
Ladder Tournament, a senior elite level point
tournament (Level E) where athletes who do not
already have points in the weight class that they
enter compete for national ranking points and placers
qualify for spots in the U.S. Open, October 1-2 in Ft.
Lauderdale, Fla. This tournament is considered to be
the first step for elite athletes as they enter a
new weight division and have the opportunity to be
scouted by national level coaches.
Who: 150+ elite judo players.
What: Fall Classic National Championships and
Ladder Tournament
When: September 4: 10 a.m. ? 6 p.m., preliminary
and final matches (Ladder)
Please note: Matches run consecutively, concluding
time is approximate.

Panther Arena, Miami, Fla.

Subject: Sensei Guy Matthew's
Sensei Guy Matthews was a life long student of
Judo. He took the time from his family life to teach
Judo to a bunch of kids and adults that learned the
traditional ways of this sport. Sensei Guy Matthews
and Sensei George Nakamura taught in the Northeast
Florida region for over 30 years. Their life long
teachings has changed the lives of many people to be
better judoka's, students, and parents. For all that
knew Sensei Guy Matthews, you knew that when he
spoke with you, he was always smiling, giving advice,
or making a joke. He had a multitude of friends
throughout the state of Florida and I know that
everyone that knew him will truly miss him and his
sense of humor.
Mrs. Matthews would like to thank everyone in the
Judo family for their prayers. If any Judo Club would
like to send a card to Mrs. Matthews please send it
to:
Michael Furuya
5956 Buckley Drive
Jacksonville, Florida 32244
I am sure that Mrs. Matthews will enjoy the cards
as well as seeing how much her husband has affected
the life's of all Florida Judoka's.
Thank you all for your time in reading this post.
God Bless you all and your families.
Respectfully,
Sensei Michael Furuya

Cash crunch challenges judo star
Sharon Robb
Sports Columnist
August 21, 2005
Rhadi Ferguson of Boca Raton is a victim of
circumstances and and U.S. Olympic budget woes.
One of judo's most colorful athletes, Ferguson, 30,
was ranked No. 1 and represented the United States
at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens.
Ferguson qualified for the Sept. 8-11 World Judo
Championships in Cairo, Egypt. It was to be his last
major event, but he's not going.
Without funding from the U.S. Olympic Committee,
Ferguson gave up his spot on the team because he
can't afford the $3,500 trip.
His car broke down two weeks ago, and he is still
paying off credit card debt incurred while trying to
qualify for the 2004 Games. The Howard University
star in track, football and wrestling gave up a
$70,000 job with Texas Instruments to chase his
Olympic dream for six years.
He's now a full-time trainer and co-owner of
INTOCOMBAT at the Institute of Human Performance in
Boca Raton.
USA Judo executive director Jose Rodriguez said
Friday that Ferguson's spot on the team will be
offered to the next available athlete.
Ferguson injured his shoulder and had surgery after
the Athens Games. He couldn't compete in any major
judo tournaments to be ranked, a stipulation for
funding, Rodriguez said.
Ferguson said he was told he would receive some
funding based on past performance, including his
Olympic appearance. He was also an alternate at the
2000 Olympics.
"There is no way for us to make an exception,"
Rodriguez said. "He didn't meet the requirements.
It's unfortunate we can't help him, but if we bent
the rules for him, we would have to for everyone
else on the team. Rhadi has always been a great
representative of the sport. If I were him, I would
be disappointed, too. I know he worked hard and
sacrificed."
If Rodriguez, a former South Florida resident and
track coach named executive director four months
ago, has his way there will be more money for
athletes training for the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. He
is launching the Adopt-An-Athlete program in judo
where companies, professionals and private citizens
can finance athletes through tax-deductible
donations.
"If we followed the Olympic mandate, we would only
fund athletes who win medals," Rodriguez said. "We
want to be able to send all our athletes to
tournaments to get the experience for the Olympics
and world championships."
Despite the lack of financial support, Ferguson
continues to be a spokesman and role model for the
sport. A few weeks ago, Ferguson, a USOC athlete rep
and Director of Operations for Florida Judo Inc., spent
the day talking with kids and passing out medals at
the Tropical Games of the Palm Beaches.
"There are droves of kids out there who have the
talent to make it in this sport, but they need the
support and leadership," Ferguson said. "I still
love this sport."
