DISCLAIMER:
I in NO WAY am representing FJI (Florida Judo, Inc.) when I do these lists of
upcoming Judo events. It is the Coaches, Players, Officials, etc. responsibility
to verify if the event is sanctioned or not. You can usually tell by asking for
a sanction number and which organization is sanctioning the event. I AM just
passing on the information that is passed on to me.
Thanks.

Due to the recent cancellation of the October 10 UF Judo tournament, Northern FL and Southern GA judo clubs will instead hold an intense judo seminar on this date at Jesup Judo Academy.  Jesup Judo Academy is located inside World Gym Jesup in Jesup, GA, app. halfway between Jacksonville and Savannah.  Jesup is located directly on Hwy 301, 40 miles north of the FL-GA border.  All FL and GA clubs are invited.  The dojo has an Olympic-sized mat and a separate room for newaza training, as well as full locker room and shower facilities.

Clinicians will include current Pan-Am and World Masters Champions.  Gripping, transitions, and combinations for new pant-grip rules will be emphasized. A great deal of time will be devoted to randori, with opportunity for dozens of matches per attendee (in contrast to the 2-4 per player at a local tournament).  Several local juniors have been named to the Pan-Am Infantil team and will be fine-tuning their techniques to prepare.

Date:  Saturday, October 10

Time:  9 am for kids, adults/advanced will continue from 10-1:30

Location:  Jesup Judo Academy, inside World Gym Jesup; 180 Sunset Blvd (just south of Hwy 341), Jesup, GA, 31545

Phone:  (912) 427-9220 (World Gym); (912) 424-9086 (cell)

Cost:  $15 (family rates available)

After-party:  Barbecue/Swim party following the workout at the Lentz's home nearby; address and directions available at World Gym

See you on the mat!

U.S. Women Sweep Golds on Final Day of the U.S. Open

(San Jose, Calif.) - Five U.S. players won gold medals on Saturday during the
final day of U.S. Open competition at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center,
including a four-player sweep of the women's divisions.

After four consecutive years of silver and bronze medal finishes at the Open,
two-time World Team member Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National
Training Site at San Jose State University) finally broke through to the top
step of the podium in the 57kg division.

"It's great fighting at home. I was so excited and I love fighting in front of
my family and friends," Malloy said of competing in front of a hometown crowd.
"The only bad thing is it's hard to think of it like a big tournament just
because you're sleeping in your own bed and I event worked the day before, but
you just have to adjust your mindset that it really is like an event in another
city."

Malloy had a first round bye and then armbarred Veronica Graves (Colorado
Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center
/ Boulder Judo Training Center) to advance to the semifinals against Hannah
Martin (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason
Morris Judo Center).

Although Martin defeated Malloy in the semifinals of the 2008 U.S. Open, Malloy
earned the win this time and her final match was set against 2008 Senior
Nationals silver medalist Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla. / USA Judo National
Training Site at North Miami).

Malloy forced Delgado into two penalties to take an early lead before throwing
the 2009 Junior World Team member for a waza-ari (half-point) score. Delgado
was given a third penalty that ended the match with a win and gold medal for
Malloy.

"It's been a goal of mine to win this for a really long time and you get really
close, but even one loss and you can end up with a bronze," Malloy said. "I was
definitely more motivated after the Worlds [in August] and I just kept training
really hard and pushing through."

One of Malloy's teammates at the World Championships in Rotterdam was
15-year-old Katelyn Bouyssou (Hope, R.I. / NYAC / Mayo Quanchi Judo Club) who
won her first U.S. Open gold as a 48kg player on Saturday.

Bouyssou defeated Marie-Pier Gauvreau (CAN) and Diana Ortiz (VEN) after a
first-round bye to advance to the finals against Ann Shiraishi (San Francisco,
Calif. / East Bay Judo Institute).

The match was a repeat of the 2008 U.S. Open final, but, while Shiraishi
dominated that fight, it was Bouyssou who controlled this one. After taking a
penalty lead, Bouyssou countered a drop seoi nage (dropping shoulder throw)
attempt by Shiraishi with a throw for a waza-ari score that Shiraishi couldn't
overcome.

"I'm cool as a cucumber coming to these tournaments now and I'm not nervous like
I was when I was little," Bouyssou said. "I think my experience at the Worlds
made me a lot more mature, like there was a time when she almost threw me and
even a couple months ago I would've panicked, but I held it together."

A former 48kg player, Jeanette Rodriguez (Davie, Fla. / USA Judo National
Training Site at North Miami) won her first U.S. Open title as a 16-year-old in
2006. Rodriguez has since moved up to 52kg, but, after two early round wins,
she found herself competing against Natalie Lafon (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo
National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center), a former opponent of
Rodriguez's at 48kg.

Competing in the semifinals, neither Lafon nor Rodriguez scored during the
regulation period, but Rodriguez was quick to attack in Golden Score (overtime),
throwing Lafon during the first exchange.

In the finals, Rodriguez and six-time Pan Am medalist Flor Velasquez (VEN) went
through both regulation and Golden Score periods without scoring, so the
referees granted the decision unanimously to Rodriguez.

In the 44kg division, 18-year-old Taylor Ibera (Honolulu, Hawaii / Hawaii Tenri)
avenged her Junior World Trials loss earlier this season to Veronica Prado
(Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) when she
threw Prado for a yuko score to win her second U.S. Open title.

A 90kg player who placed fifth on Friday, Iavor Kostadinov (Colorado Springs,
Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center / Boulder
Judo Training Center) won his first U.S. Open medal with a gold in the Open
division.

After a first-round bye, Kostadinov won his next two matches against Pablo
Figueroa (PUR) and Luis Bermeo (ECU) to advance to the finals against Leonardo
Allen (BRA). Allen, a 73kg player, upset 2008 Olympic heavyweight Daniel
McCormick (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) when he threw
McCormick for ippon in the semifinals.

Allen led their final match when he threw Kostadinov for a yuko (quarter-point)
score. Allen was given two penalties and Kostadinov one to tie the score.
Kostadinov threw Allen for a waza-ari score in the final 30 seconds of the match
to take the lead.

Both athletes were given penalties in the last 10 seconds for stalling, however,
which gave Kostadinov the second waza-ari score he needed to earn the gold.

Vitaliy Vanyan (North Hollywood, Calif. / Mojica Judo Club) also won his first
U.S. Open medal with a silver in the 60kg division. Vanyan won his first three
matches to advance to the finals where lost by a waza-ari score to Issam Nour
(FRA).

Bencosme and Harrison Win U.S. Open, Sell Takes Silver

(San Jose, Calif.) - The assistant coach for the USA Judo National Training Site
at San Jose State University came out to compete at the U.S. Open in his
hometown of San Jose with no expectations, but finished the day with a gold
medal in front of a crowd filled with friends and family.

Jose Bencosme (San Jose, Calif.) had always been a fixture in the top five at
the U.S. Open, but on Friday he made his first medal a gold one with a win over
Mervin Rodriguez (VEN) in the 81kg division.

"I usually am good for one or two wins at the Open, so after my first match I
was like 'Ok, this is good.' Then I had MacBaisey and I usually fight him pretty
well, so I was still ok. Then I beat the Japanese player and all of a sudden I
was in the finals and then I started to get a little bit nervous," Bencosme
said.

After a first-round bye, Bencosme won matches against AJ Lupie (Aurora, Ill. /
Fox Valley Judo & Jujitsu), 2008 Senior Nationals medalist Ross MacBaisey
(Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. / San Shi) and Kazuma Katabuchi (JPN) to advance to the
finals. His opponent, Rodriguez, also had an excellent day, upsetting 2008
Olympian Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site
at the Olympic Training Center / Boulder Judo Training Center) in an overtime
semifinal match.

"We do so many seminars with all the local clubs and kids that I knew a lot of
them would be here and then after this morning people kept calling and telling
me they were coming to see me fight in the finals. It was here in San Jose, so
I felt like I had to win," Bencosme joked after the final.

Bencosme started his final match well against Rodriguez, throwing him after just
over a minute and transitioning into a pin. Rodriguez escaped after only seven
seconds and Bencosme was left without a score.

Within a minute, Rodriguez was awarded a waza-ari (half-point) for a throw that
was later ruled as worth no score by the jury. Bencosme got on the board
mid-way through the match when he threw Rodriguez with a fireman's carry for a
waza-ari score, but with two penalties of his own, he knew he had to keep
attacking to guarantee the win.

The final minute was an exciting one with several near scores until the clock
ran out with Bencosme winning by the waza-ari.

"He's a lot longer than I am, so I had to improvise on some of my throws, but
I'm just happy I had the technique to carry me through it," Bencosme said.

Bencosme is one of more than a dozen athletes from SJSU competing this weekend
with several fighting on Saturday, including World Team members Marti Malloy
(57kg) and Jeff Fong (66kg).

"I still compete here and there, but my number one priority is to make sure San
Jose's program keeps getting better. If it takes me competing to set a good
example for the kids I'll do it," Bencosme said. "I hope it motivates the team
and gives them more confidence tomorrow so they can know that all the things
we've been working on really do work."

While Bencosme was enjoying his first Open win, 19-year-old Kayla Harrison
(Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) added her fifth title
to the collection after winning gold medals in 2006, 2007 and 2008 in which she
took both the 78kg and Open divisions titles.

After a first-round bye in the 78kg division, the reigning Junior World Champion
threw Allison Clifford (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at
San Jose State University) and pinned her for ippon (instant win).

Harrison's final match pitted her against three-time Pan Am medalist Keivi Pinto
(VEN), but she held control over the 90 second match in which she pinned Pinto
for the win.

Katie Sell (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the
Olympic Training Center) advanced to the finals of the 70kg division for the
first time after winning bronze in 2008, but lost the match when Marie-Eve De
Villers-Matte (CAN) threw her for ippon.

U.S. athletes also won 10 bronze medals in eight weight divisions. Competition
continues on Saturday with the men's and women's lightweight and Open divisions.

DISCLAIMER:
I in NO WAY am representing FJI (Florida Judo, Inc.) when I do these lists of upcoming Judo events. It is the Coaches, Players, Officials, etc. responsibility to verify if the event is sanctioned or not. You can usually tell by asking for a sanction number and which organization is sanctioning the event. I AM just passing on the information that is passed on to me.
Thanks.
