Former NCJA President and Cumberland College Coach "Doc" O.J. Helvey Passes Away

Colorado Springs, Colo.) - USA Judo is saddened to announce that Dr. Omer James
Helvey, known as "Doc" to his students, passed away on Friday at the age of 86
at Williamsburg Nursing Home in Williamsburg, Ky. The founder of the judo
program at Cumberland College in 1963, Dr. Helvey coached the team until his
retirement in 1986. Among the players he coached during his career were
Olympians Doug Nelson, Eddie Liddie, Leo White and Joe Marchal; and former elite
athletes Tommy Dyer, Brian Germain, Mitch Lewis, Jean-Claude Liddie and Kris
Ringgold.

One of the principal players in the collegiate judo movement, Dr. Helvey was the
first collegiate coach to lead his team to upset the previously undefeat San
Jose State University at the Collegiate National Championships.

Dr. Helvey was a past president of the National Collegiate Judo Association and
an NAIA representative to the U.S. Olympic Committee; however, among all of his
accolades and accomplishments, he will be best remembered for his courage,
honor, humor and positive influence on the lives of so many.

Dr. Helvey is survived by his wife Margorie Lee Wells Helvey, three children,
three grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Youth and Scholastic Day 2 Results

(York, Pa.) - Nearly 250 athletes competed during the second day of the USA Judo
Youth and Scholastic National Championships on Sunday in York, Pa.

After winning a berth on the Cadet World Team on Saturday, 14-year-old Katelyn
Bouyssou (Hope, R.I. / Mayo Quanchi Judo) won the 48kg IJF-Junior (under-20)
division on Sunday. The gold medal is the 24th junior national title for
Bouyssou who now holds the record for the U.S. player with the most junior
national titles in history.

Bouyssou went undefeated during the day, winning four matches and beating 2008
Junior World Team member Angela Creutzberger (Ballston Lakes, N.Y. / USA Judo
National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) twice by ippon (instant
win), to be named the Outstanding Female Competitor of the tournament.

Andrew Porras (Hialeah Gardens, Fla. / Budokan Judo) earned Outstanding Male
Competitor honors after going undefeated to win his second gold medal in the
IJF-Junior 73kg division in as many years.

Laquinta Allen (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla. / Onikusu Judo), a former Pan Am Juvenile
medalist, moved down to 70kg where she defeated 2008 Junior World Team member
Helen Delpopolo (Westfield, N.J. / Cranford Judo) in two of her five matches to
win the Female Best Technique Award.

A former Senior Pan Am bronze medalist in the 55kg division, 17-year-old Kyle
Taketa (Torrance, Calif. / Gardena Judo) moved up to 66kg this year where he won
the division and the Male Best Technique award.

One of Taketa's opponents, Yan Kafarskiy (Queen Richmond Hill, N.Y. / Spartak
Sports Club) was given the Male Fighting Spirit Award after he fought back from
breaking a finger in a preliminary round to win a bronze medal.

After just a year in the sport, Ashlyn White (Pembroke Pines, Fla. / Panther
Judo) won her 38kg division Intermediate 2 (11-12-year-olds) division as well as
the Female Fighting Spirit Award.

In other divisions, Crystal Butts (Fontana, Calif. / West Coast Judo Training
Center) upset 2008 Junior World Team member Chrissy Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii /
Hawaii Tenri), winning two of their three matches in the 57kg division after
Chow moved up from 52kg. Butts won their first final in the true double
elimination tournament, forcing Chow to drop down to the repechage where she
beat Sarah Neyra (Boca Raton, Fla. / Keria Judo Club) to advance to a second
match against Butts. This time Chow won to force a third match where neither
player scored in either regulation or Golden Score (overtime) periods; therefore
the referees to decide the match which they awarded by a 2-1 decision to Butts.

Matthew Degrate (Kent Wash, / Kent Schools #415 Judo Team) entered the +100kg
division unseeded as this was his first major junior event, but dominated his
opponents, winning four matches by ippon (instant win). Among his victories,
Degrate upset 2008 Junior World Team member Colin Robinson (Colorado Springs,
Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) and
Doyle Richeson (Burleson, Texas / Ruben Martin Training Center).

Collegiate novice divisions also were held on Sunday. Combined with the results
from the elite divisions on Saturday, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point
won 12 total medals. Penn State took second place with three medals and the
University of Tennessee placing third with three medals.

Carlos Moran (Clifton, N.J.) and Nancy Marroquin (Union City, N.J.), who won
their senior collegiate divisions on Saturday were named Best Collegiate Male

Fellow referees,
Attached are several documents.  The final and official IJF rule change
summary and some supplemental explanatory documents:  Kumi-kata and Negative
Judo.  Also attached is the USA Judo Referee Commission interpretation of the
new rules as reviewed and approved by USA Judo leadership.  Please share these
as widely as feasible with US judoka.  I am distributing them to all National
and higher US referees for whom I have eddresses.  Please note the effective
date of January 1, 2009 and the request to refrain from implementing them until
that date without express approval of the USA Judo head office.

If you have any questions regarding any of these, please 'reply' with those,
being as specific as possible, and I will attempt to get an answer to you.
However, be aware that the IJF is developing video examples of how they want
certain landings called and how they want the new boundary-rule implemented, so
this will be a work-in-progress (as rule-changes usually are) for several
months.

Olympic and Paralympic Athletes Host Judo Clinic at Tropical Elementary in Miami

(Colorado Springs, Colorado) - Four members of Team USA were on hand on Monday
to conduct a series of demonstrations at Tropical Elementary School in Miami,
Fla. Olympian Ryan Reser (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training
Site at the Olympic Training Center), Paralympian Myles Porter (Colorado
Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center)
and 2007 World Team member Jeanette Rodriguez (Davie, Fla. / Ki-Itsu-Sai) were
joined by 2008 Olympic Team Leader Leo White (Lilburn, Ga. / Waka Mu Sha) and
several local judo players as they conducted presentations to students in 20
different classes throughout the day.

The sessions involved both demonstrations of the sport of judo as well as
opportunities for students to try judo themselves. More importantly, students
learned how judo can help them improve their quality of life under challenging
physical circumstances.

"USA Judo is beginning a nationwide program to present the Olympic sport of judo
to special needs populations in our nation's school systems with the target
audience been the visually impaired. The goal is to find potential future
Paralympic judo athletes while providing the visually impaired and others
special need youth in the school systems with an opportunity to participate in
this great martial art," said USA Judo CEO Jose H. Rodriguez. "It is USA Judo's
hope that we can catch the interest of educators, administrators and community
leaders to support several pilot programs throughout Miami-Dade County."

Judo was introduced into the Paralympic Games in 1988 as one of the most easily
adaptable sports for blind and visually impaired children. With only minimal
adaptations needed, blind and visually impaired athletes compete alongside their
sighted peers in judo at tournaments of all sizes in the United States and
abroad.

A legally blind former high school wrestler who began training in judo in
college, Porter delivered a motivational message to all students that
disabilities don't hinder dreams and goals. Porter is currently ranked #4 in
the United States in his weight division and has aspirations of becoming the
first blind athlete to compete for the USA Judo Team at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Hi David, Could you please post this. Thanks!
_____________________________________________

To all Judoka who attended the recent Judo Clinic with Sensei Ohkawa,

I sincerely apologize for the delay in getting your clinic DVD to you. I have
recently been overwhelmed with work and with some health issues that have hit my
elderly parents. However, I will finish editing the DVDs this weekend, and will
start shipping them next week. As a expression of my thanks for your patience, I
am also including on the DVD highlights from the 2008 All Japan Championships. I
think everyone will enjoy this, along with the great Judo techniques
demonstrated by Sensei Ohkawa.

Thank you again for your support & patience!

Doug Clark

Athens Olympian Earns Doctorate

USA Judo congratulates 2004 Olympian Rhadi Ferguson (Titusville, Fla.) on
receiving his Doctorate of Philosophy in Education from Capella University on
March 14.

Ferguson's dissertation was entitled: Use of the Medicine Ball Super Arms
Protocol on the National Football League's 22-LB Repetition-To-Failure Bench
Press Test: Analysis of Effects.

"I would also like to express my appreciation to the United States Olympic
Committee and the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,
Colo. which created a healthy educational environment by providing computers,
Internet access, educational materials and a host of other amenities which made
possible my online learning and pursuing a doctorate degree while training for
the Olympics," Ferguson said. "I certainly did not take for granted the comfort
of late night snacks and coffee while studying."
