Forwarded to IJF International and Continental referees -
About two and half weeks ago Doc went into the hospital with
cancer – biopsies showed it was in the pancreas and liver. On
Saturday, we celebrated with him, his 89th birthday – he was
at home and on hospice. His whole family was there too. This
morning at 3:45 Doc died. He was ready and said his good-byes
on Saturday – he also laughed and smiled. His pain was being
maintained but he was a Doctor even to the end – he knew what
was happening and so it is a blessing that he did not suffer.
The Judo community has lost a great, great man – we who lived
near him and grew up with him as one of our senseis were very
fortunate and we know it. I first met Doc 44 years ago at
Ishikawa’s Dojo in Philadelphia. I suspect by now he is smoking
a cigar and Phyllis is talking his ear off – all good. .

Germains of Summerlin Judo Bring Home Double Gold
By BRIAN GERMAIN, Summerlin Judo
Published:
Saturday, February 14, 2009 10:09 AM EST
Summerlin Judo team of Bartow was led by Katie Germain with a double gold
performance at the Florida Open Judo Championships this past weekend in Pembroke
Pines.
Germain, 14, placed first in both the 15 to 16 year and 17 to 19 year 52 kg
divisions.
In addition to her double gold effort, she was also awarded the "Best Technique
Award" for the tournament.
"Obviously the whole team was very happy for Katie," her father, Coach Brian
Germain, said.
She secured decisive wins against some stiff competition which included Brianna
Padron of Pembroke Pines and Shea Favoirte of Clermont, both of whom are
nationally ranked in the top 10.
"I was happy to see her takedowns improve along with her matwork," Coach Germain
said. "Fabio Novaes BJJ has had an important role in Katie's greatly improved
grappling skills, too."
Brian Germain also took a double gold in the Maters 30+ years 100 kg and 100+ kg
divisions.
"The tournament director came to me and asked if I wanted to compete in the
heavyweight division, too," Coach Germain laughed. "I never have been able to
turn down a challenge very well."
"I should be careful what I ask for though. I fought and won all my six
matches, but at nearly 50 years old, I was feeling kind of sore afterwards.
Double golds always seem to ease the pain a bit."
"I'm just trying to live up to my motto, 'Old Guys Rule.'"
Both Germains have their eyes set on even bigger challenges in the coming
months.
Katie will return to the wrestling mat at the Florida State Girls Wrestling
Championships later this month and then the Scholastic National Judo
Championships in York, Pa., in March.
Her father is focusing on the World Masters Judo Championships being rescheduled
in the U.S. this summer.
"I know it's a different daddy/daughter thing to do, competing at grappling
events, but it is what we do," Coach Germain said.
"We have fun training and competing together and enjoy stepping up to the
challenges. I have to say that Katie is the best training partner I've ever
had."

Subject: Changed date for Greatest Camp On Earth
To all who have inquired about dates for the 2009 edition of The Greatest Camp
On Earth.
I've sent this letter to all who have inquired about this year's Camp dates.
National Judo events in the United States are carefully scheduled in order to
avoid date conflicts. Event sponsors, in cooperation with organizations such as
USJA, USJF, and USJI, along with state and local organizations, are vary careful
to avoid conflicts that might force participants to choose among events in which
they wish to participate.
Many months ago we selected June 18-21, 2009, as the dates for The Greatest Camp
On Earth. This is consistent with the dates we have used in earlier years, and
was coordinated among all sanctioning bodies and major Judo organizations. We
have published this date for many months and in many places.
Another event, the USJA Junior Natiionals, also a major event (though smaller
than The Greatest Camp), had -- almost equally early -- reserved and published
its dates for the July 4 weekend. A great many participants had made plans, and
travel arrangements, in order to attend both.
Within the last month, however, USJA management, including the management of the
USJA Junior Nationals, suddenly changed the date for the USJA Junior Nationals.
Without consultation or coordination, they changed it to the date already
reserved for The Greatest Camp On Earth.
This caused a great disturbance in our planning for The Greatest Camp. Many of
our instructors and participants, being national-level Judo people, had
committed for both events. Our management was in final stages of contracting
and committing funds for physical space and for services such as hotel
accommodations, meals, transportation, and so forth; and individuals had made
nonrefundable travel commitments.
There has been a great amount of telephoning and discussion during the past week
or so. USJA management refuses to reconsider and undo the sudden and
uncoordinated change. Therefore it is The Greatest Camp that must change,
however difficult this is for us.
Because of this, we have coordinated and reserved a new date for The Greatest
Camp in 2009. The new schedule is one week later than originally planned.
The Greatest Camp On Earth will take place in North Carolina from June 25
through June 28, 2009.
We know that this change will be an inconvenience for many of our loyal Campers
who come to Camp year after year. We are deeply regretful of the necessity, and
we apologize most sincerely. We hope to make it up by making this year's
Greatest Camp, as it has always been, bigger and better than the previous year's
Camp, and the best Judo experience of the year.

Rodriguez Becomes First U.S. Player to Win Two Medals at Junior Belgian Ladies'
Open
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - In 2007, then-16-year-old Jeanette Rodriguez (Davie,
Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) was one of two U.S.
players to climb the podium of the prestigious Junior Belgian Ladies' Open for
the first time in the event's history.
Two years later, the former Pan American Games bronze medalist has moved up in
weight from 48kg to 52kg, but was still considered to be one to watch for the
gold medal in Arlon on Saturday.
In a unique format, players must compete in round robin pools with the top two
players advancing into the main draw. Once in the draw, a player who loses
early may only fight through for bronze if her opponent advances to the final.
Rodriguez appeared to have little difficulty, winning her first match in the
pool and pinning Emily Hickman (GBR) in the second. Hickman, like Rodriguez was
a former 48kg player who also has moved up in weight, but had World Cup success
in 2008 when she won a silver medal at the Birmingham event.
After a first-round bye in the main draw, Rodriguez's momentum was stopped by
former 57kg player Carla Grol (NED) who defeated Rodriguez by a penalty that was
awarded with three seconds left on the clock.
Grol advanced to the finals, carrying Rodriguez through to the repechage where
she threw 2007 European U17 bronze medalist Kathrin Prill (GER) with a sode
(sleeve throw) for a yuko (quarter-point score).
The win moved Rodriguez into the evening finals against Laure Paquet, one of
Belgium's top senior players, who Rodriguez threw for ippon (instant win) in the
first 30 seconds of the match with an outer leg throw.
Mindy Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii / Hawaii Tenri) also competed in the 52kg division,
winning her first two matches in the pool to advance to the main draw.
Fourteen-year-old Chow, who placed second at the 2008 Senior U.S. Open, threw
2008 Swiss Senior National silver medalist Evelyne Tschopp early in their first
match with a left uchimata (inner thigh throw). Chow threw Anthea Reich (GER)
in the next round with a harai goshi (hip throw) to win by a yuko and advance to
the main draw. Chow and Paquet fought through both the regulation and Golden
Score periods of their match for a full 10 minutes before the referees awarded
the match to Paquet on a split decision.
Chow's Hawaii Tenri teammate Taylor Ibera (Honolulu, Hawaii) came out of the
48kg pool with two wins, defeating Anne-Sophie Jura (BEL) on penalties and
choking Amelia Cook (GBR). In the main draw, Ibera threw Katharina Menz (GER)
for ippon in overtime. In the next round, Ibera lost by ippon to eventual
bronze medalist Mandy Tjokroatmo (NED) and did not get carried through to the
repechage.
Veronica Prado (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North
Miami) advanced out of the 48kg pools with a 1-1 record. Prado was thrown for
ippon with a sumi gaeshi (sacrifice throw) by 2008 European U20 medalist Kay
Kraus (GER) in the first match. Prado then beat Daisy Van Loo (NED) on
penalties to advance to the main draw where she lost to eventual silver medalist
Verena Thumm (NED) in the first round and Melissa Munoz (FRA) in the repechage.
Prado's North Miami teammate Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla.) won both matches in
her 57kg pool, throwing Heather Fangnoul (BEL) with a sleeve throw for ippon and
defeating 2008 German Junior National Champion Katja Stefan (GER) on penalties.
In the main draw, Delgado defeated Wiebke Kaiser (GER) in the first round by
yuko (quarter-point) and waza-ari (half-point) scores. In the second round,
Delgado threw 2008 U.S. Open medalist Stefanie Tremblay (CAN) for ippon with an
outer leg throw for ippon, but lost in the quarter-finals to Shushana Hevondian
(UKR). Hevondian would go on to win the bronze medal, but her semifinal loss
eliminated Delgado.
In her first appearance in a major European event, Lydia Au (Chicago, Ill. /
Victorious Judo) split her pool play matches in the 57kg division, leading in
her match against Meghann Diez (BEL) by a yuko before ending the match with an
armbar, but losing by ippon to Anett Specht (GER). In the main draw, Au lost to
Sina Felske (GER) early in their first-round match.
Former Pan American Infantile Champion Carly Patton (Zephyrhills, Fla. / Del.
Diaz Mambi Training Center) also was making her European debut in the 57kg
division. The 14-year-old lost both of her pool play matches, first to Sarah
Ghysels (BEL) by ippon and then to Sonja Strohle (GER) by a waza-ari.
Competition continues on Sunday with the senior divisions.

An Open Letter to USA Judo Coaches from President Lance Nading
Greetings and Happy New Year to all of our USA Judo coaches. On behalf of the
Board of Directors, I want to wish you and your family the best of success and
blessings for this New Year.
Last year was a very productive and exciting one for USA Judo. We were involved
in a lot of activities leading up to our Team's successful results in the
Beijing Olympic Games. We had many great moments in our sport and we had some
challenges as well that have led to this Open Letter to our coaching community.
As we begin a new Olympic quadrennium, it is our hope to continue to move the
sport forward while learning from past mistakes and challenges. I am reaching
out to each of you as coaches and leaders in our sport in order to broach a
sensitive, yet important issue. I would like to address the issue of the
responsibility that each of you have to the athletes who have been entrusted to
your guidance and care.
It is no secret that these past few years, maybe due to the changes in our
society or whatever you want to put the blame to, we have had challenges in
controlling and guiding the youth of our sport. Today, I am putting the entire
organization on notice that these next four years will be different; we will be
expecting greater leadership, guidance and responsibility from each of you
coaches. We will expect that as you travel with your junior athletes to any one
of our events - be it our National Championships or a USA Judo sanctioned event
- that you take full charge and responsibility for the action of these athletes.
It is up to you - as the "parent inplace" - to ensure that these athletes
respect all of the laws and behave in a respectful and professional fashion on
and off the mat.
Further, I respectfully point out to all coaches, referees and officials that it
is within your duty and responsibility to report any unsafe or questionable
behavior by junior athletes to their respective coach and/or to tournament
officials. You and - all of us really - can no longer afford to say "They are
not one of my athletes, so it is not my problem as it is your problem.... Our
problem."
We will begin to be more aggressive in questioning coaches whose athletes are
reported to continue to show disrespect for the rules and the laws of USA Judo
and our nation. Our tolerance level to this behavior is now zero!
At the same time, I want to address the issue of coaches' professional behavior
on and off the practice and competition mat. As it relates to the on the mat
behavior during competitions, you have seen the new rule by the International
Judo Federation regarding coaches no longer being allowed matside at IJF events.
We are pleased to have been able to secure a waiver of this rule for national
events within the United States as we know that the behavior of our coaches
matside is one of which we are proud. We want to continue to have coaches
coaching matside here in the States as we believe this to be good for the
athletes and the sport; however, in order for this to continue in the United
States, we need to continue to have the cooperation of you the coaches. Please
remember that the misbehavior of a few may possibly impact the future of all. As
a bit of peer pressure sometimes goes a long way, don't be afraid to apply it
when necessary if it is for the
good of the sport and us all.
Finally, there is the issue of the professional relationship that a coach and an
athlete must have in order for a coach to be able to properly guide an athlete
in the sport. Obviously, any relationship between a minor athlete and his or her
coach that is not of a professional nature is not only unacceptable, but
criminal and illegal. I am addressing here more of the personal relationship
between an adult athlete and his or her coach. USA Judo frowns and discourages
any such relationships as it has proven to be time and again not to be the best
for all concerned, including the sport. Furthermore, this sort of relationships
places the coach, the dojo and the organization under potential liability that
no one wants or needs. This is one area where we can not make a demand or
control personal lives, but we will demand it from any coach who receives any
sort of remunerations from USA Judo.
In closing, I want to thank you - all of you - out there coaching in our great
sport of judo. What you do is not easy and none of you get paid enough for the
time, care and energy that you spend day to day, week to week and year to year.
We, as an organization, would not be here if it was not for the work you do in
your clubs and at the grassroots level, be it with junior athletes, senior
athletes, or masters. Yes, the challenges have been great, but the rewards have
been just as great or greater. Your work and dedication has brought us where we
are at, please continue your efforts so that this organization continues to grow
and be respected throughout our nation and the world.

Sir,
All well and good. Great lofty goals, but I address one issue and that is the perverts of judo who are messing with the minds and bodies of our young judokas. It was in the 80's that I called attention to two such persons, Flecher and Gelb. Why did it take so long for them to be removed from our sport and are they TRUELY removed. I am hearing that Gelb is still teaching, and if so why?
We cannot think lightly of these matters. I know that in some countries this reprehensible action is NOT frowned upon. But this is AMERICA and we have laws that are supposed protect our greatest national treasure, our youth. I believe we should have a panel, a watch dog group that oversees such matters. There job would be to investigate such matters and make such findings known to ALL OUR JUDO ORGANIZATIONS. That would be their only job, and after making such findings known then the governing
bodies of our great sport take appropriate, (legally & within the organizations) action. It should not take years, it should be swift and punishable to the max. Like you stated, "no tolerance."
Thank you for your time.
Yours for judo
Joe Mazzariello - Godan
PS,
You may print this and use my name as I do not care what these perverts think or feel.
