First, I would like to thank Orlando Judo Academy with Head Sensei Dale Thompson
for being great host on September 8, 2007. I would also like to thank Sensei
Del Diaz, Sensei Brian Germain, Sensei John Fiege & Sensei Hiram "Tonka" Cruz,
and Sensei Philippe Castel. They passed on great information to everyone at this
clinic. I would also like to thank everyone that showed up to take part in this
clinic. There were people from Georgia to Miami at this clinic. I estimate
about 100 people on the mat.

Second, it was announced at this clinic that the next North/Central
Workout/Clinic will be held at Central Florida Judo & Jujitsu with Head Sensei
Bill "Dancing Bear" Andreas in Clermont, FL. I believe that he stated it will
be held the first Saturday of October 6, 2007. Bill and/or I will send out more
information when it gets confirmed.

Yours In Judo,
David J. Ellis

Ladder Tournament Results

(Coral Springs, Fla.) – The follow-up event to the
Fall Classic, Sunday’s Ladder Tournament was a smaller
competition as many athletes fought up a weight
division, but featured some of the season’s best
match-ups.

Anna Palmer (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo
National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center)
won her 52kg division with relatively ease on
Saturday, but moving up to 57kg created a new
challenge in the form of six total matches in a
heavier weight class – including three against
five-time National Champion Carrie Chandler
(Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training
Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center).

Palmer and Chandler fought in the semifinals of the
52kg division at the Senior Nationals in April, but
when the match went into overtime Palmer was countered
by Chandler and thrown for a yuko (quarter-point)
score.

This time around Chandler was returning from shoulder
surgery in a warm-up tournament before she leaves next
week for the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro .

After a first-round bye Chandler dominated her next
fight against Lydia Au (Chicago , Ill. / Tohkon),
quickly taking the junior player to the ground and
working her into an armbar in the first minute to
advance to her final series of matches against Palmer.

Palmer, meanwhile, earned her early wins against
Chandler ’s JMJC teammates Kimberly Carpenter and
Ronni Aragona, both of Glenville , N.Y.

Palmer and Chandler split their first two matches with
each player winning by a yuko throw in the fourth
minute.

Chandler took the first win and Palmer’s win in the
second forced a third final. Neither athlete scored
in regulation, so the match went to Golden Score.
Again, both athletes fought strategically and at the
end of 10 minutes there was still no score which meant
the match went to a referee’s decision.

As the flags came out, Palmer’s supporters cheered
“Blue! Blue! Blue!” to voice their enthusiasm for
Palmer when the referees brought out flags to signal
the win with votes for either the player in the blue
gi (Palmer) or the white one (Chandler).

“It was good to hear everybody chanting ‘Blue!’
because it made me realize that I’d done really well
and that I’d won it,” Palmer said.

The judges voted unanimously for Palmer and she won
the gold medal.

“I couldn’t be happier. I keep working harder and it
keeps paying off, so it encourages me more for the
future,” Palmer said after the match. “It was a
really big win and I think this is a really good
progress for my career.”

The win took a total of six matches for Palmer after
her three matches at the Fall Classic on Saturday.

“Six matches today and three yesterday… it’s been a
long couple days, but the main thing I learned is how
to keep your composure when your body just wants to
fail,” Palmer said.

Aaron Kunihiro (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National
Team FORCE) had a standout performance on the men’s
side. The Senior National medalist in the 60kg
division, Kunihiro fought up to 66kg on Sunday.

Among his five wins, three of his victories were
against top-ranked 60kg players. Kunihiro defeated
2007 Pan Am Team member Nick Kossor (Glenville , N.Y.
/ USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris
Judo Center) by a penalty and a koka (smallest points)
score when he threw Kossor at the buzzer.

In his first final match, Kunihiro threw Miguel
Ballesteros (Miami , Fla. / USA Judo National Training
Site at North Miami) , 2006 U.S. Open fifth-place
finisher, and moved straight into a win, but
Ballesteros tapped out after five seconds with an
injury.

After Kunihiro defeated Ballesteros, he fought Kossor
again. This time neither athlete scored until
Kunihiro threw Kossor for koka and yuko scores in the
last minute and launched Kossor for a beautiful ippon
as the buzzer went off.

Also among the day’s competitors was Grace Jividen
(Littleton , Colo. / Olympic Training Center / Denver
Judo), a 43-year-old 1992 Olympian who was fighting
for the first time since she was named an alternate at
the 2004 Olympic Trials.

Jividen, who fought in the 63kg division in 2004,
competed at 70kg on Sunday, defeating Natalie Laursen
(Livermore, Calif. / Amador), a former top-ranked
junior player in the 63kg division, and Kelsi Bostic
(Anderson, Ind. / Judan Judo), a 70kg junior national
champion.

Fall Classic Nationals Results

(Coral Springs, Fla.) – The Fall Classic National
Championships on Saturday served as a preview of
things to come during the next year as new players
staked their claim in divisions and others repeated
their previous successes.

One of the day’s top stories was 46-year-old Rene Capo
(Naperville, Ill. / Cohen’s Judo), a two-time Olympian
(1988 and 1996), who upset both the #1-ranked player
in the division and the current National Champion to
win the 100kg title.

In a double elimination tournament that almost always
translates into longer days and more matches for
everyone, Capo had what may have been the longest,
needing a total of nine matches and eight wins to earn
gold.

“If I would’ve known it was going to be nine matches I
probably wouldn’t have came,” Capo joked after the
awards ceremony. “I haven’t really competed since last
year’s U.S. Open, so I’m just getting back into it
again, but I keep doing it because I still love
competing.”

After early wins against Joseph Aceto (San Jose,
Calif. / After-School All-Stars) and Damian O’Hara
(Little Egg Harbor Township, N.J. / Cranford Judo),
Capo was thrown for ippon (instant win) by 2007 Senior
National Champion Shintaro Higashi (Scarsdale, N.Y. /
NYAC / Kokushi Budo Institute of New York).

In the loser’s pool, Capo defeated Victor
Jean-Baptiste (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 2007 Senior Nationals
medalist Kyle Vashkulat (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo
National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo
Center) and World Team member Adler Volmar (Coral
Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at
North Miami) all to earn the right to move back up to
fight Higashi twice more.

In the first match, Higashi threw Capo on the corner
of the mat, but Capo countered for a score of his own
before throwing Higashi for ippon with just over a
minute left to win the match. Their third match went
to Golden Score (overtime) at the conclusion of the
regulation period before Capo threw Higashi.

The win keeps Capo securely as the third-ranked
athlete on the USA Judo Senior Elite National Roster
with just nine months remaining until the U.S. Olympic
Team Trials for Judo, June 13-14 in Las Vegas , Nev.

“Knowing I’m 46, a lot of people were going to be
after me right off just because of age. I’m sure they
were like ‘Ok, he’s 46.’ He can’t beat me. He’s like
my grandpa!’” Capo laughed. “I’m kind of taking it
day-by-day now. I’ve got a full-time job and custody
of two kids, so I’m playing it by ear. If I make a
third Olympic Team, that’s great, but now it’s just a
day-to-day thing.”

Although Nick Delpopolo (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA
Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo
Center) had a seemingly shorter day with “only” six
matches, all of them were pressure-packed and five
went into overtime, including three matches against
eventual silver medalist Michael Eldred (Fruitland,
Idaho / Western Idaho Judo Institute), a silver
medalist at the British Open earlier this year.

After early round wins over Alfred Raymond (Providence
, R.I. / Mayo Quanchi Judo); former Senior Nationals
medalist RJ Cohen (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Cohen’s Judo)
and 2006 U.S. Open Champion Bobby Lee (Coral Springs,
Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North
Miami), Delpopolo kicked off a three-match series
against Eldred.

With his matches against Cohen and Lee going into
Golden Score, Delpopolo seemingly should have been
tired, but rebounded well, defeating Eldred in their
first match. Eldred then dropped down to beat Lee
before fighting Delpopolo twice more. Delpopolo lost
the next match when he came in for an uchimata (inner
thigh throw) which Eldred escaped from and countered
with a throw of his own for a yuko (quarter-point)
score. Delpopolo came back, though, to throw Eldred
for ippon with an o goshi (hip throw) / uchimata
combination to win by ippon.

Josh O’Neil (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo
National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center)
was another of the day’s standouts. A former 66kg
Senior Nationals medalist, O’Neil spent the summer
moving down to 60kg prior to the German Open where he
defeated one of the top-five players at the 2005 World
Championships to place fifth in one of Europe’s most
difficult tournaments.

Although only the division’s fourth seed, O’Neil
defeated the 2006 National Champion, Rafael Ramos
(Union City, N.J. / Camal Judo), in his first match,
before losing a close match to 2007 Pan Am
Championships Team member Nick Kossor (Glenville, N.Y.
/ USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris
Judo Center) who scored off a late yuko and sat on his
lead to secure the match.

O’Neil dropped down to the loser’s pool to defeat #3
seed Miguel Ballesteros (Miami, Fla. / USA Judo
National Training Site at North Miami) to move back up
for two more fights against Kossor. In the first,
O’Neil won after Kossor committed two penalties and
O’Neil scored a yuko of his own.

In the final match, O’Neil was down to Kossor by two
penalties with just over a minute remaining when
someone yelled “C’mon Kossor! Just one more attack!”

And as it turned out, just one more attack was what
O’Neil needed to throw Kossor with a body lock o uchi
gari (leg throw) for ippon to win the division.

In O’Neil’s old 66kg division, the history of close
contests continued as frequent rivals 2006 Senior
National Champion Taylor Takata (Colorado Springs,
Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic
Training Center) and Kenny Hashimoto (San Jose, Calif.
/ USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State
University) faced off yet again in the finals.

In the fourth minute of their first match, Takata was
given a penalty that would win the match for
Hashimoto. In the loser’s pool, Takata faced Jeremy
Liggett (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National
Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center), a 2006
Pan Am silver medalist as a 60kg player.

Liggett had lost earlier in the day to Hashimoto and
moved to the loser’s pool where he nearly lost to
16-year-old Zachary Godbold (Houston, Texas /
Diamondback Judo) who threw Liggett with a seoi nage
(shoulder throw) for ippon 18 seconds into the match.
The ippon was waived down to a waza-ari (half-point)
which gave Liggett room to increase his attacks and
later throw Godbold for ippon in the fourth minute.

After another win by ippon over Seiji Hashimoto (San
Jose , Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San
Jose State University) , Liggett then fought Takata.

Both athletes received simultaneous stalling penalties
midway through the match, but Takata secured a
buzzer-beating throw for a koka (smallest points)
score to advance to another fight against Kenny
Hashimoto.

In their second fight, Hashimoto was up by a yuko and
a koka when Takata committed a shido that gave another
score to Hashimoto. After several more exchanges of
points during the final minute, Hashimoto scored a
yuko with 10 seconds remaining and won both the match
and the gold medal.

In the women’s divisions, 2007 Senior Nationals silver
medalist Nina Cutro-Kelly (San Antonio, Texas /
Universal Judo) overcame a loss to Katie Mocco
(Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training
Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) to win their
next two matches and the gold medal.

En route to defeating Mocco, a 2006 Pan Am medalist at
70kg, Cutro-Kelly also defeated 2005 National Champion
and World Team member Molly O’Rourke (El Cerrito,
Calif. / East Bay Judo Institute).

After splitting the series at one apiece, Cutro-Kelly
was down by a yuko when she threw Mocco as the buzzer
rang on the end of their third match.

In the women’s 63kg division, 17-year-old Kayla
Harrison (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo Team
FORCE) was one of the day’s most women’s players,
winning fight straight matches to earn the 63kg title
after placing second at the Nationals earlier this
year and winning the 70kg title in 2006.

David-

My wife Beryl died 8/13/07. She was co-founder with me in the training center
here, and had supported judo with her time and money for over 15 yrs.

Beryl was friends with judoka from all over the country. Her stepsons Matthew,
18, and Jacob 21, are actively training for national and international
competition. She made judo a featured part of her health education program in
Gadsden County and wrote grants for mats and uniforms for after school judo
programs in the public schools.

To all Florida Judo Members

First and most of all I would like to thank the following for there dedication
and hard work. I know Florida Judo could not have done it without you!

* Brian Germain, his family and Judo club (Chris, Katie and Kelly Germain worked
technical officials both day. Brian, his family, and his club help with the
mats)
* Tomadachi Judo Club (worked scorer table both days)
* Bobby Vigness (worked pool sheets both days)
* Panther Judo Club (Registration, worked scoring table both days and breakdown
of venue)
* Mike New (Registration, worked scoring table day 1 and refereed on day 2)
* Rachel New (Registration, worked scoring table both days)
* David Ellis (Registration, refereed both days)
* Falcon Judo (Registration, mat crew Saturday)
* Gabe Charmichael Judo Club (assisted on breakdown)
* Tracy Charmichael (worked scoring table)
* Eddie Arrazcaeta (set up venue, breakdown, worked tournament both days)
* Richard Leys (Registration, MC)
* Gwen Leys (awards, assisted with MC)
* Hector Estevez (refereed both days)

For those who stood around and didn't do anything during the tournament I wish
you well and happiness. For those who didn't help with the breakdown of the
venue as we requested for help per the PA from Richard I wish you well
also(exception those that can't due to medical condition they are excused).

Many tournaments have been organized and run by Florida Judo in partnership
with USA Judo. We have been spoiled, many of the National events have been held
here in Florida and not in some other state. For all of you that compete or even
just like to watch you have saved lots of money due to the events being held
here in Florida. We have held 2 US Open Sr, 1 US Sr National, 1 High School,
Middle and Collegiate National and 1 Fall Classic/Ladder tournament. I along
with selective few have worked all these events, we asked for help many times on
line, by phone, etc. I have seen top clubs and people in our state just watch
while one person or two are picking up mats or while they are doing something
else. I just wanted to bring to everyone attention the following, I am no
one's slave, I make NO money from these events(the money is made by USA Judo
and the profit when ever they decide to pay it is 50% which goes to FLORIDA JUDO
INC., after Florida Judo Inc. receive this money then Florida Judo Inc. splits
it with the clubs or people that worked it meaning 25% goes to Florida Judo Inc.
and the other 25% goes to the working members.

Certain clubs and members always cry out for help funding athletes, etc.
but yet they stand and watch or just don't do anything at all.

I'll tell you what, I have been in this sport for 41 years, I was a elite
junior, I was a elite Senior, I have been coaching for over 20 years and have
had many top athletes, I coached USA teams internationally, I chaired the USA
under 20 HEAD coaching position and yet you see me picking up mats, laying down
mats, working the scorer table, etc. and yes I am the President Of Florida Judo!
I don't stand and watch I do!

In the future for those who like to compete and travel, open up your bank
account and pockets because next year and the following the events will be in
another state and you will be paying for it. There is a saying YOU NEVER KNOW
WHAT YOU GOT UNTIL YOU LOSE IT isn't that true.

Again to all of those who saw Eddie Arrazcaeta today working by himself breaking
down the venue and decided to assist him I tip my hat to you to those who
walked away after Richard Leys requested for help and were physically able to,
I have no comment.

Again A big Thank You To Every One who Assisted we have concluded the events for
2007.

Gerry Navarro

Human Weapon: Judo: Samurai Legacy Airs on the History Channel on Friday August
17 at 10 p.m. EST

Hosts Jason Chambers and Bill Duff are in Japan to explore the techniques and
history of Japan's national art of hand-to-hand combat: Judo - the science of
the Samurai. Derived from the bloody battlefields of feudal Japan and jujutsu
fighting styles of the samurai, judo has an illustrious past of deadly skills
and honor. Along their journey, our hosts travel through the towering metropolis
of Tokyo and the Samurai capital of Kyoto. They'll train with an elite police
force and journey to the mountaintop hideaway of legendary master, the
descendent of a 400-year-old line of samurai. Under the intense training of the
masters, Jason and Bill quickly discover the spectacular throws, merciless pins
and strangling chokeholds that are an integral part of this powerful combat art.
Jason and Bill's journey eventually leads them to Tokai University, where one of
them will muster the strength and newly acquired judo skills required to take on
a world-class judo champion.

The show will air at 10 p.m. EDT. Check local listings for the time in your
area.
